i don't have my records/cds near me so i'm just going by
memory.

1. the tuss - rushup edge
the only thing truly to excite me this year, electronic
musics-wise. love the fan vid with the skateboarders.

2. battles - mirrored
heartless, clinical, brutal (brutal live, at least). the
rock equivalent of autechre.

3. sunset rubdown - random spirit lover
opposite of battles, pure emotion in music form.

4. of montreal - hissing fauna, are you the
destroyer?

i picked up this album thinking it would be another
throwaway pop trinket like satanic panic, good for only a
few pleasant listens, but it turned out to be so much more.

5. blonde redhead - 23
very rich in atmosphere thanks to the over-the-top
production. catchy songs.

6. radiohead - in rainbows
radiohead for people who have grown out of radiohead.

7. feist - the reminder
voice conquers all.

8. m.i.a - kala
messy gooshness.

9. deerhunter - cryptograms
they have no actual, unifying style of their own, but they
have good taste in which bands and songs they appropriate.

10. interpol - our love to admire
completely trashy album that shouldn't be on any top ten
list. band members are total douchebags and their music
strives to be fleeting.

in no order

radiohead - in rainbows
surprisingly great. cd2 is still disappointing, but cd1 is
really good. reckoner is the track that sneaked up on me and
took me by the throat after a few listens.

pj harvey - white chalk
took a few listens, but has proved to be really great. has a
unique sonic expression to it, almost comatose.

sandro perri - tiny mirrors
totally fucking overlooked, it seems. which is a massive
shame, seeing as it's absolutely deserving of a top ranking
and whatever. brilliant songs and a sound that reminds me of
the 60s and the 00s melted together. at least get the track
'family tree' from it, bastards!

bad religion - new maps of hell
while the production is too loud/atrocious, bad religion
manage to create even more catchy, awesome hardcore punk
tracks. it's a fun, exciting album and never really drops
off. despite having ridiculously compressed sound it shines
brilliantly because of the songwriting. too many good picks
to mention.

björk - volta
if only for wanderlust! i wish dull flame would go back to
being electronic, but it's still nice. the album is pretty
'seaside' at times, with the fog horns or whatever those
are. it's less immediately catchy overall, but it feels like
a true 'album' and it unravels (HA!) more over several
listens.

weedeater - god luck and good speed
albini recording stoner metal? yeah, i guess. awesome,
energetic album that's loud without being obnoxious. this
genre gets a lot of samey shit, but this really is a great
listening experience throughout. especially wizard fight and
weed monkey. oh, and alone. a great break about halfway
through, nice move there.

the tuss - rushup edge
the only internet phenomenon ranking above youtube at the
moment. nice "album", although a few of the more "obvious"
tracks get a bit tiring after a short while. the more
rewarding ones seem more threatening at first. shiz ko e is
definitive.

bla bla... more later. out of words.

offline staz on 2007-12-15 13:40 [#02154660]
Points: 9844 Status: Regular

animal collective - strawberry jam
a hell of an album. so catchy, so right, so energetic! i
hadn't checked out any AC until i heard this, so it was a
really pleasant surprise. winter wonder land is a good
start, my fav+ track.

afx - scooter remixes
when i first heard about this, i thought it would be more
akin to his 2 remixes by afx style of tunes. turns out i was
completely right, as these are basically just those
two/three tracks mixed together at various lengths.
essential!

ted leo & the pharmacists - living with the living
hadn't really heard of ted leo either until this album, but
it was put out on touch & go so i thought i'd give it a
whirl. i'm happy i did, as it's super catchy, solid rock
music with little slack. well, a few tracks are pretty
dull/annoying, but that doesn't detract too much. i even
like 'unwanted things', which most people seemed to hate!

shellac - excellent italian greyhound
shellac is still fucking awesome. i think this album shows
that steve albini really should more involved in music as a
musician, we need another fucking rapeman album. stat. the
only weak point on this is 'genuine lulabelle', it drags on
for too long, and the sampling gets annoying. it could be a
nice 2-3 minuter, but it's just like listening to bad
avantgarde for most of the time.

marco polo - port authority
really, really good "oldschool" hiphop album. overlooked
too, tracks like 'war' and 'nostalgia' are fucking hits.

requests

- new jesus lizard album.
- new rapeman album.
- new plaid album that doesn't feel rushed/shit.
- new LFO album.
- new aphex album.
- new justin timberlake single produced by luke vibert.
- radiohead redo their fucking atrocious recording of 'up on
the ladder'.
- analord 12-15
- the beatles catalogue remasters (i hope they won't sound
shit)
- ice cube loses his mind and records something like his
first albums.
- that the new dr. dre album isn't shit.
- bob dylan gets his voice fixed.
- a new µ
