Americans are all about rock n roll. I walk around the city here and some hipster in tight pants, messy hair, and tattoos sez "I like some me some Indie Rock". What the fuck does that mean? It's all targeted now and all these labels know their targeted audience who will pay them money and release music which are almost cliche rip offs from the 70's and 80's for a whole new generation of folks who they can milk from. Maybe good for business, but it really mutes out a lot of other quality material out there... Making money from music is great, but I have less of a problem if the product is of actual high quality.
Too bad that Detroit Techno, Chicago Acid House, Minneapolis Funk, etc. and other midwest cultural products got discarded like refuse only to have folks in Europe pick them up on their shores where they mutated into totally new forms and interpretations.
It's too bad WARP has to cater to that very same audience that they were trying to define themselves against 15 years ago.
Now it's even more horrible that Americans are historically blinded to their past and make watered down music after it was one-upped a notch in Europe. The Internet has eliminated notions of geography, economics, and physical product from music makers and their audience. Now you can tune into whatever cultural products and ideas you wish to tap into. Let's learn from the rich past and have some new ideas shall we?

I dunno about this. Most labels (no matter how good they are) release a bunch of shit stuff. Warp definitely release loads of shit stuff but then I've never liked their whole roster either. I think Squarepusher is overrated and I never cared for Aphex either. Both have loads of talent but what they do with that talent really bores me.
I don't see their signing of "guitar shite" as a bad thing necessarily. I think the problem lies in the fact that most of the guitar groups they signed suck ass. Grizzly Bear are actually inventive and interesting but pretty much all the rest of it bores me to tears. I think sticking to electronic music only isn't necessary, I think they should simply use more discretion in what they sign.

maybe..but as a platform for talent they do a great job giving musicians a change. When it turns out to be not what they had expected than they quit releasing albums from that particular artist. If it does they are greedy and make a lot of money. It's just a strategy that seems to be working fine.

I listened to Pivot's whole album. Didn't do it for me. I liked one song near the three quarter mark though.
