The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou 4 or 5/5
Can't really decide on this one. It started verrry slowly but gradually, as with all of Wes Anderson's films, the characters grew on me in a big way. There were some elements I questioned too, suchly the violence.. and I still think the 'group of eccentrics' feel that was also present in Royal Tenebaums IS slightly contrived, they all seem a little too blissfully unaware how awesome their lives are, if you follow my drift. Other than that I loved it. Beautifully paced and touching.

K-Pax 5/10
An OK attempt to make a quirky alien film, supposedly based on "One Flew over The Cookoos nest" but the only real connection is the fact it's set in a mental hospital.
The films darker tones don't set well with it's overly sentimental flavour.
The Last Samuri 3/10
A totally ridiculous concept of grizzled American cavalry soldier goes to fight with the Samuri, quite why Tom Cruise got involved with this cack after the brilliance of "Vanilla Sky" and "Eyes Wide Shut" is a mystery.
The semi-romantic tonel is totally at odds with the watered down brutality that prevails throughout the film and ultimately this is mass market sugary mainstream fodder that does as much for an accurate portrayal of Japans history as "Braveheart" did for Scotlands.

The Life Aquaitic - ****
wow, what a great film! So much better than I thought it would be from the lukewarm reviews i'd seen, I'm wondering if they actually watched the same film. So many hilarious scenes, all of the cast were excellent and I love the way it was directed, especially the way they did the action scenes, I couldn't stop laughing! i'm tempted to give it 5/5 but i'll have to watch it again first.

anyone seen Repulsion by Polanski? Looks like a pretty amazing film, i'm going to get a box set soon with 3 of his early films.

Some Kind of Monster 4/5 this is the metallica docu. i am not a fan of metallica but this was still very interesting. i especially liked the bits where they were in the studio jamming and writing new material. it was interesting watching a band with two huge egos trying to write music together.
Branded to Kill 3/5 a style driven piece about a bunch of assasins competing for top ranking. extremely bizarre. very disjointed and difficult to follow. but visually very creative. also saw the sequal...
Pistol Opera 3/5 again, very style driven but this time in vivid color. much in the same vein as Tarantino was trying to achieve with Kill Bill though kill bill had a much better story, dialogue, performances substance etc... But i wouldn't doubt that QT took some influence from 'Pistol Opera' for his use of color and lighting in Kill Bill.
interesting note, there is some underage japanese girl toplessness in this picture. not sure how that flies with the MPAA (its NR) or child porn laws, but i got it from Netflix so...

"the layer upon layering of realities" in "eXistenZ" was created in a very lame way.
Jennifer Leigh played horribly [i wish she spoke more clearly, it was as if she spoke her lines to herself]. and Jude Law was, as usual, stiff.
and that "nice twist at the end" is the only good memory of seeing that film. overhyped. i'd rather see Re-Matrix or Re-Re-MAtrix
a biomechanical-pseudo-futuristic drama i'd say. it might have been an ace film though - the idea of "layers upon layers" is great

Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator 4/5
great little docu about the infamous Mark 'Gator' Ragowski aka Mark 'Gator' Anthony. He is a pro skateboarder from the 80's who achieved almost instant superstardom in the skateboarding world as the spokesperson for Vision Street Wear. He eventually lost his fame, lost his friends, lost his girlfriend and finally raped and murdered his ex-girlfriend's friend and is currently spending a long sentence in a California max. security prison.
quite good. shows the evolution of skateboarding in the 80's as well as this shakespearian in magnitude tragedy of the life of a spoiled rotten pro skater!
