Food rationing

coming to a country near you?

http://nysun.com/news/food-rationing-confronts-breadbas...

“Where’s the rice?” an engineer from Palo Alto,
Calif., Yajun Liu, said. “You should be able to buy
something like rice. This is ridiculous.”

I find people's sense of entitlement to be absolutely
hilarious. "You should be able to..." "ridiculous"-- in
the magical land of pretend. It's like people who get all
huffy when they accuse oil companies of 'price gouging'.
Nobody forces you to pay exhorbitant prices. It's called
demand and when there's not enough of it to go around, those
who can express the most demand get it and the rest don't.

it's fine to laugh at some dumb american engineer
complaining when he has plenty to eat and the shortage is a
self-fulfilling prophesy in his locale, but is the idea of
being entitled to food on its own really hilarious?

what gets me is these private companies buying up food and
hoarding it waiting for prices to go even higher.

well especially considering that a huge part of the reason
that food prices are climbing is corn ethanol production. i
found out yesterday that you can feed a person for a year
with the amount of corn it takes to produce one tank of
ethanol!

i feel bad asking farmers to be the only ones to make the
sacrifice, but is it acceptable for them to sell their corn
at a higher price for ethanol production or should they have
to sell it at a lower price for the third world to eat from
like they used to? the environmental degradation that
ethanol production causes makes this a market failure
anyway. should we really be using up some of the most
fertile soil in the world to fill up our gas tanks? is that
a legitimate demand? i really don't think so.

Do you have high fructose corn syrup in EVRYTHING in
Europe?

You can not get a loaf of bread or cracker or anything
without high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients.

Yeah, so I do believe the oil companies are price gouging
and that whole China and India expanding is a load of shit.
Like it all happened in the last 5 years? Bush is an oil man
and he has a "special relationship" with the Saudi
government. Anyway, I don't think its purely supply and
demand. I think there are some greedy people pushing
buttons. Maybe they are afraid of an alternative coming
along soon to put them out of business

Also, the gas stations in America are price fixing. Why are
they all the same exact price within a very small margin? No
matter how much inventory they have?

also, something doesn't sit right in me thinking of all
these poor third world people eating corn. Like how American
Indians genetically can only drink 2 beers and they are
sloppy drunk. Corn is just not in the diet of many people.
They need help at the local level to provide for themselves
by cultivating their native cuisine, but I guess dropping
crates of corn makes of feel better. The cycle of energy
should be self fulfilling. If we can power our lives with
something nondestructive to the environment and ourselves
than I think its a very good answer. I don't know what the
best alternative energy will be though. The corn farmers
have a big lobby in Washington. I guess from replacing sugar
in our foods with their bastardized cheaper replacement in
order to avoid sending money into South America for sugar
cane

what i mean is for most of human history most people have
lived short and brutal lives. "but is the idea of being
entitled to food on its own really hilarious?" but it does
nothing unless it can actually tell you how to keep
everybody fed. it's actually a good idea. so no, i just
find comments like hers pretty frivolous. people are
starving to death, so she could at least come up with some
'reason' why she deserves food and they don't. 'ridiculous'

well we could feed everybody but that would entail some kind
of sacrifice, which nobody is probably willing to make for
the time being. maybe part of that is not driving, maybe
part of it is not eating meat, maybe part is not buying 20
goddamn bags of rice for all of your closest friends.

Oh right, I forget, craven, scavenging human beings,
defecating and climbing on top of those less able, well
done.

why is it ridiculous that she should have to substitute
something instead of rice when other people are starving.
it's like sometimes you can't have seasonal foods 12 months
of the year if fresh produce has to be shipped on average
1500+ miles. she's not starving. she should be thankful
that she isn't. i mean sure she was interviewed for a
newspaper, couldn't she have a little more tact?

she doesnt know any better but who doesnt? or its the
newspaper putting words into her mouth? or shes is dumb? i
dont get you point, i know you well enough to at least
wonder there is a hidden agenda, and i'd love to know what
it is

it's an example of the kind of rationale many people have,
it's an example of the kind of mentality prevalent in
politics. it shows hypocracy and a lack of awareness about
the global picture. other than that it's just a small
anecdote which isn't remarkable by itself. i think people
need to think: does some software engineer who is designing
the latest Apple iShit in palo alto deserve a bag of rice
anymore than anyone else and how could things be different
and so on.

We could easily keep up with demand if we planted corn on
the golf courses of California alone.
