Commercials are completely stupid and i dont think they
affect anything. Its better than selling out to some label
where they own the rights to your music etc. These artists
are in it for the right reasons and didnt sell out in the
beginning so in my opinion there justified. Some were along
the way they decided to quit there jobs and make music which
is how they got were they are. One of the reasons i like
IDM is because your average everyday joe doesnt get it, it
's not appealing to a good chunk of the population. So
these artist dont sell millions and millions of copies like
the more mainstream artist, when they get these
opportunities to make money i think they really deserve it .

A generic term for music like Aphex Twin. It stands for
'Intelligent Dance Music'. Clever, eh? =|

i don't think 'intelligent' nor 'dance' is quite the word to
describe it...

Exactly.

Especially 'dance'. It just makes it sound like it's house
or something, and house is nowhere near 'intelligent'.

'electronica' is fine to me

however, we're getting off-topic, arent we?

They had to come up with something at the beginning of the
nineties. Maybe the term was introduced in the middle of the
nineties instead.
Back those days electronic music was not that differentiated
as these days. Lotta new styles were created since then and
lot of new feelings.

Now it really sounds overmentioned, stupid, and
pigeon-holed.

Baisically the way I have heard it explained, the BBC
determines which songs are sold to advertising companies for
use in commercials and such. At least with any music
released in countries in the UK. So if a warp or µ or
rephlex artist has a track used in a commercial its not
their choice. They still get paid for it tho.
I don't know if it is the same for artists not residing in
england that are published under a british label.

As far as I am concerned, its ok if a song I like is used in
a commercial. I personally think commercials are great, and
the best way to subvert their influence is to enjoy (for
whatever reason) the commercials and NOT buy the product. I
am also going to be doing something sometime soon where I
beatmix about 50 or 60 commercial soundtrax into a half hour
continuous mix.

The sad thing is, advertising is one of the most potent
artforms of the late twentieth century, and prolly the
earlier twenty first.
