that's the most boring formulaic shit i could conceive. rephlex must be criminally lacking in inspiration to have signed wisp, i can only imagine tusschard did it to try and make his own releases seem hold a bit more spark by comparison.
god i'm so old and wish it was 1998!

either that or richard actually likes wisp (he's played his tunes live in dj sets on at least TWO occasions, that makes him a fanboi right?)
i think the samples are awesome. they are afx-ish, but then again it is wisp, and he's been sounding more and more afx-ish with his releases. still though, i'm really looking forward to this :)

It's good to have more aphex-sounding music for aphex fans to enjoy. Aphex hasn't released much music recently. This is a pretty good simulacrum.

But personally, I think he should stop listening to IDM totally and listen to some other music for the next few years. Then let's hear what he will come up with.

maybe wisp will fill the actual acidrill afx space in rephlex, and then aphex will move on to a new sound new style... thatd be great...

Why is it just an EP now, surely the world needs a whole double LPs worth of derivative APhex-lite?
This is like Music 70 signing Tycho.

anyway the actual tracks are nice, but it's hard to get past just how shamelessly aphex-ripped they are. if rephlex released this anonymously, there would be no question that 99% of people would think it was an aphex record.
thats not a bad thing in itself and shows that wisp is a capable producer.
just one completely devoid of his own ideas.

Not bad. I see the Aphex connection but nothing in the samples really shout Aphex. It's pretty decent and certainly a lot better than most other peoplesnares.

Honor Beats had at least a sense of uniqueness about it. This is almost indistinguisable from The Tuss in my opinion.
As I say, theres nothing fundamentaly wrong with that and I actually really like the tracks, but it's obvious that he made these with the intention of sounding as close to Aphex as possible.
Wasn't The Tuss' myspace page made by Wisp? I guess it makes sense that his actual release on Rephlex sounds like this.

I do kinda agree with lupus- this is a little generic. Still pretty good, but it's been done. A long time ago. Melody sounds like AFX, but not rhythm.
I would prefer something original but badly executed, than derivative and well made. Therefore I am not excited by Wisp.

These samples have the pervasive odour of Desperate, Cluless, Personality-Free Wanabee, just the sort of limited demographic that will buy it. Music is a near inifinite entity yet Wisp "just so happens" to sound like Aphex's poor relation, on his very own label. What were the odds?

well, if you have spent any significant amount of time listening to aphex twin, and then listen to the tuss, i don't see how you can dispute hearing rdj in there. i listen to this wisp stuff, and while i can tell he really really likes aphex twin, i can also tell that it is someone else.
that being said, i can hear parts in the tuss that do not sound like rdj to me. for instance the shuffle on last rushup 10 with that bass funk does not sound like something he usually would do (vibert or jenkinson maybe). it could be just because it's a different project, or it could be because there are others involved. the tuss sounds like the name you would give a crew or posse. i think the tuss is rdj with guest artists from rephlex and other related labels. final answer.
also, about wisp. if he really wants to faithfully recreate the music that he listens to and wear his heart on his sleeve, so what? some people want to pioneer a new sound and hit people with something in a way they never heard it, and others hear some really good music and say that is the music i like, i want to figure out how to make music just like that. it is what it is, and its like that in any genre.

Here is an idea: Aphex signed Wisp because he wants to hear Aphexey music, which he hasn't made.
Background: I once saw a documentary about Pink Floyd. David Gilmore said he is really sad that he could never experience Dark Side of the Moon like the rest of the world. Everyone else plays the LP for the first time and it was amazing experience, but for him he had heard all bits of it over and over beforehand, it could never be anything like a music lover returning from record shop and listening to it first time....
For Aphex, all the decent aphexey style music comes from him. He can't hear his own music for the first time, like Gilmore couldn't. So he likes Wisp to make music in the style he likes, and it is brand new. He doesn't listen to it thinking "hhhmm maybe I need to EQ that a bit different" or whatever the hell he thinks.
However, I have a sneaky suspicion I may be talking absolute bollocks.
Finally, I would like to add my support to this great statement:
"I would prefer something original but badly executed, than derivative and well made. " Indeed.

I don't think it sounds anything like aphex at all.
I don't think it sounds very good, either. Disappointing. In track 1, the melody, rhythm and rhythm samples are 95% the same as another wisp song which unfortunately I can't find at the moment.
I think it was on the Math & Science live set he did, so maybe it's just a new version of a song that wasn't released, which is alright I guess, but if not.... :/

Anyone who says it doesn't sound like AFX has either listened to so many Aphex-derivative artists that this sound has become just one more genre to be plundered, or they're listening far too closely to an element I can't hear. This says "I wish I was Aphex Twin, I've dedicated a good part of my life to copying him and now I'm on his label.. yipeeeeeeeeee"

Is this a bad thing?
I think Wisp makes good music in a certain style. I also think that his music can be identified as his own. All the people slagging him off are being rather ridiculous

Rephlex has always had a problem with people saying that their artists sound like Aphex. When the Scharlach Eingang EP by Bochum Welt came out the first thing my friend said, in the store, was that that it sounded like Aphex. This is old news. Mu-ziq sounded like Aphex, Kinesthesia sounded like Aphex, Bochum Welt sounded like Aphex, D'Arcangelo sounded like Aphex, and Chaos A.D. sounded like Aphex or etc. like maybe Ovuca, Lory D, Astrobotnia, etc. Old news. I don't want to offend anyone it's just that this is an old topic.
