I saw this last night for the first time, it is the best
flick I have seen since Memento. It comes out on DVD/Video
in the U.S. on Tuesday, I suggest you check it out if you
haven't already.

Ah since you are a Lynch fan I can guarantee you'll like
this. Even casual fans will, I think this is the best thing
he's ever done.

Yes, including Blue Velvet.

Eraserhead is the best thing he's ever done : )

though i agree Mulholand Drive is outstanding, best film in
years.

This film is brilliant.

I think it would cause a person to go insane attempting to
understand what is going on.

I found the "wanking" scene quite arousing, they are two
tasty ladies.

Blue Velvet is funny as, Dennis Hopper is class.

Can someone suggest a list of lynch films to watch.

Teeth

I don't remember the 'wanking scene'. I thought they had sex
with each other.

What do people think of his straighter films like the
Elephant Man and the Straight Story?

all of them : )

Eraserhead is his weirdest and most arty (and my fave)

Lost Highway was similar in style to Mulholland Drive and
Trent Reznor produced the soundtrack.

Mulholland Drive wasnt that difficult to understand once you
sort out what was a dream and what wasn't, i think the order
is mixed up too which is probably why it confuses people so
much. I had to see it 2 times before i figured it out, well
most of it anyway : )

human.

I apologize, I said it's the best thing he's ever done, not
having seen everything he's done. I haven't even seen
Eraserhead yet, I hope to next week.

Either way Mulholland Dr. is great, at least we all can
agree on that. I love the part where Rebekah Del Rio sings
Llorando (Crying).

It's cool steve, I haven't seen everything he's done either,
but nothing I've seen can be compared to Eraserhead. Most of
his later stuff is him trying hard to be weird, whereas,
E-head is beautifully non-selfconscious. And it has a
shitload of pop-culture references which makes it even more
scarier

Who wanked? Why was it disturbing? I can't remember.

The masturbating scene was very brief. And it's not like you
saw finger penetration or anything, just a girl with her
hand down her pants basically, moving up and down very fast.
I think the disturbing part was the look on her face. It
wasn't one you'd imagine of a girl who is pleasuring
herself.

What is your favorite scene in a David Lynch movie?

Mine's either the scene in the nightclub/bar in Twin Peaks:
FWWM or the first scene with Frank and Dorothy in Blue
Velvet...

I love when Mr. Eddie beats the fuck out of that driver who
flips him off, all the while lecturing him. I don't know how
many times i've wanted to do that to drivers who piss me
off. What's funny is you see his drivers in the back put
their seatbelts on when that guy flips him off.

I also love when Kyle does the chicken walk in Blue Velvet,
it's so random, you never expect it.

Edit: I mean you see his goons in the back, not drivers.

In wild at heart, theres a guy who sits in a bar, who looks
weird. the couple sits. he looks at them and say, in a
totally fucked up pitched up voice:

"pigeons spread diseases.
you´ve seen that!"

thats so fucked up.

lost highway man here. enjoyed it a great deal. "Fuck you,
you fucking fuck". that line makes blue velvet worth
watching alone!

straight story. not really like david lynch, but i really
liked it anyway. elephant man. yes, you´re hardcore if
you´re not touched by that film. wery wery nice.

as a sidenote, my hairstyle is spookily close to davids! i
love it.

I rented Mulholland Drive last night. The first 2 hours were
pretty straightforward, then DL pulls a mindfuck for the
last 20 minutes or so. Classic. I'm going to try and figure
out what happened and get back to everyone in a few months.

It's a good movie - not his best! The acting was very good,
though.

outside with Willem Defoe and that guy says something like:

"You haven't seen my dog and yet you picture my dog in your
mind" or something. Anyway its class.

The dark-haired girl is just gorgeous. I think the end of
the film was a bit lame though. No point of collecting the
threads when the rest is so fucked up. But I liked the rest.
Only five people who left during the film. Maybe their only
Lynch-experience before this was The Straight Story? :)

I love David Lynch, but I haven't seend Mulholland Dr yet.
Also, I think Memento sucked.
If he lost his ability to create new memories, he wouldn't
have remembered that he lost that ability at all.

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-04-12 13:36 [#00169700]

Memento wasn't Lynch.

Of course he would. You can realise when you can't recall
what you were doing 12 hours or so ago.

I know Memento wasn't Lynch, someone else mentioned it at
the top of this thread though.
Not if you can't create new memories! I was so bothered by
that script that I actually researched it--it's called
anterograde amnesia.

Pantalamoin: Could you perhaps explain it to me? I've seen
it twice and am still a bit confused. (But that goes for
most of his puzzle movies, at least for me)

I saw Mulholland Drive twice and after much discussion with
my girlfried, we've decided that the first portion of the
movie is a dream sequence occuring in the mind of Diane. We
think Diane fell in love with Camilla (dark haired woman)
and failed in her pursuit as an actress and was manipulated
and humiliated by Camilla which drove her insane. As a
result she hires a hitman to kill Camilla and then goes
insane and kills herself. We've been picking apart the
'dream sequence' which embodies the first 3/4 of the movie.
All of the characters in the dream are from Dianes real life
and are projected by Diane in interesting ways. For example,
in the dream Diane sees Camilla (Rita) as dependent on Diane
(Betty), while in life Diane is dependent on Camilla. Diane
portrays herself in the dream as the sweet and naive 'Betty'
with amazing acting ability, which contrasts with her
failing acting career in which she only got roles as favors
from Camilla. Almost all of the characters in the dream seem
to have obvious concepts or references behind them. The box
is strange, we guess it might be a symbol of Camilla's death
(a manifestation of the blue key from real life). We think
the underlying theme of the movie involves depicting the
struggle and horror that a young aspiring actress may have
to cope with, and the psychological implications.

Does anyone have a thought on the homeless man/monster and
that whole scene in the beginning?

Interesting. I can't remember most of it and will have to
watch it again. To be honest though, I don't care if I don't
work his films out. What I get out of them is the unnerving
atmosphere and the anxiety they cause. I'm not sure the
plots are the point. I heard Barry Norman say that he
reckoned even Lynch doesn't know. He said he asked Lynch
what it meant and he replied: "Come on Barry. Think about
it. You know what it means". Or something like that.

offline shibumi from United States on 2002-04-12 15:19 [#00169849]
Points: 359 Status: Lurker

I also read that Lynch suggested that most of his films are
like dreams, insofar as the objects and people in them are
representative of ideas, not always what they are.

I think he has a concrete conception and builds up the film
using symbolism and allusion. I think its great that there
is a movie like this that puts forth a challenge instead of
spoon feeding the brain.

I wonder how others here interpreted the film. Does anyone
catch a wildly different idea from ours? I am interested to
see if there are other interesting explanations for how it
was arranged.
