Well, I don't consider myself THAT sensitive, but that film
was horrendous! I feel sick.

subject matter: horrendous
the movie itself: great

saw it in the theaters. The camerawork was intense on such a
large screen.

I can imagine. It was intense enough on my screen at home. I
am not sure if i could watch the film again. It is a great
film however.

Oh, the film was brilliantly shot and it was beautiful in
its own, I agree, but I just couldn't really handle the
first half too well.

i've got this rule. if i can't watch it again, it wasn't a
great film.

art can be 100% pure and unadulterated in any way, be it
beautiful or horrific but that doesn't make it great.

about Irreversible i can't really say cause i haven't seen
the thing.

Haven't seen it, and I don't think I will. It's the film
with the 15 min rape-scene, right? A girl I know actually
invited a guy to this film on their first date! She had no
clue what it was about. She just knew it was a french movie
that had a lots of good reviews, and what can be better on a
first date, right?

normally i apply the same rule, but this movie is an
exception.

i could watch it again, but i don't really feel the need for
it.

It wasn't great because it was horrific. It was great
because of the cinematography, the acting and the message it
delivered.

It is a good film. The camerawork is fantastic (the scene in
rectum in particular.... incredibly disorientating, but it
totally fits the mood of that scene), the soundtrack is
really good, and it doesn't hold back on the issues it
addresses. The bittersweet "ending/beginning" was also
cool.

The ultraviolence is what sticks in most peoples mind for
obvious reasons, but theres more to the film than that.

Good film, albeit a bit too soft. Could have done with a
more detailed and expanded rape scene. Also there should
have been more death scenes like the one in the 'rectum'.
All in all it left me in a cheerful mood.

yes brisk! yes! gaspar noe does something out of the
ordinary, you should mentally prepare yourself for
irreversible by seeing his first feature length I Stand
Alone - then you will really understand what kind of film
making it is. a film that can provoke heavy feelings and
frighten beyond the shock-suspense is in my eyes worth
giving a shot. fact is, irreversible is incredibly well
made, allthought not suitable for everyone.

the first 15 minutes of the film uses a frequencial
distortion which appearantly induces nausea and discomfort,
interesting little side note.

as for the violence, its all camera work and effects. the
rape scene caused some serious discomfort and the next few
times i watched the movie, i skipped that part. not because
its something im directly afraid of watching, but because
the "shock" effect is gone now and now its just moderate
discomfort.

also, bellucci is fucking hot!

Irreversible and Requiem for a dream are 2 of the shittiest
films i've ever seen, utterly lazy poncical wanktoss.. I put
the two together as both seem to attract people i like.

I used to quite fancy Belluci when she was a model way back
when, can't stand her anymore though. I liked her cocksucker
of a husband in La Haine but it stops there.

requiem for a dream is fucking awful but irreversible wasn't
that bad, i just don't think it's anywhere near as "deep" as
everyone makes out. like, look past all that rapey fire
extinguisher biz, man, it's a comment on like, relationships
and emotion and human nature and stuff... no, it's just a
gripping but very ugly story with a lot of gimmicky
camerawork. but that's alright, i guess. wouldn't be arsed
to see it again though...

offline melack from barcielwave on 2007-12-17 17:01 [#02155307]

requiem for a dream is an empty film, i think,
lots of noise (and the fucking music all the time),
and spectacular images (sex drugs and degeneration)
but a poor history inside... imo

i loved it the first time i watched it,
but on the second time,
i found it a bit superficial

some orginal images and editing, tho

yes

Besides, I really like Gaspar Noé because he's so crass
while trying to be profound. This might sound bad but it
makes for some unique films.

i don't like many of its preachy aspects, but it's good
theater, with some very powerful scenes and a wonderful
performance by Mrs. Burstyn. In general, I don't judge a
film on any other ground than aesthetics. Thus, I can
appreciate Leni Riefenstahl's work, for example. Didn't
particularly like irreversible though.

*sigh*
No i hate movies etc..

you were joking right, nobbler?

In irreversible i did find the rectum scene a tad cringe
worthy but the most horrrendous bit for me was not the rape
but watching that cocking shitwank of a couple cack about on
the bed for 15 minutes.
I've heard people praise Irreversible without even
realising that it wasn't the tenia that Dupontel bashes with
the extinguisher..

I don't detest Noé though, unlike Darren Aronosfky who is
top rubbish.

It's been a few years, but from memory:

near the beginning of the film, the Rectum is a gay S&M
club, in which two men (the boyfriend and
ex-boyfriend/husband?) of bellucci are told her rapist is
at. They walk around the labyrinth of the club looking for
her rapist. They eventually find a guy they think is the
rapist, confront him and from memory he tries to rape one of
them, one of their arms is broken, then his friend bashes
the alleged rapist in the head with the bottom of a fire
extinguisher multiple times until his head is essentially
red goo. End scene.

the Sam Raimi close up quick edit transitions is what
inevitably killed it for me, not that it wasn't a
combination of things including characters i couldn't have
given a fuck less about.

transitions like that have done so much better in comedies
or Guy Ritchie movies.

Requiem for a Dream is great. i've never felt so assaulted
by a film. it was too good in that respect i think. I'll
probably never watch it again because of it.

and Ellen Bursten should have won that oscar, not julia
