"Self-consciousness exists in and for itself when, and by
the fact that, it so exists for another; that is, it exists
only in being acknowledged."

I think it sounds better in french : "La conscience de soi
est en soi et pour soi, en tant qu'être reconnu par une
autre conscience de soi, qui est elle-même en soi et pour
soi."

That's just a roundabout way of saying if a tree falls in
the forest and no one's there to hear it, it makes no
sound.

Which, by the way, is wrong. :-)

eh? could you tell me another word for "solipsism" please?
:-)

I don't think you should take it literally... ofcourse a
falling tree always makes a sound.

But i think the question is more philosophical... when does
something start existing?

I believe in the great void, where nothing exists.
Everything that does exist has risen from the void and is
constantly doing so. There is great joy in this.

Solipsism means things only exist if you can perceive them,
like an infant playing peekaboo.

Actually there's a theory that subatomic particles are
constantly being created by quantum fluctuations in the
fabric of spacetime.

Whether or not you believe in a first mover the whole
question of origins is absurd. Ask God why he exists. Either
something else created him with a purpose, in which case
he's not god, or else he's just as puzzled as the rest of
us.

Depends how you define truth. I define truth as knowledge
that is in accordance with reality. And it looks to me like
we're capable of reaching it, or at least enough of it that
it can be meaningful to us.

Of course if you define truth as unknowable from the get-go
you're fucked, because then how do you know that it's
unknowable?

Won't someone please light a little candle in the night? :-)

something has to exist, in some way or another...

ourselves.
if we didn't exist, we couldn't think whether we exist or
not (and all this sort of things).

so if something exists, existance must exist in some way...

but i may be wrong, of course.

I define existence as a popcorn crumb on the floor of a
theater in which a fat old man is performing The Vagina
Monologues to an audience of enraged chimpanzees wearing Eve
Ensler masks.

fleetmouse > we all have a subjective vision of things
(well... we have, don't we?), and cannot know how far it is
from reality...

maybe we're very very far from the 'real' reality, since we
only have our own realities as we perceive them (as we think
reality really is)... we have nothing to compare our visions
to (not even the other people's visions, since we see the
other people through our own subjectivities as well of
course), so we cannot be sure what reality really is.

if truth is what's according to the reality, then we can't
have absolute truth...

at least that's what i think ' _ '
it's probably silly and completely theorical, but i like
this vision of things...
