New Apple user - advice please

Hello, my first apple computer has arrived today. I haven't
purchased the apple care plan yet as the store I purchased
it from offers their own warranty service. I have 30 days
from the date of purchase to decide which service I want, if
either.

So, could the mac users on this forum offer any advice?
Should I worry about a brand new mac having problems which
might require the warranty service? I've heard that the
macbooks often suffer battery problems, but I've bought a
desktop so it shouldn't be affected by that issue.

Also, this being my first mac, I'm unsure about what virus
and spyware protection is best for Apple computers. Any
advice on this subject would be helpful.

Finally, I use Mozilla Firefox on my PCs, should I continue
to use it on my Mac, or is there a better browser you might
recommend?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks :]

The new model is out next month you loon! Why did you buy it
now?

well, partly because I didn't do any research into when the
next iteration was being released (my fault), and partly
because I figured Apple, whenever they did decide to
release something new, would charge more than it's really
worth.

Although, if it's going to be the same price as what I paid,
I submit here and now that I am an ass. =/

I was joking...if you always wait for what is just around
the corner then you would never end up buying anything.

buy the extended warranty now, period. macs usually start to
have problems a month after the normal warranty expires. at
least that's what happened to me, both with an eMac G4
desktop (burner fucked dup) and with a MacBook pro (battery
related issues).

don't worry about viruses, but pay attention if you use k'ed
software cos some developers have been including malware in
their little progs. that caused the deletion of users'
entire home directory, which is illegal in any case.

little snitch and/or netbarrier are way enough to get
rid of thoughts imo.

safari is the best browser ever.

haha yeah I'm thinking far too seriously... I guess that's
because I don't know nearly as much about macs as I do
PC's... Feeling a bit like a child learning to swim today.

its a classic case, sir. nothing to be ashamed of.

i never bothered getting apple care, although if you see
yourself with a bit of oscillik in you, you might want to
get it. i had a 3 year imac die on me not too long ago and
it got fixed free of charge. the battery on my macbook is a
bit fucked though, but they have an exchange program on
that, so i'm just waiting for it to fuck out completely and
get it replaced.

never bothered with virus protection, but there might be
something ready to wreck havoc soon, i dunno. I think the
user can do most harm to ones macincomputer.

Just continue using Firefox, there's nothing wrong in that.
Should make the transition a bit easier.

true, especially do not mess with the system folder and
preferences files! playing with permissions on a mac can be
pretty dangerous, you might want to do regular system
maintenance using Disk Utility and DiskWarrior

don't bother with anti virus software it's a waste of money,
iv'e never had any problems.

it takes a little while to get used to a mac, but once you
get the hang of them, they are the best machines

i got a macbook and they released the new one about a week
later but they swapped it for me, i have had an imac and
this macbook and never had the protection plan thing and,
touch wood, havent had any issues so far.

never used antivirus software, never had a virus.

i use firefox 3 even though safari is good i think their are
more plugins for firefox that im just used to (developer
toolbar, delicious etc)

anyway you will probably start to wonder why you used
windows for so long, kiss goodbye to crashes, labourious
processes, annoying popup windows, stupid questions, etc etc
etc

Does anyone know how to check your computer's hardware from
within mac os? Basically, I'd like to double check that this
computer has the right amount of ram and harddisk space,
that sort of thing. To give you a better idea of the info
I'm after, in windows you can get this information by right
clicking on 'my computer' and viewing the properties.
Thanks.

if it really is a totally new revision (enclosure etc) it'll
prolly be about nine months till apple straightens out all
the manufacturing bugs so i wouldn't feel too bad about
purchasing now.

This is probably going to be a very silly question, but
which is the correct way to load a disc into the slot-drive?
I put a disc in, with the label facing me about 2/3rds of
the way into the drive and it didn't grab the disc as I
would have expected it to. Should the top (label) side be
facing away from me when loading the disc?

Oh I see, you have to put it like 95% of the way into the
slot before it auto-loads. good to know :)

Do you have a mac store near you?

If so there is no point getting the warranty apple care
stuff, I took mine into the mac store and they were really
helpful my hard drive died but luckely I was running time
machine and that did a great job of restoring everything
after I put in a new drive.

Well, I know that there is one in a large mall about 2.5 hrs
drive from me. I know the route well enough that aside from
taking the time to drive out there, visiting it would be
relatively painless. I'm browsing apple's website trying to
find a store locator but have thus far been unsuccessful.
I'll keep looking, perhaps there's a closer location in my
area.

that does seem useful. I downloaded and was about to install
it, but it said something about it not being compatible with
10.5.4. Also it said something about making sure I've got
any other fan speed programs uninstalled... mac o/s doesn't
have a built in one, right?

can't really be bothered to read this thread, but... all
apple hardware is covered by one year warranty anyway
(applecare). this is worldwide. you can take it to any
Authorized Service Provider and get it looked at and fixed
for free. note: this does not include software issues (but
alot of places will still check it over if it's within the
first year)

anytime in the first year you can buy the applecare
extension for an extra 2 years. this makes a lot of sense
with most machines because all it takes is a graphics card
to fail (for instance) and applecare has paid for itself.
having said that, it's more of peace of mind.

also note: applecare does not cover any accidental damage.
so if you spill beer into your macbook you'll get a very
hefty quote for repairs (like the cost of a new machine). so
get it covered on household insurance too

good to buy a tried and tested model - the first version of

hi again, I was just searching for the 'print screen' button
on my mac keyboard and I don't believe I see one. Is there a
keyboard shortcut I can use, or any free programs for mac
that can do screen capture? thanks.

trick. still interested to learn if there's a keyboard
command that does a full screen capture, though.

I just got a new macbook too-- get the applecare, I've had
2 other mac laptops that've met bitter ends in dangerous
lifestyles. Some guy like me might come along and drop your
shit on its head, get the warranty.

Look into the fact/potentiality of your newfound UNIXiness.
There is a huge domain of nix geekdom and added
functionality available, a lot of it you can find through
apple's portals among other places. There should be a
screen cap-- I think it is, yes, it is, cmd-shift-3

Also, I can't remember the shortcut, but you can zoom on
screen as well. Also, check out "grapher" which should come
preinstalled on your machine-- you can use it to render
things JUST LIKE YOUR SWEET AVATAR (nice interference
pattern, homeslice!!) --- open up grapher, load the torus
example (or any others you desire)--- it helps if you are
familiar with,.. whatsitcalled...

oh yeah math

congratulations, you are thinking different, but don't get
attached to the brand, it will eat your soul

you'll find a gift on your desktop.

do not fear using the built in help system. it is actually
quite useful.

Saint Steve Jobs of Cupertino has decreed that Apple stuff
will never go wrong, so you don't need a warranty.

Of course when it does go wrong it's your fault, but you're
too infatuated by those pastel shades and curved edges to
care!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your box of massively over priced
off the shelf PC parts and fruit based operating system.
