The Dune film is pretty bad, mainly due to the brutal edit in the cutting room. It's pretty obvious they removed massive chunks from about half way onwards.
I've read all 6 of the original Dune books (I've not bothered with the rip off prequels done by other people). The books are a fantastic read. The only thing comparable with it is LOTR.
I would recommend anyone here to get the first book, Dune By Frank Herbert and read it. It may not be easy going, but it is brilliant. (There's an appendix with all the dune words, traditions, culture, planets, maps, etc)
If you make it through to book 5, Heretics of Dune (I think), then well done. Book 5 was probably the most enjoyable book I've ever read.
When I was a kid I had the Empire Strikes Back picture book, where they had stills from the film with captions and a small summary. Compared to Dune this was crap.
However, Carrie Fisher makes me go shwing!
Oh and in the film where they show the scale of the guild highliner, starwars just cannot compete with its deathstar imo.
Ultimately I think starwars is for children and Dune is for adults.

I love Lynch, but Dune is probably his shoddiest work. It just seems unfinished and poorly put together in places. I know it's not his fault, he was forced to make massive cuts on it by the studio.

Dune is unfortunately cut to shreds in the second half... but i still love it, and its still better than star wars, oh how i would love to see a proper directors extended cut! The sets and costumes in Dune are stunning and I don't think the look of it has dated as badly as star wars.
I love the intro with princess Irulan (sp?), she's beautiful too, can you believe its the same actress who's in Sideways.
And the book Dune is awesome, i'm hoping to get the next two books for christmas, how do these compare?

Probably not quite as good as the first book. They're still good, but perhaps not as good. Book 4 I found to pretty hard going, but book 5 is just great. I think you will enjoy them slightly less from 1-2-3, then 4 has too much padding with quasi religious mumbo jumbo (I guess it needs it to set the atmosphere) makes it quite poor compared to 1, then book 5 more than makes up for it. book 6 is quite good but you get the feeling there needs to be something after it to wrap it all up. I think he had plans but died before he could write a draft.
I think overall the original series is well worth reading, basically because books 1 and 5 are so amazing and the others a pretty good too.

There is no such thing as 'better' or 'the best' when it comes to art., its how a piece connects with a particular observer at a particular moment ..Thats like saying "today ,green is better than blue in the eyes of all people."
having said that, i'll say this.... "Star wars 'A new hope' is better than any other film in the entire galaxy in the eyes of all people. "

THEN it would have def. been better than Star wars

mm haven't read the books... star wars is a very successful and resonant film series, i think it managed to capture something of the spirit of the 70s and combine them with some old religious ideas... i like dune as a film, but it's a horrible editing jumble.

Both sets of films are well boring. But The Phantom Menace is so terrible that Dune wins by T.K.O.
I reaaaaaaaaaaaaalllly hope they re-edit / re-SFX Episodes I and II of Star Wars (get rid of Binks!) so they don't stink quite so much.

The original director was going to be Alejandro Jodorowsky but the project was then moved to Lynch and therefor the concepts from Jodo (Moebius and Giger) weren't used because they were two different projects.
Giger concepts for Dune were out of this world, I don't know how back then they could have made it work, if the movie was made in late 80's it would'va been the perfect time imo.
I like the style they went with so it's not a bother to me.

Did you know Ridley Scott was going to make Dune, but got pulled off to Blade Runner. It would have been a thing to marvel however we would have no Ridley 'Blade Runner'.

You do notice that for the first half the movie follows the book almost line for line, and then half way through starts skipping huge chunks.
Some of Paul's voice over thoughts are kinda bad. You just cannot adapt a book to a movie in such a literal way. In a book, showing the character's thoughts in print works just fine, but once it is in film you have to find more subtle ways of showing what he/she is thinking. The more non-verbal the better really.
