Autechre drawings

A while ago, I experimented with the idea of listening to
music, and making marks on a paper according to the
sounds/beats I hear. To see what I mean, go to my
blogspot page for the drawings I did with "Iera", and
"the Trees". From there you can look at all of my other
artwork on the site.

You scribbled on paper.

By that I mean they are hardly drawings.

I've got an idea...wipe your arse while listening to
autechre and post the resultant smears on the internet. You
could create a whole sideline artistic movement.

Sorry, I am in a bit of a bad mood.
For all I know you might only have stumps for hands and had
to make the drawings by holding the pencil/pen in your
mouth, in which case they would still be shit. In fact the
only way I would consider these impressive was if you were
Steven Hawking.

call them scribbles then, they're not supposed to be
masterpieces. It was just something to do with IDM.

I've looked at your other drawing as I realised I might have
been a bit quick in judging your general artistic ability. I
wasn't.

well, it really looks a bit stupid... maybe if you use
different colors and then focusing on one sound/movement per
color, youd get a more interesting/beautiful result...

Follow these instructions for success with ae inspired
artwork:

Figure out how to draw straight lines.
Connect those lines in a "box" shape.
Use a crayon or felt tip pen to colour it in (gay blue,
black or white)

If you follow these instructions properly you might just get
a job with the designers republic.

Don't feel bad, I was just artificially boosting mine for 30
seconds.
Just do whatever you enjoy and fuck everybody elses
opinion.

Who doesn't enjoy a scribble every so often, plus I would
rather look at your scribbles than read one of cx's rambling
autechre inspired trips into his brain.

The EP7 artwork might seem like they farted into an
etch-a-sketch at first glance, but there is some nice
composition there under the surface. It is deceptively
simple.

I don't think stuff like what you are trying to do is
without merit. The very top one seems like the best. I
like the little short lines mixed in with the long darker
ones, it gives it a bit more movement and complexity than
the others. I can hear how you might get that out of iera
or untilted in general, though, hearing it visually.

this is great.

the majority of people will always expect something 'pretty'
to look at when presented with drawings which in this case
is rather ironic, because if we were to consider autechre's
music as art, untilted really is some of the most uninspired
rubbish you can get your hands on these days.

let us know when you repeat the experiment listening to
anvil vapre, confield or even draft 7.30.

offline pulseclock from Downtown 81 on 2008-05-18 16:42 [#02207987]

i do admit i actually used to do this alot and thought it
was amazing, its more like a diary of your own ancient
feelings, you should draw more things to music, maybe stick
to more form and concentrate one singular aspects rather
than a whole piece, like illustrations or somehting

i didn't think they actually did it on an etch-a-sketch i
knew it was vectors of some sort. I was just illustrating
my point (NPI).

Wow, I just got back and saw all these wonderful comments.
Seems like a bunch of people here got what I was trying to
do. At the time I did this, I was really getting into
Untilted for the first time. It was just a one-time thing,
although it might be a bit easier to do it for Draft 7.30.

Nope, it isn't. It was drawn with some PCB CAD software. It
may look generative, but it isn't. Goes to show what Ae are
like :P

I like how they all (especially the first one) look like
math formulas gone obsessive. Fitting for the tunes.

My first bong session was to Squarepusher's Hard Normal
Daddy, documented here

Your drawings are quite rad, Ead. cool blarg

say WHAT?

either way, i like the art, the first one has depth because
of as glasse said the darker/lighter lines, and the gradient
gray color of the background.

If this wasn't done to any music, and someone just posted
these scribbles, would you all still be saying how beautiful
and amazing they were? Or is it purely down to the fact that
they've been done whilst listening to autechre? I can't help
but think that the final product really has much at all do
to with you saying how great you think they are
