Thats a really good point Guybrush. Even though I hate apple products they do have a tenancy to raise the bar amongst their competition. Simply because they seem to be able to recognize/create consumer trends before everyone else.
Its too bad most of the apple fanatics are pretentious idiots, it makes me embarrassed to walk around with an iPod. I still can't find anyone who will give me a good argument as to why its a good idea to pay twice as much for something that does fundamentally the same thing in a slower manner, aside from the fact that some people want to use specific software.

W. Mossberg: Is the tablet going to replace the laptop? Tell me what you think about where it's going?
S. Jobs: You know... (long pause). I'm trying to think of a good analogy. When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks. But as people moved more towards urban centers, people started to get into cars. I think PCs are going to be like trucks. Less people will need them. And this is going to make some people uneasy.

yes and the 2 minutes were enough to convince me that it makes sense.
i'm not exactly sure if i'd need an iPad for anything else besides fun/leisure though. Learning to code for it, sure would be an incentive..
Would i do all the web-browsing and emailing and pdf-reading on it, and use the laptop only for work? Would i still want to do any work then at all? it's weird.
if i had the cash i'd probably impulse-buy one instantly lol.

I'm lucky at the moment and have some spare cash so I got one for me and one for my kids. They will be four years old in a week and they can choose Spiderman, Alphabet games, colour stuff and watch Shrek or sing long with songs we've made up all by themselves. There are loads of OSC things to play with for me that are great! I'll post some links tomorrow.

yeah you have a point there, this is a downer. Apple is indeed kinda slow with this whole cloud business, and iTunes surely sucks massive cock.
See this: LAZY_TITLE
What are the reasons you actually need to hook it up with iTunes, other than syncing music?

Not talking about itunes per se, but the standard method for recharging an iPod is to plug it into a usb port on the computer. I haven't unboxed and iPad, but I am sure the default connector is the same.

true. someone already developed an app where you can sync without directly connecting your iphone/pod/pad to a computer. apple didn't approve it though, so you can only install it on a jail-broke ithing

Not a mac user but I think it could be the start of something huge. Maybe not this version and maybe not even apple as manufacturer, but the whole concept is great for creative stuff. When these things get more common and good, intuitive software to go with it, it could revolutionize electronic music making. I've always wanted a really physical and graphical interface to make music with and this is the closest thing to that i've seen so far.

TouchOSC you choose how many faders, rotarys, switches, X/Y things you want and can easily flick between pages of layouts
iDrum You can load your own sounds in this MPC type sequencer and transfer it all back into your computer easily
Jasuto A clone of the ReacTable but better
iSequence a sequence that keeps it simple
8Bitone Chiptune type sequencer
beatmaker Another take on the MPC way of sequencing
iElectribe an Electribe for £5.99

In the future, you might have something even better than an iPad that will fold up and fit in your pocket. You can do whatever you want on it, and you won't be able to live without it. It will be very addictive and destroy countless lives. I'd never lead my kids down that path..

I'm going to get one at some point. I am constantly reading .pdf files for my work and get sick of them cluttering my screen when I write my reports.
I wouldn't call myself a fan boy at all. I just find Mac OS easier to work with than Windows, perhaps due to an extra/missing chromosome or summat.
However, it will be difficult to see the screen on it due the all the smears I'll make with my grotty little cock.

It 'almost' does everything I want a home computer to do... lack of flash is a bit of a bother for internet browsing though.

I finally got to try one out in the store yesterday. Spent about 20 minutes with it. All I have to say is "meh". Kind of indifferent. Its like a big iPod touch. I can see why people might want it as an e-reader, but its certainly not the groundbreaking device everyone is hyping up.

New iphone looks nice with the nice screen and the nice 720p video recording and being portable and whatnot.
Can't justify this ipad thing though. its funny money to me, no matter how nice an e-reader it is (which the new iphone will do just as well if the super nice screen hype is to be believed).

Randomness is a concept of non-order or non-coherence in a sequence of symbols or steps, such that there is no intelligible pattern or combination. Randomness has somewhat disparate meanings as used in several different fields. It also has common meanings which may have loose connections with some of those more definite meanings.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines "random" thus: Having no definite aim or purpose; not sent or guided in a particular direction; made, done, occurring, etc., without method or conscious choice; haphazard.
Also, in statistics, as: Governed by or involving equal chances for each of the actual or hypothetical members of a population; (also) produced or obtained by such a process, and therefore unpredictable in detail.
Closely connected, therefore, with the concepts of chance, probability, and information entropy, randomness implies a lack of predictability. More formally, in statistics, a random process is a repeating process whose outcomes follow no describable deterministic pattern, but follow a probability distribution, such that the relative probability of the occurrence of each outcome can be approximated or calculated. For example, the rolling of a fair six-sided die in neutral conditions may be said to produce random results, because one cannot compute, before a roll, what number will show up. However, the probability of rolling any one of the six rollable numbers can be calculated, assuming that each is equally likely.

so i walked past the apple store today, and saw they had many ipads on display, so i thought i would nip in and try one. I'm not a fan of apple, but have secretly been coveting this device, i certainly don't' need one, but it does look rather nice.
I have to say, i was rather underwhelmed by the experience. the games were lousy, the virtual keyboard useless and the speaker was feeble. I'm guessing the average casual apple user can't manage much more than pigeon-pecking a normal keyboard though, so this probably isn't a real concern for apple.
So what is this for? would i want to watch a film on it? probably not, as it requires too much forethought. Would i use it to listen to music on? probably not, as the storage is tiny. Would i use it to look at pictures? most likely, this element really works well, and just feels well suited to the device.
The multi touch is rather lovely, but hardly worthy of the price tag alone. It does feel very intuitive for looking at maps, and websites look nice, but i didn't bother trying any that didn't support flash. So that all this brings to the table. a big touch screen. There is no real technological innovation here, but perhaps there doesn't need to be. Perhaps the real innovation is selling mutton dressed as lamb. Apple are on to a winner here, and people who think its a bit crap (e.g. me) most likely aren't apple's demographic anyway.
Still, its early days, and early adopters always get a bum-deal retrospectively. I guess this really is trying to tap into the casual market
Overall score: 40%

Is it fun reading books on the iPad? That's really the only question for me, because I can readily see it's good for movies and photos and web and email.
But reading for longer periods of time on normal screens is just horrible. I prefer paper.
