giving up smoking is so difficult

i'm on my third day without and it's all i can think about.
i really hope the cravings are less tomorrow. i can't tell
you the number of times i've nearly gone and bought some
today. it's not even a dead cert i'll get through today
without one. i'm really fucking determined to beat this
addiction though. as much as i love smoking, it has to stop.

i find nibbling like a mouse on peanuts, raisins and corn
flakes is a good way to occupy yourself

i gave up...its not that hard if you can switch your
thoughts as soon as the wave (they come in waves) hits .,get
off it straight away dont drool and think of the shop
..think of something eles (do push ups- scream your head
off) ..then after a few moments the craving goes
away.....keep doing this practice practice makes healthy and
no horrific suffocating death

how much did you smoke a day?

Keep at it. You may have some rough patches in the first
week, or weeks, but the cravings keep diminishing and
eventually you don't even think about it any more.

smoaking is dumb

I find changing my diet and my lip balm addiction much
harder than quitting smoking.

well done so far, most people struggle to get that far... i
gave up a 20-a-day habit at the end of last year. not an
easy task, but trust me, after day 3 its easy. keep your
mind occupied. make sure you don't have any negative
external factors annoying you, thus giving you an excuse to
give in. Just take it a day at a time i guess. it does get
easier with time, honest!.

also, don't smoke any drugs, whilst trying to stop. it won't
help with trying to distance yourself from the habit and
behaviour of inhale = reward

if you're not extremely irritable you're ahead of the game.
the first three days or so are the hardest, i think. you
have to keep reminding yourself of why you're quitting,
that'll help stop you from going to get more.

here's hoping you make it!

if you mean what i think you mean about waves; you're right.
you can only quit when you are ready to quit. not just
saying you're ready, but you actually have to be ready. if
you try any other time, you will fail. that sounds obvious
but ex-smokers will agree i'm sure.

i was smoking anything from 10 to 20 a day

going cold turkey is hard. i just randomly decided a few
days ago and here i am now. the last 2 days were a piece of
piss in comparison to today, which is odd.

i notice the waves definitely, and my own psycho analysis is
becoming routine. noticing the tyler durden type persona
which will suddenly come over me, 'fuck it', you know.
but yeah, i just keep reminding myself why i'm doing it and
how much i can benefit from stopping, because there is so
much more to life than sucking on a smouldering love stick.
i mean shit stick.
i feel if i can do this then i can do anything. this is
strength building. i'll be made out of fucking iron by the
time this is done with.

the most likely thing to seduce me back is depression. so
i'm going to keep happy and mostly keep women away.

another good idea to stop smoking is not talk about it and
not be around smokers.

the benifits to giving up are incredible. youll find things
about your body improving that you didnt realise were wrong
with you(does that make sense?) taste smell breathing
feeling even sight ..carry on with the good wok and youll
see/feel what im talking about.

many people say they dont wanna get old anyway and hope for
an early death

they don't realise that smoking doesn't kill straight away
...it makes you VERY ill for years and years till the end of
life. when the cancer or cardiovascular disease kicks in
..its a horrific death and suicide is sometimes a more
pleasurable option for many people ....they cant fit all
that on a fag box. .

just take a stand man! either you are a smoker or nonsmoker.
i'd say something like.. it doesnt really matter untill you
have kids, im not gonna stop smoking before that.. unless
something drastic happens.

as far as i can see it (probably a poor level of seeing
stuff and it being all misshapen by denial and such), if i
can shake the desire to smoke then i'm free from it! then i
can finally stop spending fucknows how much a week
i want to not want to smoke. or even better, i want smoking
to be something that has no control over me whatsoever.
obviously right now it has more control over me than i'd let
a policeman have but anyway we'll see what happens. i've
never properly done this before and i just want to see what
happens

You'll give up when you want to give up. I know that sounds
like an obvious thing to say - but the only time people
usually give up is when they are worried about their health,
although some people never are.

Go and read a bunch of shit about survival rates for long
term smokers - it ain't pretty. Sure, you could be the one
in 10,000 that DOESN'T get lung cancer but chances are you
will. If you don't there's plenty of other reasons not to
smoke, when your arteries are all furred up and your immune
system is fucked, every disease going has a chance to get in
there and take advantage. In fact, he diseases are already
there waiting, it's just whether you want to give them an
opportunity to run riot one day or not.

So yeah, carry on or don't. But live in the real world,
because one day it's pretty much are certainty that if you
don't give up it's going to send you to an early grave.

couldnt agree more. i have a relative who smoked pretty much
all her life and has tried everything to quit, patches, cold
turkey, hypnotherapy, nicotine inhalers, pills, potions,
lotions, self help guides, nicotine gum. she has been trying
to quit for easily over 10 years, yet suddenly stopped last
year because she felt like if she had another cigarette she
was going to die.

"if i can shake the desire to smoke then i'm free from
it!
"

I don't think you'll ever be able to "shake the desire." Not
with what you've been told about nicotine "addiction."

You'll just have to live with actively deciding not to smoke
every time you feel the urge.

It's the same logic that goes into alcoholics always calling
themselves alcoholics (or "recovering alcoholic") even
though it's been ten years since their last drink.

Realising it now and resigning to it makes it easier.

Good job keeping it up until now, though! Keep going!

Not necessarily true with smoking, it's a different sort of
habit drinking. Alcohol tastes nice. If you stop drinking
for 5 years when you have a vodka and tonic it's still
pleasurable, but if you haven't smoked for 5 years a
cigarette tastes like shit.

i'm not sure how hard you're trying to rationalize it, my
drive to stop smoking was music, i counted the money i used
to spend monthly on cigs and i tried to think how much music
i could buy for such amount. it kinda helped. i haven't been
smoking for about 4 years now
