Ofcourse it's not. I mean, maybe your stupid government
might allow something like that. Mine wont.

Obama would support net neutrality.

I think bandwidth caps are the way to go, personally- not
streamlining subscriptions through commercial sites. I mean
the ISPs do have their rights as well. But if they did start
piping their service through commercial sites only, The free
market would soon create a new ISP that once again gives
full access- that's where the demand is.

You know, these dongs make an impassioned plea for a free
internet and what do they cite as examples? What must be
preserved at all costs? Digg, 4chan and somethingawful, the
three openest runningest sores on the intnerent. Please sir,
save my penis, it has all these valuable precancerous
ulcers. Oh what ever will become of my penile chancres.

My post last night was a bit hasty. There are many, many
reasons why this just isn't possible.

For example:
The government wont allow it not only because it's not in
the interest of the internet users or unethical, but also
because a huge part of the economy is dependant on this
place an are generating profits because of it. I'm not just
talking e-commerce. I'm talking B2B communication on an
enormous scale.

Another problem like Wolfslice mentioned is you'll need
every ISP on board to make it work. Which is simply
impossible. For example, in Belgium you can start your own
ISP and rent the lines of the cable company (which is
partially state property) and set your own bandwith limits,
prices and stuff like that. The internet is a system anyone
can plug into and it's protocols are developed to allow free
exchange of communication.

It would make up for a great story. While China's internet
is being plagued by her government, the Western world's
internet becomes the victim of capitalism.

If they didn't want us to have the access we wouldn't have
been given it in the first place, as is the case in some
other countries where access to certain areas of the web is
prohibited to users.

However, I do believe that the Internet will develop over
time and become a lot less user-friendly. I feel that we
should enjoy file sharing while we can because they will try
and find a way to put a stop to it and will probably succeed
on the premise that it's illegal - as indeed it is.

I'd like to read arguments for this... They'd have to deny
that the internet is a public “area,” something which
isn't altogether easy to do even though all current access
to it comes through private actors. I would imagine, at
least here in Norway, that something like customary law
would come into play; if you've walked on a trail every day,
or at least frequently, over a period of time, if someone
then buys the land the trail passes through, it's not
entirely unproblematic for them to block off the trail.
Usually, the presence of an actual marked trail is enough.

I'd also like to see how they avoid the obvious comparison
with censorship in different other countries (China, for
instance), something “we” westerners criticise at every
turn. Is it ok if it is for profit? Or is it only bad if it
is a government because private actors somehow differ from
governments (in a free market system, it is not actually
clear that they would)?

bandwidth caps are garbage.

fucking garbage.

if i'm downloading a file from CA or South-East-Asia ... i'm
traversing more backbones, routers, carriers, etc ... than
if I download the same file from my neighbor on the same
switch/node.

yet i'll still be "charged" the same amount of bandwidth?

fuck that. the price i pay for my INET includes money for
future (and current) infrastructure upgrades. it's at&t's
fault they are not rolling out fiber
(one-time-infrastructure install) like verizon ... and
reaping the monies off of the existing copper infra.

ISPs say they can't handle the bandwidth? what the fuck are
you doing with all of the profits. that's the whole point,
you take part of your income to support future
infrastructure.

the price for upgrades gets passed on to the customer,
anyways....

oh, and by the way folks...once (if) this shit happens,
there is NO going back.

i think it's hard for anyone not involved in the tech-sector
to fully understand this.

and i'm not entirely sure how some of you can be so
optimistic saying "it will never happen"

i'm fairly certain those people don't understand (in
depth)how the infrastructure works, and what the problems
the carriers are (or may be) facing.

and, the extra profits!

think of all the profits!!!

those who are for it are those who feel they are being
cheated from it. but those being cheated are the wealthy.
wealth is power

from this deduction i predict that it will happen regardless

matter how many of those minorities are against it. . . :F

i think it will happen.

I'd lose my job and future if this would happen, I think I
know what I'm talking about.

America owns ICANN yes. But that's about it, if ICANN would
fuck up, a replacement could be up and running in days.

It's also just impossible to control. You could limit
protocols, portranges, the DNS-system and you'll still
create immense holes because any form of communication
between machines can be (ab)used. Controlling the flow of
information between 2 connected machines is simply
impossible.

Furthermore: there are only bigger profits for a small group
of big company's. The government won't become richer because
internet activity and thus income will simply drop. The
taxable income will be a lot smaller. So I'm not really
seeing an advantage for any government at all.

like ego said..

and on top of that, if someone would try to limit the entire
internet like this, and even succeded, a new internet would
arise, made by enthusiasts and the like, or they would have
to make communications between computers illegal outside of
this controlled internet.
furthermore, a whole shitload of the infrastructure of
economics is held together by the internet, they would have
to change a whole lot to sell shit like this.

in other words, i can say with 1110% safety that its bs

when the internet started to gain momentum with real people,
all the big names where pushing portals and enclaved
communities, eg AOL, LineOne, Compuserve. they were
eventually forced to open up once people realised they were
shit.

what is far more likely is localised broadband connections
grinding to a halt because the local connections can't
support bandwith. see here LAZY_TITLE

God, is everything privatised over there?

Such things are a matter for the police or the special
police forces (probably FBI), not the ISPs. First of all,
it's a public service and a public responsibility to warn
people if they are about to enter a site with child
pornography. Second, child pornography is a criminal
matter.

“No, damn you, it's my property, but I'm not responsible
for a single thing on it! Plus, I can charge people money
for their child pornography! KA-CHING, eh?!! EH!?”
