The first thing to do is realise that you have a problem and
decide that you are prepared to do something about it.
Like most things, having a some sort of plan really helps.

Think of really simple things that will improve your life.
Try to do them whenever you are able to. Don't get fed up if
you don't do one, just do something else. Make them diverse
so you can do at least one a day. Remember to feel glad when
you've done one because you're actively improving your
life.
The biggest barrier is mental attitude. You must think
positively.

So, maybe have a piece of fruit with your lunch.

Go for a short walk in the evening to relax and burn off a
few calories.

Turn off the television and internet, put on some music and
look out of the window and let your thoughts drift.

Don't stay up late watching rubbish/channel hopping on the
TV. Get some sleep. Only stay up late if there is something
you specifically want to watch.

Do things when you are in the mood, don't try to force
yourself. Wait until you are ready and then do it, don't
slack off.

Don't put things off, they won't go away.

Cook a meal with fresh ingredients for dinner instead of
take away.

Telephone someone you haven't seen for a long time and
communicate.

Sit up straight if slouching.

Replace a sugary snack with something with a slower energy
release (bananas are great) so you don't get a high then a
low.

Replace a cup of coffee with tea.

Set conditions: I will have a beer/fag/whatever only when
I've done some simple chore I've been putting off.

Don't set any difficult goals. Make it really easy to do a
single task. You might do 1 a day, you might do 10. Just
ensure you think "I'm doing this, it's pretty easy and I'm a
fucking superstar for actually sticking to my plan" every
time you do something. So what if they are trivial, they are
better than the alternative you might be doing! KEEP IT
SIMPLE.

The absolute most important thing is to keep a positive
attitude.

All you have to do, if you're a fat fatty, is play doom2 79
hours a day like me. You get so focused that everything else
is a chore including eating, bathing, socializing, going
outside, etc. My laziness is expressed in overly skinniness
rather than fatness. Its the doom2 diet.

The water fast that steve mentioned is one of the stupidest
pieces of advice anyone could give. Any doctor that is
willing to take part in a long-term water fast should have
his medical license taken away.

If you want to detox your body, the best and safest way to
do it is drink nothing but water for about 1-2 weeks. Drink
lots. About 3-4 liters a day (for men, 1 liter less for
women). Eat as you normally would (well, try to make healthy
choices instead of eating fast food and such). Most
beverages are filled with sugar and other useless things
that you system will quickly process and this usually ends
up slowing down your metabolism. Most juices and sodas are
about as nutritious as candy.

If you do this, remember to make sure you are eating enough
salt as drinking lots of water can cause an electrolyte
imbalance.

some great advice in this thread about books and looking out
the window being healthier than television and video games

sometimes i wonder if overall i'd be better off if i had no
tv, computer or internet. wen i lived in france for a while
i had none of these and just read instead. it was great ive
never read so many books. apart from that i'd be out
working, socialising or looking round paris. i never lazed
around doing fuck all, like we all do late night on the net
or channel hopping in front of the tv wen we should be in
bed.

instead of the nightly beer you could swap it for red wine.
it has some health benefits, provided it's drunk in
moderation etc etc (im sure u cud pull up loads of articles
about the damage it does, but if youre drinking beer anyway
you might as well swap. anti oxidants etc).

I don't know if there is any practical reason other than the
fact that its easier to moderate your inactive time with a
book than a video game or the internet.

However, television flickers put your mind at a resting
state that is similar to sleep. I have a feeling that
affects your metabolism.

You knew what you were getting into when you read this
thread. Its not like the post was nested in a topic about
music or video games. You didn't need to read the thread,
and you certainly didn't need to post in it. Why are you
complaining?

Anyways, being healthy isn't so much about aesthetics as it
is about feeling good. It looks like the topic set you of
some, which indicates you might have some issues with self
image. You may want to address that.

Geez I missed this thread. I've been on a health kick for a
while now. Also doing some inside reworking. I'm a fucking
fit , confidence filled, alpha male radiating positivity
that has been awesome for chicks and making me want to get
up in the morning. A fantastic change from being a self
loathing loser who was on the brink of suicide every other
week.

If you want to loose weight, Stop eating dairy as well and
GO VEGETARIAN! Lot's of vegetables have NEGATIVE CALORIES,
which mean your body burns more digesting them, then they
give. Dairy is just gonna fatten you up, plus all the
hormones in it fuck you up. In the USA they put RBGH in the
milk (look it up on the net).

Buy some FLAX OIL, or HEMP OIL. Omega 3-6-9 and amazing for
making you not feel like shit Drink lot's of water too, but
this water diet thing is kind of ... err doesn't make much
sense :P

Go to the gym !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scientifically makes you feel great, and also you will BURN
CALORIES !

