i will be working in scotland from july 8th till the end of august. i guess that i'll have a bit of free time for partying/sightseeing, probably i won't even stay in one place and go around the country. could you recommend me any nice clubs, gigs, sights and other interesting things to watch there ? i guess i can find a lot with google but i would rather want to have some "insider" info. also - could you recommend me any stores with music-gear there ? i guess that as i'm there i'll be buying some stuff right there. |

Probably because I came to Scotland an innocent and was immediately bullied for being English, which lasted for the first 5 years of my school-life. And outwith school I've heard numerous Scottish people railing (quite ignorantly) against "THE ENGLISH", something I've had to put up with for 20 years (I remember people from my school coming out of watching that piece of shit film Braveheart saying they wanted to beat up English people). Also they have "Flower Of Scotland" as their national anthem, a centuries-old anti-English song. In summary, Scotland as a whole seems mired in the past and have a huge chip on their shoulder, an inferiority complex as a nation, and are quite dour (Andy Murray, anyone?) and negative in their outlook. These are just some observations from having to live here 20 years. My mum has more or less the same opinion and she was born in Edinburgh to a Scottish mother (they moved to London when my mum was five), and has witnessed similar ignorant anti-English sentiments. Also: Settler Watch, a vile little group in the northern Scottish countryside who made the lives of several English families a misery for the terrible crime of moving there. |

glasgow or edinburgh as it will be most easy for me to find some work there. i'm taking a few friends with me so we aren't sure yet. but one of those two. |

i got you a friggin book: ah ok. well, i could go on for days about good places in edinburgh do let me leave that for last. Good stuff to check out around the country: Isle of Skye is probably one of the coolest places ever, i recommend spending two or three days there. Orkney Islands have this really cool archaeological site called Skara Brae which even if you're not into archaeology is awesome. Orkney is just kind of cool and bizarre in and of itself 2:37 Stirling is worth a day trip, it's got a sweet castle and some other cool old stuff 2:38 Glasgow is amazing for shows, alllll the good bands and such come through there so it's worth checking out what's going down there at the time. I don't know specific names so much, but The Arches has some good shows, plus it's all an old subway station so it's really cool on the inside 2:39 there's really good day hiking in Fife which is within train distance of Edinburgh. The Fife Coastal Path is really nice. Also great hiking around Perth in the county, like Dunkeld and Birnam 2:39 Also, around Glasgow, Loch Lomond is realllllly pretty 2:40 there's highland bus tours that go for two to seven days depending on what you want to do and those are awesome if you can't rent a car 2:43 and Edinburgh. Things to see: Edinburgh Castle, take a ghost tour of Greyfriars Cemetery (kitschy but fun, it's called City of the Dead Tour), climb Arthur's Seat, Scottish National Museum and the Royal Muesum (right next to each other and both free), wandering around the main campus of Edinburgh Uni at Bristo Square (McEwan Hall and Teviot Student Union are cool and old looking, as are the law buildings at Chambers Street and South Bridge) |

yeah ! thanks for that. although i don't know about staying in one place for more than a day so i hope that just a quick-trip will solve it too :> as i said i would want to earn some money too so i don't know how much free time i get. again thanks for the awesome list will check those sites. as for music gear - i checked soundcontrol.co.uk ? any good ? the prices seem fair and they have most od the stuff i would want to buy. |

What I find hilarious is the amount of moaning I've heard about "The English" stereotyping them... yet so many adverts for Scottish products feature the very stereotypes which they rail against. Or go to a sports event and see the amount of fans wearing those ridiculous tartan berets with the fake ginger hair. CLUE: If you want to shed your stereotype, don't perpetuate it and then complain that you're being stereotyped. |

scotland's lovely. Best thing in edinburgh is the 1st week of the festival, you can get into loads of comedy shows or £5 a night to see 3 comics as they have trial shows to test their material before the festival really gets underway. Some of the unknown comics are loads better than big names. you get to rub shoulders with stewart lee and the like or if you're like me punt and dennis. The highlands are breathtaking. Edinburgh is a beautiful city to visit (modern art gallery is good-bacon was on last i was there), water of leith is a nice walk out to it. glasgow is scuzzier and more lively. belfast=glasgow, edinburgh=dublin (but no as boring as either=]). Careful with sound control, they're in administration atm. /me end directionless rant |

scotland is awesome. saw hudson mohawke, bought some stuff, earned some money and bought a pc in which i stuffed hard drives that we got for free from old servers we recycled which immediately broke down killing my entire musical career. i broke up with my girlfriend and got fat and had to throw away all of the trousers i bought in tk-max for very cheap. oh and i think i've gone full on racist after the trip. loch ness sucked cocks. what a waste of time. |

horrible. anything that looked humane was either russian or polish. fat from contraception pills, stuffed into two sizes two small jeans and adidas, with frilly makeup. although there was one very pretty lady at tk-max at the counter who i totally fell in love with although this forced me into going there 3 times daily everytime grabbing a pair of socks. or less. |

i was in edinburgh at the festival idd. it was absolutely amazing. i saw some fantastic performances. i can totally recommend this for anyone going. as for the fannys: i'm curious if one myth is true as i didn't have the guts to try. the best way to get a scottish girl at a bar is supposedly to take some nearly emptied drinks and pour everything into one glass and then approach something fuckable and serve it to her. in my case there wasn't anything remotely fuckable. my head is to strong for that wattered down scot beer. |

You get that everywhere in the UK. Now Ireland have been "free" of England for a while, they bleat about how the root of all their problems is Germany (despite the fact the only reason they had an artificial boom was EU-cash, but that's by the by). Rural Wales is the same, they seem to genuinely believe that their lot would be better if England didn't exist. I'm a taff, but fuck me if we wouldn't be screwed were it not for England. Back to Sadist's question, I used to work in Scotland quite regularly and Edinburgh and Glasgow are great. Glasgow is nowhere near as rough as people make out. You get the odd psychopath, just like anywhere, but most of them just have a bark worse than their bite when they get noisy. On the whole I find them to be very hospitable and intelligent people. |
