Like Ophecks said, it has always been a busy board. Even
busier with the introduction of V5, due to the fact it's way
more easier to reply and that is how it should be. 'Ease of
use' and 'minimalistic' are us.

The point system is basically the same thing as a message
counter, which almost all other messageboards have.

If people are posting just to get points then I should kick
their asses.

Just a thought, but if you put up a chat room, then I
imagine some of these lame/repeated topics won't come up.

As someone said earlier, people seem to use this place as a
chat room. And having chatted with some of the good folks
here at iSketch (bar one (I won't get into that here!)) it
sounds like a good idea.

Of course I have no idea on what this intails, so maybe it's
not an option at the moment.

i don't think a lot of the off topic comments aren't as
"useless" as thei don't think a lot of the off topic
comments aren't as "useless" as the older members make them
out to be. I mean, this is an online community. a lot of
the people here seem to interact with each other like
friends do in real life. How well do you think you could
get to know someone if you were forced to only talk about
one thing all the time? don’t you think an online
message board/community is more valuable to it’s
members if there are some sort of relationships that are
formed on them? How did you guys with 1000+ points get to
know one another? Surely it wasn’t from 1000 ae and
aphex threads alone.

I think if this place were to crack down hard on the off
topic threads it’d dry up quickly as it got more and
more boring. People wouldn’t be able to form
friendships as easily, and would leave. The place
wouldn’t be nearly as dynamic.
older members make them out to be. I mean, this is an
online community.

yes flood control is built-in. It is only a few seconds,
against DoS attacks, but not meant to control the members
chatty behaviour.
I am not sure if that's a good tool anyway. I don't like to
regulate people.

One solution would be to create a real IRC-like chat tool,
for members. (Phob came up with the idea several times,
don't know what form to use for that anyway)

Other is to organize topics into more discussion groups, but
that's against the "keep it simple" philosophy.

One thing that will be introduced when the new design is
coming is showing the last poster. So people will click less
on topics, reloading only the index, which may lift some
weight from the server.

I see 2 problems with getting people to search for topics
similar to ones they're contemplating starting.

Firstly, people are too fucking lazy. Never underestimate
the laziness of the average mouse-potato. Still, there's no
excuse for starting a topic that's already there on the
front page. Take a baseball bat to those people.

Secondly, it's the top of a slippery slope leading towards
the suicidegirls.com board where people get flamed to
oblivion if they try starting a topic on a subject thats
been mentioned before, even if it was 50,000 years ago or
something.

i'm kinda a newbie here i guess (or at least i was when i
joined...) and i did get a little stick for posting a draft
7.30 topic, along the lines if 'yeah yeah we know its good
heard it all before' or some shit like that, but this board
moves so fast, topics drop off the bottom of the page like
flies, i just cant keep up, and yes im probably to lazy to
use the search and bring an old topic back to the top
(sorry). I must admit there are some pointless topics too,
(eg - im eating fried rice, what are you eating) but i think
the mix of music reletad topics and complete obscureness is
very much a part of the appeal of this board.

as for replies that are only a few words long, i can be
guilty of that quite a bit. i like to chip in with my two
penneth but dont like repeating whats already been written
like some kind of parrot. i'd prefer to add a couple of
sentences than repeat a couple of paragraphs.

I think some people may fear that their topic or comment
will be ignored because others will see it and go "I've
already read that one, I'm bored with it"
and just move on.
