I've been feeling hopeless lately. I chalk it up to too much drugging, too little exercise and an ever-growing gap between what I know I should eat and what I purchase at the grocery store. In this thread we can put the philosophical, religious, musical, and political debates aside for a while, and put our energy into getting healthier/staying healthy. Let's discuss whatever you'd like: work-out tips, recipes for low-fat meals, etc. It doesn't have to be anything too personal, but feel free to share personal success stories, or what works for you in terms of sticking to an exercise routine, etc.
I'm going to try to smoke less and jog more. I jog sporadically a couple times per month, but that's not enough to stay healthy, living the lifestyle I do. I'm going to abstain from those cheesey sourdough bread crisps I like so much, and buy more fruits and vegetables. It's time to start feeling better, one day at a time.

I've been taking those omega 3 flax oil capsules and I feel less wrecked when I do strenuous exercise.
You gotta stop smoking cigarettes if that's what you mean by smoking. That shit is so stupid, as futile and damaging as scratching your eyeball with a utility knife, except it makes you smell worse.

Have more sex, best exercise ever, and find a fruit that you love so much you can eat it every day all day long. I could eat fucking 6 good juicy oranges a day for example, but other fruits help just as much, like grapes. That's all you need to do, fuck and eat fruits. Don't fuck fruits, that doesn't work the same way.

We say, “I will,” and “I will not,” and imagine ourselves (though we obey the orders of some prosaic person every day) our own masters, when the truth is that our masters are sleeping. One wakes within us and we are ridden like beasts, though the rider is but some hitherto unguessed part of ourselves.

Plan your meals before you go shopping and take a shopping list with you, i normally take a pencil too so i know i have got the item.
if you work out how much crap you eat each month, and imagine it stacked up on your dinner table. then imagine how much of that will turn into fat and end up on your belly!
then imagine it over a year, a mountain of crap!!! sugar, fat and carbs all stuffed into your belly!!

I bought a food mixer the other day, only cheap - £20. Go down the nearest market and buy some cheap bananas, strawberrys, blueberrys and raspberrys. Then every day shove a selection of them in the blender with some natural yoghurt, a little semi-skimmed milk, a few teaspoons of honey and several ice cubes.
The result is a pint glass of lovely smoothie, at a cost of less than a quid per day. Very healthy, very satisfying, great for your skin, your stomach and your bowels.
If you're going to smoke at the same time don't bother. If you smoke then anything else you is irrelevant because you have reduced your life to a game of roulette where dying young and looking like a pale, wrinkled, washed up old prune is almost inevitable.

drink more water, less sugar-based drinks. Eat at a slow and steady pace, drinking a bit between every few bites. This will allow your body to realize when it is full, it's very important not to over eat. Don't finish your food simply because "it will taste good".
I need to increase my mental health. Less video games/TV, more books. I picked up The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks earlier this week, I've only just dug into the first couple chapters but I can remember now why I used to read so much.
Find a topic you're crazy for and good read about it!

go on a water fast. eat nothing and drink only distilled water for a few weeks or so. it'll clean out your system of toxins and other nasty shit. give your body a chance to rest and recuperate. help you overcome addictions. clear your mind. remove excess weight. cure certain illnesses and ailments. help with depression. etc.
it's only hard the first few days. after that you dont even get physical hunger cravings anymore until your fast is over.
it'll give you a clean slate to pursue a healthy lifestyle of proper eating and exercise once youre finished.

DOOOONNNNNTTTTTTTTTTT!!! no no no! Please don't start telling people to do that, it's SO dangerous... for example...
Your body is designed to be able to detox itself. Surviving off water only is just not an option. Especially for a few weeks!! As soon as you start starving yourself your body switches to starvation mode and thinks you're starving so your metabolism slows right down. This is why you stop being hungry after a few days as you pointed out. Because of this, as soon as you start eating again you put on a shit load of fat. Also your muscle is a better source of energy for your body than fat and so it will start digesting your muscle, so you will end up weak and with higher percentage body fat.
The best thing you can do to "detox" your body, is cut right down on red meat, processed foods which are high in fat and sugar, stop smoking tobacco and anything else, exercise more, drink more water to increase the function of your liver and eat more fish.

