MUSIC! When someone asks....

"what kind of music do you like"

How do you answer it? I'm really talking from a casual
perspective, aka a workmate or someone you know but aren't
particularly close to. Or possibly even a complete stranger.
I just cringe every time it is asked, simply because I know
i'll end up sounding like a complete twat whatever I say.

For example, I like Italo Disco. I told this to a workmate
(girl) and she automatically thought of the usual pop-disco
boogie nights kind of stuff. She probably also thought I was
gay as a result.

Another workmate is into old skool style stuff, so we can
relate on that. But as thats all we tend to discuss, he
thinks that is literally all I listen to. He even asked me
"do you not like any music after the early 90s then" ....
what?

I've also lost count of the times I said I liked Electro,
only for them to namecheck people like Fedde Le Grand or
Eric Prydz in an attempt to relate. Jesus Christ.

Techno is obviously problematic as well, as most ignorant
types assume any music made on computers is Techno. So I
tend to avoid that.

House is generally quite safe, even though most people
assume that if you listen to house, you like CLUBLAND
3984904 or IBIZA CLASIXXX VOL 20983 or whatever. But at
least you don't tend to get funny looks.

I wouldn't even attempt to explain IDM.

So come on, how on earth do you answer this question for
semi-ignorant types who you don't want to be rude to? Saying
you like "good music" is also not an acceptable reply :D

I do listen to everything so I don't care.

Oh and i'm trying my hardest not to sound like a
patronising, pretentious idiot here. People can listen to
what the hell they want, which is what makes things
interesting afterall. I'm just talking from a personal
perspective.

i can't answer it directly, usualy i'll get out of having to
do it by making the other person name off a few artists they
like and i just take it from there, providing i know what
they're on about.

and you don't really have to proof to semi-ignorants that
your music taste is superior, it will be obvious along the
road.

i say techno and then don't elaborate...if i try to get
detailed i will sound like a twat, plus i don't really care
if anybody knows what i listen to anyway so there's really
no reason to further explain, unless i have a feeling we
like the same things which has happened like...maybe once.

heh
is the easiest way to answer,
even if most people think i listen to dance/techno music,
and even if i listen other things non strictly electronic...

i've had similar cringe inducing experiences by
experimenting with a variety of things such as 'alternative
dance' 'weird shit' and 'shit'. i've given up on that
approach.

now, i usually say i'm not interested in mainstream music,
theres nothing wrong with it (diplomatic lie) but it doesnt
interest me. anything more specific is usually lost.

The Aphex twins? they're a band, right?

i was once told by a girl i was seeing to 'stop listening to
this boring shit (godspeed you! black emperor) and listen to
some real rock music like nickelback' yikes.

So you never listen to non-electronic music?

I dunno, you can say "i listen to everything", but that
gives the impression to many people that you don't really
know much about music, hence the ambiguous answer.

It seems that for the masses, you have to like one
particular form of music for some reason. These are often
the biggest music snobs too.

I know that in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really
matter anyway.. but the question is bound to get asked at
least once if you're around someone for any given amount of
time and no matter how many times it is asked, I can't help
but feel like an idiot afterwards, even though its the other
person who is ignorant.

i had to pick up a co-worker once and was playing untilted
in the car but it was turned down to be polite. his idea of
good times is the doobie bros.

he was a trooper. he turned it way up and the look of
bewilderment on his face was by far the best awkward musical
moment ever. better than when my mom broke my slayer tape.

'i dont like music'

what in some ways is kind of true...

There was an interview with Matmos where one of the guys was
explaining a situation where he had a similar problem.
Someone asked him what kind of music do you do. His answer
was something like ..It's kind of electronic, kind of
techno, using found sounds and sampling them .. and the guy
says .. oh like Stomp and The Blue Man Group. He went on
about how frustrating it was to get that kind of response.

I might do it like this:

person: So, what kind of music do you like?
me: Well, most of the stuff I like is underground on smaller
independant labels. A lot of it is electronic but some of
it is rock and various blends thereof.
person: so is it like dance music?
me: Some of the styles are based on club music, there is
some techno, some hip-hop, some drum n bass in there, but
overall the electronic stuff I like is more about listening
than dancing.
person: so if all I ever heard was what is on the radio who
would you compare it to?
me: well have you heard of Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails?
person: of course
me: Well you know how they have some synthesizers and
electronic sounding stuff in their songs?
person: yea its cool
me: well imagine if the music was kind of focused way more
on just that, without much vocals, guitar etc. If you
picture something in between that and what you know of dance
music you are on the right track.
person: that sounds awesome I'll get some aphex acid right
away.

your artificial creation would not pass the Turing test; the
reaction to such a clarification would be 'huh?' instead of
'I'll get some aphex acid right away'... unless the said
person is looking for a quick fuck and will do anything you
say just to pleas you, including the most endearing
positions of kama sutra.

Nobody really asks me the question that much really. I find
it depends on the person asking the question really.
Sometimes i can go on for ages about what I like or if it
someone who wouldn't know I just tell them I can find things
i like in any field of music.

advantages of electronic musci, and explaining that it's not
about scooter or shit dancemusic and stuff and crud. but
i've given it up. i don't discuss music any more.

Most of the time I'm the one who askes what kind of music
someone listen to. When they ask me my answer depends on
what the other likes. If I see some sort of connection I'll
explain and try to find comparissons.
If there isn't any connection at all I only tell I like
electronic music. Depending on the feedback I'll try to
explain what it is but I try to avoid it because it's very
difficult to explain a layman how electronic music sounds.

Usually, I say "good music".
They say "What is good music?"
I reply "Music I like"
They say "Like what?"
At this point, visualise a record shop with all those little
dividers separating the vinyl into all those genres and
start to list them. Just list as many different genres as
you can where you've heard at least 1 decent song. Never
mention any bands or artists.

That's my technique. (It's not very effective usually)

i was asked this at work by this dude that's into stuff like
weezer, the strokes, stuff like that (he wears their concert
tees all the time)... i just told him "the main thing i
listen to is experimental electronic music like autechre and
aphex twin (he nods his head as if he knows what i'm talking
about but he really didn't)!" i then continued to mention
stuff like underground hip hop, jazz, reggae, and a few
(very few) rock bands... he's cool though... i tried to keep
it from sounding like i didn't like anything else... because
i don't want to come out like that anymore!

I usually just say, that i "listen to a lot of different
stuff, except gospel". It's honestly the only genre i've
never been able to get any enjoyment out of. I'm a big fan
og Motown, soul, blues, bluegrass etc. but gospel never did
anything for me.
