you're not fooling anyone pawel.

you're also not entertaining anyone, helping anyone,
intimidating anyone, or teaching anyone. It's in your best
interest to fuck off.

buy some tape cassettes, some paper and paints, a couple of
books, some kind of drugs, a naughty young vixen and forget
about the computer

yeah the mac vs pc debate is so crap
C64 vs Spectrum was much better
just chuck the macs away and then we don't need to argue
which is better any more

was going to get a new macbook for music stuff - should I
get the white (oldstyle) one with the firewire port or the
new sexy one without the firewire? I'm thinking the old one
as I've got a Firewire 410 and always thought USB is shit
for audio. But would appreciate advice from some Mac
users...

Oh yeh, can't afford the MacBook Pro

no Firewire = ripoff.

the 2 only good thing about the new series is the sturdy
case, and the better screen panels. Apparently the trackpad
does not work too well.

the white one is not exactly powerful me thinks... but
cheaper...
should be sufficient for music stuff though?

if i needed to buy a computer now, i'd go for a (not so)
used MacBook Pro from someone who upgrades to the current
generation...

thanks Blaaard. What about getting white one and paying
extra for 4GB ram and extra hard drive space?

you're forgetting the nvidia chipset, which is a boon if
you're into video/gaming. otherwise it's pretty meh.

i have a number of friends who are buying refurbed top end
'books from the last gen, which are now only ~$1100 and are
fairly comparable in performance.

Get a PC. Macs are slower than PCs and constanly freeze.
Plus my old Mac always used to get viruses.
Also, most Mac users are fags, so unless you want to be
associated with men who have anal sex with each other, I
suggest going with a PC instead.

ya, that could be a good alternative.... ram modules are
much cheaper for that model....
hmmm. depending on how carfully you handle the plastic
macbook, the case might break at some point.

really depends on how much money you want to spend.. you
clearly get more bang for more bucks.

but the new models aren't really worth it imo. the lack of
firewire... such a nice connection. you could use a book as
an external fw harddrive to another mac if you boot using
target disk mode... gone. (fast!) ethernet over fw... gone.
fw audio interfaces and video cameras... gone. and what new
connectivity do you get? you'll have to *buy* at least one
adoptor for connecting them to an external monitor... two if
you have a vga screen. wtf? ehh?

mohamed has some great ideas and recommendations for
software that took me ages to find on my own at one point
doing "research" (ie google). so pardon my repeating some
things if it crops up.

buy applecare.
I've read horror stories, and just look at the gripes on
apple.com in the help section.

clamxav is good if you are paranoid about the virus thing,
which is reasonable really. also trend micro housecall is
done online (I'm sure you give away your info though) and
free as well.

free software:
vlc - the greatest media player
crohn scripts (found somewhere, not software necessarily) -
for routinely cleaning up your linux based mac os x ala
linux style
Bean - textedit replacement which loads extremely fast
caffeine - prevents your computer from sleeping during a
movie or the screen saver from turning on
Onyx - not need if there are the Chron scripts present
though, and the scripts do it all behind the scenes
NeoOffice - for when Bean is not enough
JustLooking - a Preview replacement... simple and fast with
a nicer interface
Flip4Mac - for those pesky wmv streaming files
XLD - IMO the greatest audio converter
MPEG Streamclip - for simple and trustworthy movie
conversion
Transmission - best damn on for those torrent files IMO of
course
Cyberduck - nice FTP interface
Adium - best chat client as I'd be surprised if it didn't
cover any service... and highly customizable as well.

may not be free, but there are free alternatives perhaps:
xslimmer - reduces file size, getting rid of language packs
and power pc compatibility
cleanapp - comprehensive obscure file deletion and cleans up
the computer if desired by deleting various cache files

there are many free pieces of software built into that Mac
that are very reliable.
and if you get crafty enough... some Linux stuff is
available online as well with a little bit of work.

I'd just like to point out that mac is not linux based. It
is based on BSD, which is a flavour of UNIX. Linux is UNIX
compatible, but is not directly derived from UNIX as such.
Like Linux, Mac OSX is POSIX compliant, meaning it conforms
to a standard of being "unix-like". Therefore you can do a
hell of a lot of useful stuff like cron jobs within macs if
you know how.
