you could try 'time machines' by coil.

four long, deep pieces which are said to facilitate travel
through time, and whose names are chemical formulæ for
drugs.
don't know if it really works ;)
but i really like it.

i'd go for 'ladies in gentleman, we are floating in space'.
it's their 3rd album (out of 4), its quite varied, unlike
the 1st 2 albums which are quite like the spacemen 3 stuff
(but also very good). its the album which looks like a pill
box. you'll know what i'm on about when you see it.

i think the album you're on about is the new album which the
title escapes me at the moment. its still good but more
straightforward and sensible.

ta for that, remembered that ive got 76:14 and its very
good, recommended.
I have most of FSOL's stuff. Will check out 'time machines'

ladies & gentelman is a really nice album... but ambient?!
If you go in there expecting ambient music, i think you'll
be dissapointed.

If you go in there with an open mind you might love it
though :-)

But you know, since you called the thread "ambient
albums"... just thought i'd warn you ;-)

While you're in the recordstore, see if they've got the
limited edition version of "let it come down". It has a
special 3d-package. Using some sort of an optical illusion,
it looks like the girl's face is real... you almost feel
like could touch it. Truly special, i gazed at it for
atleast 15 minutes. Didn't buy it though, i've heard nothing
but bad things about that album.

Yeh i guess i started the thread with ambient stuff in mind
- but ive got an open mind...so i'll give spiritualized a
try.
I heard tracks on the radio from 'Let it come down' and
didnt like it, although ive seen the weird 3Dish! cover.

i have 'a' ltd ed. of let it come down but its not 3d, its a
solid moulded box, and the cd sits in the back, unles thats
what you mean

is the face of the girl sculptured into your box? Hollow...
i mean... like the box was made of a soft material and the
girl pressed her face into it, and now there is a print of
her face left? like a footprint! (god, this is hard to
explain).

If light comes at it from below, it looks like the face
isn't hollow, but it becomes a very realistic 3d-image. Try
it, if you have the box i tried to describe there :-)

Anyway, what is the music like? I'd buy it just for the box
:-p If the music was anywhere near decent.

the albums quite good - but as i said its much more
straightforward that the others, more song based. no 20
minute tracks etc. but its still quite good.

you'll be lucky if you can still get the ltd ed. cd. you'll
also very extremely fortunate to come across the special
lyric card which also slots in the back with the cd but
didn't actually come with the cd. you had to send off for it
when you got one of those postcards from the single which
preceded the album.

ok... thanks! If i ever should see the ltd ed cd again, i'll
buy it without hesitation! I'd love to have that box
standing on my shelf. And i guess some of the
ladies&gentleman tracks are quite straightforward, and i
still like those so... :-)

With the right lighting you should be able to see the
3d-effect very clearly methinks. Once you've put the box
somewhere (on a shelf or whatever) with the face of the girl
facing forwards. Put a lamp very close to it, and aim the
light so that it shines at her face from below. That's how
they set it up in the store where i saw it, and it worked
incredibly :-)

what about spacemen 3? ive only heard one album quite some
time ago and i didn't really like it that much. have you
heard any?

nope. I know it's the band from which spiritualized stems,
but i've never heard any. Actually i don't know a whole lot
about spiritualized anyway ;-)

I just bought the ladies&gentleman-cd one time when it was
on sale for about 2,50 EUROS and i vaguely remembered it
getting good reviews. It was more or less by accident, but i
really liked the album! So far it's the only thing i've got
by them.

yeah, you cant forget brian eno..
apollo, music for airports, discreet music shutov assembly,
and on land are all great

also look for the albums he did with harold budd ...'the
pearl' and 'the plateaux of mirror'
very nice indeed
harold budd has some solo stuff also, 'the room' is the only
one i've heard though

i second the recommendations for rotor+ and stars of the lid
too

also check out lustmord.. really dark sinister ambient
i'd also try set fire to flames.. its a more ambient side
project of gybe

also check out tim hecker and decal
i havent heard as much as their stuff but it seems nice
