Blimey, 15 years on and this track is still the business.

This song is amazing on so many levels. Balil songs make up
my top 5 favorite songs of all time, and this happens to be
#2. Whenever this song gets dropped in a mix on discogs
people always comment on how great of a tune it is.

Hear that Ed? More more more!

yes. and that holds for the entire album it came from.
especially the last couple of tracks, starting with merck.
that moody intro always strikes a cord, no matter what mood
i'm in.

aye, Merck is sheer class also. they don't make them like
that anymore.

offline NewSkoolScience from Outer Bongolia on 2008-06-14 14:02 [#02215866]
Points: 457 Status: Lurker

revpersona, what fills out that top 5 then?

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2008-06-14 14:27 [#02215872]
Points: 3167 Status: Lurker

My all time top 5 are:

Merck
3/4 heart
Choke and Fly
The Whirling of Spirirts
Island Paradise

6. Shambala Remix

And 'Bytes' does happen to be my #1 album. :]

There's too many good things to say about the little
discography of Balil. Emotive Techno of the highest order.
(More-so than the "big names" from 313 IMO.) You also have
what is my favorite Trance track ever in "Parasight." I
could go on and on.

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2008-06-14 14:42 [#02215874]
Points: 3167 Status: Lurker

More of that "emotive techno" stuff:

Genius

there's at least on track missing in that list:
into the other world (black dog mix)
it's brilliant how they managed to fit in both emotions and
cold techno in into that track.

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2008-06-14 14:53 [#02215878]
Points: 3167 Status: Lurker

Yes, that is a great remix as is all of the old-black dog
ones. Their remix of Alter-Ego's 'Tanksahead' is jaw
dropping. I don't care what anyone says, no one is as good
as Ed and Andy at remixing tracks. When I hear the orginal
track and then I hear their remix in whatever guise, it's
really no comparison.

I forget where I read it, but someone asked Mark Pritchard
what his favorite remix of his tunes was, and sure enough it
was The Black Dog remix.

Rev Rev Rev, what was that track you recommended once, it
wasn't Black Dog, but it was Ambient Techno, I don't know if
the artist or track name contained the word Caravan..
something. It was dead good and I can't... remember what it
was to look it up. THINK MAN!

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2008-06-14 15:50 [#02215895]
Points: 3167 Status: Lurker

Hm, the only thing that comes to mind is:

Caravan Voyeur - Blimpsound

I got the track on my old PC.

offline NewSkoolScience from Outer Bongolia on 2008-06-14 18:22 [#02215952]

Aye, Bytes is probably my favourite album too, it's the one
that started it all for me back then (along with Incunabula,
Ginger, Fuse, Polygon, Accelerator etc.). I think it stands
up against the test of time far better than any of its [AI]
contempories.

ah, the As One remix is just perfect. Refections on
Reflections is good un.

Island Paradise is one I've never been able to track down.
was it not casette only or something ridiculous like that?

offline revpersona from Plainfield (United States) on 2008-06-14 23:19 [#02215975]
Points: 3167 Status: Lurker

Yep, cassette only, but Plaidzebra a ways back had the
track, just labeled incorrectly. Once I get some stuff
transfered off my old PC I can host it somewhere for you to
listen to. Plaid have used the beginning part of the song
in a mix they did a few years ago, so I am curious if they
have rights to the track yet or not. If they do they need
to get this track out. I would love for a vinyl pressing,
but at least get it onto bleep or something.

Also, supposedly there is/was an unreleased Balil LP/EP that
never made it out on Rising High. I think Intruder said he
had a bootleg of it, but I don't think he comes around here
anymore. What I would give to be able to hear those
tracks...

offline onecaseman from Chicago (United States) on 2008-06-15 16:55 [#02216176]

Man, all of the old Balil stuff was brilliant.

offline NewSkoolScience from Outer Bongolia on 2008-06-16 16:25 [#02216395]
Points: 457 Status: Lurker

rev, if you find it that would be sweet. The Trainer album
was supposed to be 3 CDs, but Warp couldn't get the rights
to the early Rising High stuff? Shame, would be good to
hear that.

offline WhiteMtJubilee from Grasmere (United States) on 2008-06-16 18:38 [#02216408]

Parasight = Heaven.

and, yes, the 3xcd trainer would have been great. All of
the parasight ep plus 2 more tracks i think. unreleased
balil lp/ep would be soooooooooo nice to hear.

offline NewSkoolScience from Outer Bongolia on 2008-06-17 09:06 [#02216460]
Points: 457 Status: Lurker

Yeah, Parasight is ace. That AI2 album Warp had out back in
the day (was it '93?), man I played that one to death.

Does anyone have the early Balil EPs in digital form, or
know these are available online from anywhere these days?
I'd give me right arm for them, and maybe my left too if
they were decent flac recordings.

that's really cool but most of the rest of Bytes just never
did that much for me. and you all know how big a Black Dog
fan i am. i probably did most of the anal The Black Dog
profile edits on Discogs.

i fucking chased the postchick down to get my Age of Slack
EP cause she'd left me a brown slip on a Friday and i was
not going through the whole fucking weekend knowing that
thing was sitting in an empty locked post room in my town.

about that balil track that was only released on some
obscure cassette, it looks some cats got hold of the
original dat and made a rip:

HAPPY X-MAS!

This looks familiar :x

Alright Plaidboys, I think you are starting to see a
resurfacing in public adoration for these old tracks that
you have done. Perhaps it's time for a new EP/LP worth of
material with that dusted off Analogue Gear. Please. :[

Island Praise/Paradise

And if you haven't heard "Host" yet from their Heaven's Door
OST, do check that out as well. It may not be a whole EP/LP
worth of material, but it's good to know that they will on
occasion channel their early 90s work.