FAT IS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! Don't cut the good fat out of your
body. Buy that 20$ bottle of FLAX or HEMP OIL, your body
needs it! You'll notice a difference !

I feel obliged to push my suggestions on you because it
worked so well for me, it really turned my life around!

I'm trying to cut back on dairy but it's tough because I
love cheese so much! Still, you're right, even "low-fat"
cheeses have more calories from fat than I should be eating.
I buy smart balance butter substitute now which is made from
vegetable and flax oils and can't remember the last time I
bought real butter. What I need is a gym membership because
jogging sucks too much. Also I've grown into the habit of
buying fresh herbs to flavor my vegetables, which means I
use less salt, and no cheese or butter like I used to. Dill
+ anything is delicious. :)

my 5 cents:

-avoid aspartame and similar artificial sweeteners at all
costs (it's difficult. check the label on everything you
buy)
-try to find fluoride-free toothpaste
-get raw instead of refined sugar
-eat raw carrots as snacks
-eat dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate. it's
brainfood and tastes better when you get used to it, like
going from coffee with milk and sugar to black.

will it make a difference? i don't know but i still
recommend all of these things (besides eating normally
(varied) with little to no meat, fruit daily etc).

mmmfood

Raw Vegetables make a HUGE difference because your body
really needs the enzymes they provide. Big player in
building neurons and stuff for the brain and protein stuff.

I agree with the fluoride-free toothpaste, 'green beaver' is
pretty good.

Raw vegetables is a problem for me because they tend to give
me indigestion. To avoid this I cook them. From what I
understand, it's alright to thoroughly cook vegetables as
long as you drink the juices which cook out of them (known
as the "pot liquor"). This can be done by using the pot
liquor as a broth for soup, or just by drinking it (it's
good!).

hi ive just started trying out frozen veg ...as they freeze
them just after picking. ...then you only have to boil them
for 3- 4 minutes which is strange....as fresh veg is usually
6 -7 mins...

1.2 kilo mixing veg for ....£1.10 or somthing ...real cheap
but nice.

get rid of sugar .....sugar is what makes you groggy
....that groggy feeling.. like you drank a thimble of bleach
( not enought omake you sick...just enough to make you feel
a bit groggy.

and ..... cut out the dairy......try humous instead of
chees.

rice soya milk instead of cows breast jiuce

filter water,

open windows in your house more for fresh air.

wave arms around ....like in a swimming fashion to get
oxegen into your upper body..

etc.....

oh yeah and stretch .... i forget to stretch for days n
days....its good for getting oxegen deep into your muscles.

avoid chemicals...they get into your skin and make you feel
groggy ( i hate that word) as much as i haet feeling it.)

remeeber wear rubber gloves.....it could be just the kitchen
cleaner that make syou feel crap.

or the air freshners! and joss sticks too....fill the room
full of amonia n stuff.....almost as bad as pasive
smoking.

good morning bye.

Negative calorie foods are a myth. Everything that goes in
will get put in to your body one way or another. However, if
you eat a lot of foods that take more to process, you can
improve your metabolism by around 5-10%.

I have taken to vegetarianism too. I find I feel a lot more
energy when meat isn't a regular part of my diet. Well,
thats not totally true. I eat chicken once a week (after my
first workout of the week), and fish every second day.

Don't smoke. Don't drink alcohol. Don't take drugs. Don't
eat "fast" or processed foods. Don't drink carbonated
"soft" drinks. Eat a minimum of red meat and be careful how
you cook it (no charcoal). Don't eat cured meat products,
especially cooked cured meats (bacon). Eat numerous and
varied fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. (organic if you
can but no need to get hung up on it). Partake in varied,
daily exercise (do whatever your body can do... run, cycle,
walk, swim, ski, skate, box. Keeping away fropm high impact
exercise might be a good idea, but it shouldn't stop you
doing things you enjoy...... and thats the most important
thing, enjoy your exercise.)

Associate with positive, friendly, joyous people. Limit
your contact with negative, angry, violent people. Make
changes in your social circle if needed to achieve these
ends. Move to another suburb/city/country if you have to.
Seek professional help for any medical concerns you might
have, including any mental health problems. Shop around
untill you find an EXCELLENT doctor. Most people spend more
energy finding a hairdresser they like than a doctor.

Be happy. Do what it takes to be happy. Do not accept
unhappiness.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already but eating
small meals every 3 or so hours will speed up your
metabolism.

When it comes to unhealthy foods you like, eat in
moderation... having a KFC once every few months will not
kill you as long as your diet in general is good.

To make this the briefest advice... just eat mostly
'natural' foods.
