how do you organize your music?

a question, do you have an efficient way to organize and
access your files or you just leave into one big folder
called 'music'? i'm thinking to put everything into an
external hd and divide it into several folders sorted per
genre but i can't think more than 4-5 genres, perhaps making
some alias on the desktop.. i need some discipline pls

music folder -> separate artist folders -> separate album
folders -> make playlists to avoid navigating all the
folders repeatedly.

I get what you're saying about genre, but I don't commit
anything to my hard drive without first knowing what genre
it is, so simply having all artists together works fine for
me.

I put all the music made by niggers on the left and
all the music not made by niggers on the right.
Whether or not music is made by a nigger is the only useful
distinction to me.

external hd + iTunes + ipod classic 120 gb

That's the organized part of it. Then I have several folders
on my computer for downloading from various sources. Pretty
messy...but it works. kinda

I have a music folder, then artists folders, then albums

all accessed with itunes, in which the artists are found in
alphabetical order, if i want to find something really fast,
i type the name of the artist song into the search and it
finds it without me hitting enter .

sometimes i have a load of tracks which are not labeled,
like i have shit loads of bogdan which is messy, but i can't
be bothered to clean it up

to it.

Digitally, I just do it alphabetically. Folders for A-B
artists, C-F artists, etc. Artist folders within, album
folder within the artist folders

A-B \ A-Ha \ 1985 - Hunting High and Low

And I never make playlists, I tend to just browse to folder
and enqueue them.

with the year at the beginning of the folder name..
interesting, but too long to do? about the playlist, i would
find the way to fuck everything up for sure. i'm gonna try
the combination /music/A/Aphex Twin though, sounds like a
new world

depends on usage. traktor library is a mix of genre-folders
and bigger collections (useful whe nesting together various
genres within the same artist).

other files are sorted into formats first (flac / mp3) Flacs
are similar to the traktor collections but i've opted to
keep my own rips in one big fuckoff folder, and then keep
the cheeky files in artists or bigger folders. mp3s are kept
in either genre folders or the hugely depressing downloads
that i should sort, but never get the chance to.

onto the more esoteric filing system that is my physical
record collection, which is a system of hierarchial label
discography (sorted by first cat# for each artist) and
related items with emphasis on size, format and
selfbiographical relevance. in practice this means that warp
get the first few metres, then rephlex and skam, with
artistcollections following and then the single albums and
12inches. cds are sorted similarly

and yes, its anal as fuck. but i spend less than 30 seconds
finding the record i'm after so its all good

cds: only by rough genres
records: elctronic / non-electronic / subdivided by artist
digital... omg
the "keepers" folder by [-- genre --] / artist
lots of genres in there... and fave artists get own folders
so i have maybe miami bass folder, when i want that.
would be ridiculous browsing for artists in that case.

"download" folder sorted roughly by genre also,
so i can check out new stuff in any genre im in a mood
for instantly.

oh and i have a "guilty pleasures" folder aswell,
for stuff id never show and only listen to in private,
in a sealed basement, ..at night, via headphones..

Yeah, I was suprised Wang was last, no Yazoo, no X-T-C, no
... bands after Wang Chung .. maybe music ends with Wang
Chung. At least for me. Well actually looking in my unsorted
"Downloads" there is Wire who would.. come .. last, ... I
suppose.

But no, no Yazoo. I feel .. ashamed.

i just dump them all in one folder, sorted by
artist-releasename

when my hdd is full, i make a new folder and then copy the
old ones onto the new (bigger) hdd drive. i've been doing
this for 10 years and i'm now onto mp3_5!

about 50,000 releases or so. it's very messy, but it works
for me.
