I know this subject is nothing new, but i have been giving it some thought recently, i just wondered how others feel, because i know there are some upcomming artists on here, who share these boards.
As most of you know, it's affordable or rather easy to get hold of professional audio software (by certain methods) and you don't need a modern computer to make music. in every city/town there are people writing tracks in small studios and low budget setups in cluttered bedrooms.
From genre to genre, times are changing, music evolves and the market is full of these new artists releasing music. A wonderful thing, however I got to thinking, how hard is it to become an astablished elecrtonic artist in these times? in an oversaturaed media market, is anything short of genius ignored?
what chance do you have to actualy be sucessful in this business? or maybe for you making profits is not so important, perhaps you just enjoy writing music as a hobby. let me know your opinions. anyone....

I think it is a positive situation as it helps raise the standards.

millions of channels all over the net ...its not like there is just 5 terrestrial channels these days. and yeh most filled with home made stuff youtube for example. before we know it there will be new advancments in music creation where anyone can form their own song in real time.depending on mood and where that person wants to take their mood next....and it will be very personalised of course. this cannot be to far away... y know so easy your nan can use it......like any technology it will take a while to advance to a high standard but .. can't be to far away....so no need for professional composers/artists. cause people prefer their own lower standard semi automated compositions. ....(vocal might be hard tho haha hows microsoft 'sam' getting on?)
so even more hard to get wide recognition.n cash.
do art cause you enjoy it ....never expect to get paid or get famous ...just do it cause its fun...thats the way i alway thought ...never crossed my mind ,money n fame.. im sure you feel that way too.
just my 5p worth
nite.

totally agree with you, the firemen, police and doctors deserve the money, the artists often feel important, but it is not truth.

The information age is getting more and more sophisticated making information like music much less valuable.

True, but information can be easily copied. To make money with music you basically need to ask for donations and rely on the honor system (like cylob's last release apparently, ha ha). Or include interesting artwork/etc that has nothing to do with the actual music (which can also be copied as jpegs, etc)

as long as you have something to say with what you do i don't think you should be affraid whether you can live of it or not. probably wouldn't mean you'd drive around in a ferrari but you'd be able to pay rent i suppose.

i think the only way to live from electronic music is collaborating with the medias (tv, ads, cinema...), as electronic music is cheap and sounds great

ive been recently making music for tv news and promotional video for museum... its not that creative, but you can still make nice music within the limitations... and they pay pretty good (but fucking late)!
