Wpiss has had so much hype behind him that when I finally heard the full release, I was bored to tears. After multiple listens I concluded that Rephlex has lost it's shit, and is now on the prowl, like Warp, hiring drooling cookie-cutter idiots from message boards.
I'll be signed next, probably, so I dread that day.
Anyway, it'd be nice to see start up labels beat the shit out of these established pieces of dreck churning out mediocre, by-the-numbers for club goers retarded by excessive E usage.
Just look at at River Mohawke or Flying Petunia.
Ah well, I'll stick with the underground scene then while the ass kissers stand up for over hyped shiite that won't last in terms of quality and bash away at this thread.

hey since you're so opinionated on everything and sure of yourself, what might you reccomend to listen to? Because this is the only messageboard i frequent and i am starting to get tired of the music that's been in circulation here. I make music, and for me, getting signed on rephlex would not make my music any better than if it was not released on a popular label at all.
I agree that there is alot of hype going around, but to generalize things so much, (hiring drooling cookie-cutter idiots from message boards) i think you come off as snobbish, implying no one else knows to think for themselves.
Although i've never heard of River Mohawke or Flying Petunia, so hopefully that's a good thing.

ph, wisp's album isn't even listed on rephlex website! it is the messageboards fanboys making the hype themselves not rephlex. true, wisp did seem to go on watmm to reply to people but you ought not to resent that.
hiring people? are you serious! wisp = flying mohawke rephlex = warp c'mon now! i think you're passing up an album that's right up there with aphex and squarepusher?

i liked a few tracks off shimmering hour. especially some of the first ones..
i think wisp has his own kind of sound, the covers and titles he have fit perfectly.
theres more to be had here than just shallow listening.. i hear an 'old' sound made with new, and by old i mean like from 1500's or something.
maybe he is overhyped, but what do you think would happen when rephlex did this.. it doesnt negate the music.
its not a clone of afx or anything either, he has a different sound

I will say that I am glad to see people who have worked for years to get signed... that I will give them. The quality of the work from most new artists is pathetic to me (in comparison to many who are still working). And I don't look to Aphex and Autechre as the "golden age" (piss not included).
As for myself, the most musical support after all these years that I get is from a handful of better musicians than myself, and independent labels. Message boards have brought out some good, but tried to kill off many promising talents.
Hudson Mohawke has talent, Wisp has talent, Flying Lotus has talent; yet they all lack an originality that makes people follow everything despite what people say....
like Drexciya near when they started. Shunned and criticized, now it's epic work when one member is dead.

oh and Wisp was over hyped within message boards and blogs in a blatant effort to gain recognition like Syntheme. (And they're from Rephlex too? Gosh! Say it ain't so!)
All the naysayers saying there was no hype are blind to marketing.

I think there's no finer form of bitterness than what a failed electronic musician oozes. They're angry about not becoming famous to an audience of several dozen people on two or three messageboards and selling maybe five copies of a pressing. To see a man fail miserably at such a modest goal and have his heart broken over it - ah, it's caviar.

What is wrong with by-the-numbers music first of all?
Almost all of Drexciya's music besides their ambient/ droney stuff is all by-the-numbers.
That's how music...stays in time. You aren't badass if you make music with 4 different polyrhythms or something unless you make it sound pleasant to the ear. And different time signatures, it's all by the numbers.
If you want to hear bad by the numbers music, go listen to to some britney spears, or christina aguilera.
The way music is composed shouldn't be the determining factor of you liking it or not, unless you're a music snob and like being that way.
Hey PHuckwad, no one cares if you'll be back some day we all live our own lives and if you died tomorrow we would be sad only because you seem to get angry on a messageboard for no good reason instead of letting us know about the good shit in your life or stuff that you're actually interested in. Which i am curious to know because it sounds like you have dug through trash and found some pearls but i guess i will never know seeing as how you'll come back another day sometime.
Seriously man, that is some childish goodbye shit and you should be more focused on getting what you want out of life instead of feeling like you're eventually gonna come back to whatever it is you once had here.

To be fair to the wisp it is a full helping weighing in at 1:12:30.
It is not as bang as I thought it would contain spazmodic beats. It does sound good the mastering is lush. Tails off towards the end. Some tracks have sort of long intros before they drop. 7/10 imo.

I regurgitated this thread to admit that I was pretty damn harsh;
although not without standing... I'd say.
Wisp has blown up, Flying Lotus is huge and >shudder< Hudson Mohawke is very well known. Good for them. It's a tough industry.
I post subjects like this to communicate with those of the same interest and provoke "interesting" conversations... until I realize how sick and demented you all are and then I back off in disgust. hah.

wisp is pure idm
1. american 2. fruityloops 3. heavily influenced by aphex twin 4. watmm
hes pretty much the definition of purest idm in its purest form
aphex twin is never idm that was a lie/misconception by the americans
wisp is very talented, musically talented and thats why people love his music so much
it cant be denied that he is talented the thing is whether you like idm or not im not really a fan of idm the americans were so good with detroit techno and stuff but when the mistakenly made idm is where they tripped up imo
but if you like idm, then wisp is the best idm for you top of the range idm good luck to the chap he comes across as a nice bloke in his posts :-)