alright, first and foremost, in the interest of covering my ass, I WILL ADVISE ANYONE THINKING OF TRYING IT TO DO LOTS AND LOTS OF RESEARCH FIRST, THEN CONSULT A DOCTOR AND HAVE THE FAST SUPERVISED BY A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. i didnt give this warning in my previous post because xltronic members always proved to be ahead of the curve (or we wouldnt even be here) and wouldnt just jump into something without seriously doing their own homework first.
second, in that link it stated that the lady died from swelling of the brain due to water saturation. not the fast. in fact, she wasnt even on a fast. she was on some 500 calorie a day diet which involved drinking 4 liters a day, which she decided to chug in a span of two hours. drinking too much water in a short period of time can kill anyone, regardless of what they ate or didnt eat.
third, your body doesnt go into starvation right away. when you stop eating, in the first 4-8 hours your body eats the available glucose. after that it turns to your liver for glycogen (stored glucose) for about 12 hours. then it turns to your muscle for glucose for a few days. but your body knows it cant keep feasting on your muscles because you kind of need them, so it starts to eat your fat through a process called catabolism, which converts fat into ketone, and will sustain you until you run low on fat.
thats when starvation kicks in.
i havent experienced starvation because ive never gotten to that point. but ive read that you will definitely know when youve reached that point because you will experience true hunger. not like you do throughout the day when you want some doritos. but REAL undeniable hunger. the kind that will make you pick up the nearest cat or a mouse and bite into it if thats all thats available to you.
fasting is not some fad diet, crazy, drastic or something new. its been practiced for thousands of years for a variety of reasons. health, religious, spiritual, etc. by folks such as socrates, plato, mark twain, gandhi, to name a few...

This article also shows some of the dangerous effects including breakdown of muscle protein, organ strain, slow metabolism, negative effects on emotional state and blood sugar levels.
There's no scientific evidence to support the idea that this approach is necessary or actually beneficial. The liver and kidneys are the filters in our bodies. As long as these organs are healthy, they will adequately rid the body of any toxins – without the need to starve.

[meant to write "out of space, to be continued, but couldnt even fit that in]
so, continued...
like i said, do your own research if you plan to try it out. there are important things you should know, like how to end a fast. you cant just not eat for a few weeks then dive right into some pizza and fries. google fasting or water fast[ing] and you will find out everything you need to know, including detailed blogs and vlogs of people who have done or are doing them, providing daily/hourly updates. you'll discover its not as far out as some people think. only in certain cultures is it shocking because we're trained since birth to eat, eat, eat, and if you skip a day, or even a meal, people think something is wrong with you.
i must admit i was skeptical and a little worried when i first tried it. i always thought that if you didnt eat for a day you'd faint. if you didnt eat for a few days or a week you'd be weak and sick and could collapse and die at any minute. but as the days went by i felt like kramer in that seinfeld episode where he and the car salesman were test driving the car and kept going after the gas gadge said they were empty. i made it to my 10th day my first try. i had to stop because i had an intense desire for some homemade french fries. not any physical cravings. it was purely mental. i just desired the taste. so i stopped the fast. gradually taking in food. first juices, then soft foods/fruits, then solids. after several days i was finally ready to have a minor feast with the homemade fries.
the second time i made it the whole thirty days (which was my goal). i felt great. i can list about a hundred benefits (that i know of) i received from the fast, but i wont get into all that because i dont want to run out of space again. but one important one, which pertains to you is, when you can exercise that kind of self-control, not eating for 30 days, anything else you try to do healthwise requiring discipline and will power seems like a piece of cake by comparison.

If you want to lose weight don't fast. First, you will never be able to keep fasting long-term, your metabolism will slow to a crawl and then when you do start eating again you will pile on more weight than you ever did before. You will fuck up your metabolism.
If you want to lose weight there is only one safe and effective method. Eat between 2500-3000 calories per day with frequent meals (5 or 6 per day), exercise 3 times a week for an hour, preferably weight training as it strips fat from you quicker than any other exercise - with running you lose more water than fat. Also muscle is a fuel burner, the more of it you have, the more calories you will burn during the day just sitting there.
