blackhole sun topic not doing so well; let's try this instead?
the US supreme court is about to consider (do brits know about this? sorry if so) affirmative action, which is essentially like: you have to let at least 25% minorities into your elite college. that, like, arguably, i could have gone to a better college if not because of this, but... after who knows how many years of arguing with myself, i'm finally like: actually, this is about right. just try and make things a bit more fair with no delusions that it'll solve everything
so now, the conservative-fundie majority is likely about to throw this out, at, ironically, a time when interest in college is at a record low due to, like, pandemic, trump, etc. and it's like: ugh. this is stupid. the white people losing their majority and lashing out
but then there's a flipside. like, when i hear "slavery reparations" it's like, alright, i support making things more fair, but get your hand out of my pocket? this is a cash grab; writing people a check will not fix the decades of psychological abuse by any means?
then i tune into NPR, which... just today, "...so he's a black vampire that can kill white racists but he can't change the system" and i shut it off.
or, an NPR podcast, "the auxiliary businesses that support the marijuana industry," and i'm thinking i'm going to hear, like, about companies that make empty vape carts or such. instead, it's a bunch of people like, "how can we get more black and brown people owning these" and they spent the first ten minutes jerking each other off, "thank you so much for your work," "oh no thank you" and saying absolutely. nothing. of. substance
and at a certain point maybe black lives matter did need an ego check. just kind of a bummer it has to be something that was actually a coherent policy

shit, right, the kanye west, "white lives matter" thing. i think this is a case of "a stopped clock tells the white time twice a day," with ye being that stopped clock: as a white guy who is [oh, well... aloof? enjoys casting down the apple of eris with some real talk? but never actually racist], it captured the feeling of: "hey, i've been being compassionate about minorities, what about me? do i just get nothing?"
but then, the rest of ye. i swear, if he were off the rails on dissociatives... ketamine, methoxetamine, nitrous, etc... it would explain so much. like the zappo's founder but with far fewer brain cells

oh, shush, we've been here before -- there was that episode of ST:TNG where a race had no specific gender and all it takes is riker's beard for one of the critters to say: i think i'd like a gender now
that, behind the scenes, riker -- whatever actor's name is -- wanted it to be a boy and for riker to be like... oh, sure, why not. but, no, they copped out and the critter decides a she, they don't even bang, transgender was not even a discussion back then, when someone asked gene dingleberry, creator of star trek, about homosexuality, he reportedly replied: "oh, they'll have solved that by then." like, as in, eliminated it.

star trek is utterly fine if you accept it as a philosophical daydream about the future and not something intended to be the actual, plausible future. it quite baffles me people complaining about the spore drive star trek; that was the fucking best one yet. has a lot of fun with itself. the time crystal stuff, sure, yeah, that's fucking "magic plot device we aren't going to even pretend we have a scientific rationale for" but then if you take a step back that's all of fucking star trek, just a veneer for some philosophical hashing out

just thinking
1) moral outrage is a commodity in america, and many other parts of the world. your average pleb -- overworked, screwed over, and with a vague sense of this but not the marbles to understand precisely why or how -- finally has a reason to go defcon 1 and scream at everyone. from there, it works effectively like taking a dump: it feels great, but only when you've hung on to it for way too long. so a lot of pent-up rage that is unrelated to the matter at hand can come out when people are given social license to go apeshit
2) that this should probably be listed in the DSM, a condition political activists -- of any stripe -- can develop, where all they talk about are their accomplishments and their friends accomplishments and, i guess, leverage their reputation for further accomplishments, whilst not having a single fucking coherent policy idea

i tried NPR again just now: "...and my last name is thurston, but that's english... shout-outs to the white chattel slavery [something something]" or something like that. and i shut it off again
i am neither making any of this up, nor exaggerating the quotes.

it was a standup act and i can tell the white chattel line kind of fell flat from the muted audience reaction.

i mean, NPR truly lost me at "...so he's a black vampire that can kill white racists but he can't change the system" because it's like, you've clearly become so fucking tone-deaf you've lost the ability to realize when you begin to toe the line where someone, like, normal tunes in, and asks themselves: is this a parody? or is this serious? that, unfortunately, it's serious as tetanus nails. this station used to do cool shit like car talk and a weekly hour of celtic music. have you seen blackula? i havent. media tends to feel the need to explain black movies or movies targeted at black communities. im never entirely sure whether phenomenas like blaxploitation CAN be explained or judged, starting who did them and why? i feel like i can enjoy a comedy whatever the context though it can be a delicate matter. see, that seems like a decent watch. blaxploitation is one of those genres that has aged hilariously badly, i.e. disco godfather, which is apparently so unloved you can just watch the whole freaking thing on youtube -- with its insanely tedious ten-minute disco dance intro, the lead guy's catch phrase being "put your weight on it" and PCP-laced weed is curiously called "charmin" like the toilet paper
but no, this sounded like the author talking about his 2022 fiction novel or some shit. nothing that interesting

oh there's some blacula reboot perhaps you're right then. it basically sounded like some obviously gay black guy delivering this line and i presumed it was some tedious fiction novel. my mistake

gonna watch it some day. saw the dolemite eddie murphy and figured one of those ought to be worth my time. i watched a lot of odd 70s 80s flicks, from kung fu b movies to sword and sorcery, cult classics, car chases, rollerskate usa, porn flicks. what a time... note to mental self: rewatch vanishing point.
i could watch a movie every day and wouldnt get bored, but theres work and all those other things.

KW writes, "Ari Emmanuel Can you find a place for the Donda Academy kids to go to school that’s properly zoned for a school? I got about 60 children that have no place to be as they look to transfer. They tried to dismantle our basketball team. Those boys are being penalized without reason. Even professional athletes were threatened by their owners to disassociate."

During treatment, a close friend made a list of behaviors exhibited by Hsieh that led to his intervention. This list included several things that Hsieh believed he could do such as manifest water, transform into animals or objects, and download “talents” to his brain with minimal study. Despite this attempt at treatment and concern from friends, Hsieh continued to use Ketamine and other substances.

"are white people being discriminated against?"
i would not go that far.
it's more that, the same way the christian right gets all loud when they're given the license to unleash a long-car-ride-bowel-movement of moral outrage, only some of which has to do with the situation at hand. then the thing about activists, i said it should be in the DSM, but guess it also covers art twats as well -- they only talk about their accomplishments, their friends' accomplishments, and it's just a PR circlejerk to secure more prestige without having a single policy idea. loudly screaming that black people need to own more businesses, perhaps generally true, but you're all just sniffing each others' farts as inflation kills anyone's enthusiasm to care; the grocery budget suddenly all they have time for. and you're just all chattering with yourselves, and i suspect at some point you'll look up and realize the rest of the group branched off long ago and now you've been so busy talking you're lost deep in the woods. essentially: ok, sure, black lives matter. now what? cleaning up the police forces won't solve everything
