I feel like such an IDM n00b.

I am only just discovering Raczynski and BOC. I discovered
AFX 2 years ago, FFS!

I mean, I have discovered a lot of slightly more obscure
artists that I couldn't imagine being without now on this
here forum, but Racsynski, while not mainstream, is not
obscure. And BOC is def. mainsteam! No excuse there. Of
course I have heard of both of these before now, but it is
only now that I have decided to have a proper listen to
these two artists.

Yeah, so just thought I should share my surprise and shame
with everyone here.

Listening to 'boku no wakaran' currently which is fun,
interesting and fucking bangin' and downloading a lot of
BOC, which I have liked all of so far...

Everyone was right about Raczynski- he has an intimate tone
to his music. Maybe it is the fact that he prolly made most
of his music for his own pleasure, rather trying to make it
accessible. Maybe I'm wrong, dunno. It sure as hell is
good-ass shit, anyhow! :)

Sometimes I wish I was a noob again with this IDM stuff.
Everyting would be so fresh and exciting again. For me it's
been since I discovered Aphex with I Care Because You Do,
back in the mid-90's.

Yeah, it was not that long ago since I found that album (one
of my top 10, just for Acrid Avid Jam Shred).

I guess it is nice to have new-old stuff to explore! :)

Must've been exciting to have bought Drukqs soon as it came
out, though! I bet this forum was set on fire by that album!

imagine all the people who knew about boc and bogdan before
you and how superior that made them

...well, i didn't discover xltronic until a few months ago,
so i don't know what the forums were like on Drukqs.

Sometimes i wish i could hear the old stuff with fresh ears
again, like LP5.

When i listen to a new Autechre CD for the first time it's
almost like a sacred moment.

Yeah it's too bad idm has made no progress in the past 5
years. Then we'd all be having something to look forward to.
I'll stick to my AFX, Aphex Twin, and BoC albums.

i might be releasing a idm/abstract like album next year..
its disappointing to hear that idm is dead, but i hope i can
still get some traction with my album even still. but
comments like these make me wonder if its even worth it..
i like abstract sounds and weird soundscapes and im happy
with my tracks, but if everyone feels its oh so passé,
whats the point ya know?

I disagree with MutterMenace. I think IDM is still alive.
It's just not as good- still a lot of good shit, but perhaps
one has to look harder to find it now.

cx, it is worth releasing your album! I would like to listen
to an album by someone I have talked to, because it is cool
and because then I can talk to them about it and tell them
how I really feel about it. Also you should just release it
to prove people wrong, that IDM is still alive and kicking!

In summary: I BELIEVE IN YOU, cx! :)

i will be looking forward to your intelligent album next
year then, lets hope it will be even more intelligent than
the rest of the competition.

from my point of view you just don't label your music
intelligent, that is a wrong approach.

also, little sidenote for this thread - distinctions between
genres are often made due to repetition of a certain
element, the whole point of experimental music is to move
beyond that and explore something different. maybe that is
why most people feel that idm is passé, anything that is
redoing something without revolutionizing, perfecting or
expanding the boundaries will eventually become passé.

thanks tractern :D

chuck, i label pretty much anything with weird electronic
noises and such idm, because its a term people are familiar
with.
personally i like to call it experimental, but experimental
can be acoustic as well.
id like to think im doing something new(or at least
refreshing or enjoyable, and not boring and old), but to
many maybe im not, either way ill stop using the term idm.
that abbreviation is just cursed now

Basically dude, you have to do what you love and fuck what
everyone thinks. If one person really loves what you do it's
enough. That has what has kept me going.

I don't really have any patience for a lot of this so called
"IDM" stuff. Mainly because there is so much dross out there
but I am sure if I went looking really hard I would find
something I enjoy. Unfortunately I have bigger fish to fry
at the moment my own things to create.

I will be looking out for the annoucement of your album
though dude.

: )

tell you one thing. if i were to start again, i'd probably
buy all of my really favorite stuff in vinyl too. just the
really best stuff, for archive value alone. just to know i'm
covered if the CD ever dies.

can we all start calling it 'electronic listening music'
instead of IDM, like it should have been in the first
place?

Listening Music? As opposed to what other kind of music?

ELM is catchy though- like it! :)

The music goes well witht the vid, since the cat is quite
weird. ^^

I would expect a more realistic robo-kitty from Japan
though...
