you were doing last night you sly twat'

Babies don't make people shy, they see you in the moment as
you actually are. They don't see your new balance trainers
or your cravat and judge how many Mp3s you've thieved from
Chris Clark. Just be natural with them and they'll like
you.

i believe that when you look at a baby it's a reminder to
yourself of absolute and complete innocence and i think we
find that sometimes quite shocking. in many ways it is like
looking into an emotional mirror. obviously not all people
feel awkward or uncomfortable around babies but there is
definitely something raw in their presence. something which
cuts right through you to the core.

I always get nervous when a baby or small child stares at
me. There's something about eye contact with them.
JivverDicker put it in an interesting way, 'they see you
in the moment as you actually are.'

It feels like they're looking past something, everything,
and getting right to my soul at the back of my eyes, it's
very penetrating and makes me nervous. Then I look away and
look back a bit later to find they're still fixated on my
eyes.

They've sensed my nervousness, and now they're
investigating. Investigating this giant and why it's so
weird, why is this giant nervous? What a strange giant. I'm
gonna keep looking cause I love to look at things amusing.

So why am I shy when a baby looks into my eyes, and others
aren't. I think it's cause I've never in my life enjoyed
making eye contact with others, since I was around 5 or 6
and to this day, during conversations short or long, I look
elsewhere from the talker. This applies for family and best
friends too. Except my girlfriend, I don't have a problem
with eye contact there. Weird.

Totally! I read somewhere a piece of advice was to carry a
picture of yourself when you were a baby in your wallet. It
guilt trips you into doing the 'right' thing and thinking
"How and why would you do this to this pure thing." or
something like that.

a baby has never made me shy, nor have i ever been aware of
the phenomenon that is babies making people shy.

is this a common thing or what?

its just that youre not socialized into being around them.
until i spent two weeks in a maternity ward, i was very
uncomfortable around babies. by the end of my stay, i was
carrying them around, talking to them and changing their
nappies :)

are New Balance trainers cool again then? I had some when I
was 16 and I thought I was the Height of Fashion.

i've been giving that one some serious thought.
please choose from the following witicisms:

a) i guess as long as they don't call me surely.

b) depends on how early they get a job.

c) yes, since my 401k was cut, i'll need them to wipe my ass
when i'm 90.

i don't get this "shy around babies" thing either. i see
them as this shapeless form which you have the opportunity
to mold and warp and fuck up however you feel appropriate.
you can say anything to a baby and they're more than likely
going to be okay with it.

Anonymous babies who stare at you on a bus for extended
periods can be a bit disconcerting, but generally I think
they're great. I once sat next to the sweetest little girl
ever (and her mother) and she had the most amazing smile and
glow around her. Kids just crave attention really and want
to connect to people around them.

My baby niece has a habbit of sizing people up for about 5
minutes when she first meets them and will stare at them
really hard. After a while, she'll open up and then you
can't shut her up.

Everything is like an adventure with them.

I personally believe that babies make people shy because,
uh, some people out there in our nation don't have babies,
and, uh, I believe that our education like such as in South
Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and I
believe that they should, our education over here in the
U.S. should help the U.S., er, should help South Africa and
should help the Iraq and the Asian babies, so we will be
able to build up our future for our children.

I believe that babies don't make people shy. People feel
uncomfertable because they can't interact with this human
been like they used to (unless they have seen many babies
before).
They just don't know how to behave and therefor get shy,
isn't it?

As has been said, people don't know how to react when they
are presented with a baby. This makes them uncomfortable.

I agree with Aesthetics.

Similar thing when people meet mentally disabled people.
