Autechre's still my favorite. I'll eat up anything they release as long as they make music.
It's just that since the 1-2 punch of Confield and Gantz Graf (specifically I'm talking Dial and Cap.IV- for me the pinnacle of "IDM") their albums seem a bit more rushed, a bit less innovative. Still great but they're not pushing it like they used to.
Their live stuff keeps getting better and better though. --
Aphex, meh. Analord is pretty good but it dosen't touch drukQs. 24 remixes dosent even count... what does that leave... smojphace?...
I'm sure he has some absolutely devastating unreleased stuff, but that just annoys me even more.

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and in some ways I figure maybe we all grew up a little bit.
Maybe the music was so new and interesting back in 90s and early 00s, and nowadays we are not as into it.
What would have happened if quaristice was released in 99? Would we all be into it a lot more?
Personally, I'm totally into tankakern and have been since it came out, but the other tracks not so much so.
I have more faves on quadrange. But I wonder if the "collective consciousness" has somehow shifted a bit, since reading forums all the time about how artists arent as good as they used to be must certainly leave an impression.
I feel boc's THC is AWESOME, and i had a lot of good moments, and in many ways I can't relate to what you mean, but in some ways i can because it is indeed different.
I just feel maybe not only the music changed, but also us as people, and that we may not be giving the music a fair chance.

RDJ peaked with the Tuss, no contest if you think that isn't innovating enough you need to listen again, for reals dawg!!
Squarepusher peaked with Venus no.17 but I still have hopes the new EP will be good.
Dopplereffekt, peaked in 1996/7, but I still have hopes and one of the new tracks from the live sets sounds better than anything from the analog period.

Calabi has two/three good tracks compared to his past works where all tracks were banging, his albums have way too much filler.

draft 7.30 for ae for me incredible, as 'good' as untilted is, it just doesn't have the same effect that draft did ... but that could be emotion based / time period, not nec music is better/wose.
thc killed me for boc. it is so polished and good sounding, and all the little slick sounds are strategically placed; it sounds like a very very good cover band making boc music...it's still good, but it doesnt have nearly same effect as geogaddi (which i think was the top of the top)
the tuss is some of the best stuff ive heard yet, from drukqs; not much room to complain. still room for improvement on the haircut, tho

they might have set the bar so ridiculously high that they can't ever top themselves... or your expectations of what they should be doing has been set so ridiculously high that no matter what they produce will never satisfy what you want to hear.

you nailed it.
this whole machine had been building and building and then finally we reached the summit...
drukQs confield go plastic! geogaddi empty the bones of you (I hold this in higher regard than some here)
--- all within a couple years
the bar was just set insanely high, like you said.
where do you go from there? is there anywhere left to go? everyone seems to have gone "retro" a bit, back to roots.

artists get more laid back as they get older. maybe sometimes they are more comfortable in their skill but a tad less ambitious. it is just good when they still release work that is interesting and of a high quality, even if their most essential work is behind them. it is bad when they completely sell out or jump the shark, which i don't think has happened with any of these guys.
i dunno about drukqs being the peak for rdj. there are very very good tracks, but listening to that one as an album is hard for me. the flow is all off, and there are probably 2 or 3 smaller releases that could have been made from that sock drawer of tracks. its like putting john cage and breakcore into a playlist together, unless the different ideas have been integrated somehow i don't think it vibes. i end up skipping tracks that i wouldn't have had they been grouped with like tracks.

Again, I disagree. I think that they make what they want to make and explore musically what interests them. Sort of like what they did when they made that mind blowing music you seem to be hung up on. If you like it well, that's great... and if you don't, I don't think it dampers their much day either.
