None of you mentioned Hecate?! She's IDM, too!

Ophecks: chek out the zhark page, and download those
mp3's.

I don't want to be controversial or anything. And I am not
trying to offend anyone but I get the feeling here we're
scraping the bottom of the barrel. I mean seriously there
are very few girls out there and in my view the ones that
have been mentioned are ok but hardly legendary (in terms of
techno/electronica/IDM) and a lot of them are singer
songwriters. I've heard Hecate, its ok I mean she's fairly
accomplished but I mean she ain't gonna rock the electronic
music world is she. The plain and simple fact that I think
is staring us in the face, is that women ain't interested in
making IDM or whatever you want to call it. As I said at the
beginning of this post, no offence is intended in any way
this is just my analysis.

most female artists blow, le tigre, bikini kill, mira calix,
portishead and fire party are the only good ones I know of,
most of the ones everyone listed is like mainstream shit.
alanis morisette emotional? what the fuck. seems like theyre
arent many underground female artists much. i mean theyre
bands that have a few females in them but im talking about
singing. gybe and their side projects, most have females
and thats all good stuff but theyre not many underground
female singers that are actually good. now obviously I
havent heard anything but its definate that there are more
males just interested in making music.

To be quite honest with u....when I listen to music I dont
give a sh*t whether its made by a guy or a gal...just so
long as it kicks arse.

Yes, a few decent female artists have been mentioned
here....and agreed most are mainstream bollocks...however,
there are some girlz giving it a shot and trying to make
serious music (and not pissing around thinking about gender
issues when we make it!)....so lets see some support guys
;o)

Ok, I dont want to get flamed here... but Im just telling it
how I see it...

here at Berklee... there arny many girls. its like a 7:1
ratio of guys to girls. why? I dont know...

Of all the girls ive met... id say only one (ONE!) was
truely talented musically. She played piano, and was a
master at it. Could improvise like crazy.

Now, I havnt met every girl here, and Ive meet girls that I
havnt heard perform/compose... so Im not giving a definitive
statement.

I have heard many singers... and yes, they are good... but
for me, just singing doesnt cut it for me. You gotta be able
to write music too. And alot of the singers here are just
wannabe divas who only care about singing, and looking
beautiful.

Ive been misinterperted before as being sexist... and im
trying NOT to sound that way.

There are definatly very talented women at berklee... no
doubt about it. Only I havnt met many at all. Im only 3rd
semester, so I have lots of time to meet good girls.

And also that said, there are a lot of guys here that suck
too. :)

But, here is how I kind of see it... KIND OF. Im not saying
it for all women... its a generalization...

but ok...

guys seem to be alot more dedicated to things. Obsessive
maybe?

for example... how many guys do you know that would live
with 2 shirts, 1 pair of jeans for several years, so that
all of thier money could go to musical things? (ie
equipment, instruments etc)

now how many girls do you know who would make such
sacrafices?

Im not saying there are girls who wouldnt... but from my
experiances, I dont ever recall meeting a girl willing to be
so dedicated (obsessed) with music. They love music, but
they have many other priotities that would come first.

*and yes, it is hard for women to make it in the music
industry.

Zeus,

Yeah I tend to agree. The amount of hardcore (decent)
electronic musicians who are girls (and just aren't divas) I
could barely count on one hand, I think its a shame. However
I just guess they're not disposed that way. Still it'd be
cool if some girl just cropped up on the scene who started
to create some mind blowing music like Aphex, Drexciya, BOC
or any of the other classics. In fact thinking about it, it
would probably be wise for said artist to try and be aloof
as possible just in case people get into the music 'cause of
the genda and not because its good. And then after all the
hype, said artist could reveal their genda, that'd be cool
but I guess unlikely to happen that way.

there are some glaring oversights there, such as low, and my
favorite artist (arguably), bjork. i was just picking some
cd's i have that i think Ophecks would particularly like. i
think i play a decent amount of feminine music on my radio
show, so i do listen. but like Zozu i tend not to even keep
gender in mine when listening (outside of the obvious "this
is a (fe)male voice" and just let it stand on its own two
feet.

There have been many women who have been obsessed with some
art form or other to make the sacrifices that you mention,
Zeus. Not necessarily as prevalent in the music industry -
but certainly in the artworld and other creative
industries....anyone would think that guys are the ONLY ones
with troubled souls in this world who feel the need for
obsessive self-expression ;o)

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-12-15 12:10 [#00481536]

of course.

But I was generalizing, as I said.

if you were to calculate the averages... i think the # of
guys to girls in this situation would be ALOT.

I agree. Women have deomonstrated their capacity for
creativity in many, many kitchens around the world.

yeah.. i thought it was cute too.. just sweet :D

and it reminded me of the Massive attack video Teardrop..
(which is a nice song IMO, although not thát very special)
which strongly reminds me of a girl i once met (in Sweden),
'cause i saw the video the first time when i was with her..

now every time i hear it, it brings back the memories.. so
in that way it is special to me,
it's not the song itself that is so very beautiful.. (like
it though)

it also represents my childishness i think
:)
:P
:)

"Well Morton you should've taken an first stage embryo in
that case"
yeahyeah alrightalright
