idm barely existed until around year 1999 when all the
world's electronic music fans came online and visited idm
list and joyrex.com and xltronic forums :-) then americans
brought the idm concepts and ideas, which in fact was
nothing to do with career of aphex twin, is just the
american interpretation and some other countrys like
australia went along with the fake ideas

proem, cex, kid 606, flashbulb, proxy, od, deleterboy
anything of minidiscs and merck records = idm
autechre fans use fruityloops vst make autechre copy
it was bad times
u look for music "influence by aphex twin" it is nothing
ever like aphex twin at all, it is the horrible of "IDM",
the fake american interpretation

it was a bad time man 2000, 2004
in terms of our culture squarepusher but mainly ceephax kept
things goin until reinforcements arrived
then there was TONNES of arguments
LOADS
FUCK IDM
FUCK VST
it all kicked off bad man
blind idm americans couldnt understand the words and only
the true genius leader could show them the true path
u dont understand those dark times it is not documented

then the glorious pheonix awoke in the analord series leads
the way to the glorious directions of the future

aphex twin the true genius of electronic music

rave

Be serious for a second and reaize what kinda word you're
living in.

America is full of peope like Lady Gagafuck and Britney
Spears who are reminiscient of The Artist Formerly Known As
Prince's jizzdrops.

America is a wasteland of talent. No real talent has the
lifespan nowadays to make it into big business, unless all
the band members look like supermodels or are family
relatives to other superfmous hacks.

Underground is where it's at. Let the American 'economic'
system totally collapse before any real attempts at
producing meaningful talent arises.

In short, i woudn't give American interpretations of
european electronic music a second thought. Nobody really
cares what shit come out of their mouth over here. IDM, that
sounds hard.

It's true cx - In fact they are going to get together to
make a nude calendar in which you can chronicle how long it
takes you to appreciate a record. 'It's December and I
finally think I understand Quaristice. And what's this, Luke
Vibert straddling a EMS100? Christmas has come twice this
year.'

Since when did America have a massive cultural attempt at
IDM? Did I miss something? Because my remembrance is that
all of us Americans simply listened to the European
stuff...

I can't think of a single noteworthy American IDM artist,
and I live there.

You can't really make livable income selling a small handful
of cds 10$ each. You have to go viral like chocolate rain
for it to be worth it. So you need lots of memes, but the
most popular memes are the most stupid, because most people
are stupid.
Burning cds and shipping them and stuff is work, so would
need some company to handle that which would take a cut. And
the whole 'cd jewelcase' type package is pointless in once
sense since mp3s are downloadable. But people recognize that
'in the past people bought cds' so are fooled into thinking
there's still worth in them. These are usually the stupid
people, so the best thing to sell them is some super meme
stuff like 'the top 10 michael jackson songs second
edition, revised part 2, limited edition, gold dumbass
version'.

No, the only jobs available today are fast food or some
giant banhammer wielding internet behemoth like google. Soon
the latter will go extinct, and everybody but the rich will
work in fast food. Then overpopulation will cause food
shortage so the fast food workers will be forced to feed
their unused body parts to the rich people like tom cruise.
Like you can flip patties perfectly with just one eye and
one leg, etc.

do you mean noteworthy as in musical originality, influence
over other artists, amount of distribution, word of mouth
what?
do you think lfo was ever noteworthy? i like his music but i
think he always fell in the shadow of the 5 or so
"noteworthy" "idm" musicians, ae, boc, plaid and aphex.
there were ever only a few notable musicians in this 'genre'
so i dont think thats fair.

flashbulb has had plenty of recognition, musical merits may
be debatable though.

lfo has made decent music and also lots of cool collabs
(bjork etc). also he is pretty funny on this board, so
respect to him for being talented and chilled out.

yeah i didnt mean to insult him.
my point was that even though he did all that, he wasnt the
first artist people would mention when they would recommend
idm, ya know?
i can count on two hands the "noteable" artists but that
says nothing about the ability of all the others, which was
kind of my point too.
notability is junk

and also i want to reiterate that im only using the word idm
here in a referential manner. im not saying any of these
artists are 'idm'
i just hate how clouded the term has become. its the only
genre name i know of that connects all these artists,
because for awhile, many people DID call them the IDM
artists. not my words.

when you consider how loose a definition idm is anymore,
going from untilted to campfire headphase, the only real
criteria seems to be that it is a bit cerebral and
electronic. so that opens up the door for a lot of american
artists to be fairly considered.

drexciya, arpanet, dopplereffekt
download, plateau, kone
richie hawtin
not breathing
matmos
bogdan raczynski
richard devine
otto von schirach if nothing else still for 8000 bc
prefuse 73
flying lotus
and more..

offline cx from Norway on 2009-10-21 03:12 [#02337995]

personally if i am to categorize music, i tend to use other
words than idm.
for autechre i could use words like abstract, ambient,
glitch, dark, futuristic etc.
for boc i could use nostalgic, retro electronics, sunshine,
guitars, vocal samples

if i am to explain how someone sounds to a new guy i never
use the word idm, id rather use other words like the above.
works much better. and is more fair to the artist cuz
everyone seems to hate idm now.

if you don't like the term idm you don't have a sense of
irony and so shouldn't listen to aphex twin in the first
place

to me it was always just 'electronic music', I never used
the other names that came about. i used to say electro for
short until someone corrected me that this is another genre
inside electronic music.

But i am aware that there are many sub genres to electronic
music, so much that they need labeling.

The thing is where does the 'dance' in IDM come from?
because most of this music is listened to at home!

btw there have been lots of artists who post on here. the
last one was 'orche' and i read in an autechre interview
once that they admit they read about what people say about
new releases because they are curious etc.

So when autechre or aphex, boc etc release something, you
can be assured they are here, but most likely they are just
guests and not actually registered
