Autechre in 5 years

Can anyone else find it hard to see a melodious future for
Autechre? If you were to make a graph of their career,
release wise, melodies on the y, glitchyness on the x, a
steady 45 degree line would be the result going this way \.

But don't you reckon, where does their creative future lie?
It's been like say a fine english artist like say Constable,
growing up and evolving into Picasso. (not that i have
anything against either of them).

So in 5 years, what will they be like? Merzbow?

graph?

In five years you asshats will be wishing for the classic,
melodic sounds of Gantz Graf.

Seriously though, would you be happier if they were one of
those bands that doesn't evolve... like BoC? *ducks*

Hey, BOC do evolve..... haven't you noticed they have learnt
now to make up fantasy words like "Geogaddi"........

Considering confield is garbage, i think they're going down
hill, old stuff was great tho.

poly-c - it was just a good observation that is
completely true! nice one!

i was going to replace glitchyness with shitness but when
shitness becomes negative it turns into goodness - which
wasn't the point i was trying to get across!

they're stuff post lp5 is quite hard going though imo. I
admire it, but usually only one or two tracks at a time.

fleetmouse - i am all for evolving bands or producers - the
best ones do eg aphex twinymething.

it seems a bit odd and a little uncreative to me that
autechre should abandon their melodious roots in favour of
reckless unfriendly psycho beats.

and as far as boc's concerned you're right, mhtrtc and
geogaddi are very similar in styles, but still both great
albums.

i'm not one to speculate, but i'll just say five years from
now i will look into their latest release up to that date

me too, who knows, maybe my musical tastes evolve exactly
five years behind autechres in some mystical force of the
cosmos

Who cares really...... 5 years ago i listened mainly
death/black metal, so i think in about 5 years i might not
be into IDM anymore.......

boc only really evolved with in a beautiful place, then they
devolved or something back...

and with ae... i think the middle years were the best...
incunabula and amber are decent, but not nearly as good as
the other two i mentioned earlier

offline jamesa from United Kingdom on 2002-10-19 14:43 [#00409283]

yip, you're right. and i guess that is why i do care,

do they care - fuck no.

37 times better the AE.....

mainstream! and that would prolly not be a good thing..

Cichlisuite is where Autechre started to get really good
imho. EP7, Peel 2 and Confield are my favorites. The first
year I owned EP7 I listened to it through at least once
daily.

"it's like - the talents there, but they're not utilising it

the way i want them to! "

theyre using their talent the way i want them too, so i
guess everything is blanaced.

i think ae's music is constantly evolving, the problem is
that you dont seem to do the same. you're stuck to their
earlier more melodic tracks and just wish they'd continue to
use the same formula. im glad theyre not.

it makes me giggle...
accelera 1&2 make me giggle as well...
i have a cd i made, with those two songs and then the radio
mix. it's quite an odd combination...
i should put cavityjob and gantz graf on a cd together, like
an abridged history of ae :x

i think they'll be releasing discs with different noise
colors IE pink, white, etc. just at different freqs and
different durations. And after that i think they'll
prouduce music for dogs only using freqs they can hear...

offline jamesa from United Kingdom on 2002-10-19 17:31 [#00409513]

Cortex- No, you're right in thinking i'm not too hot on the
new stuff - though can't wait to get the dvd - but what i'm
saying is that in my humble opinion i would prefer it if
they had evolved in a different, slightly less unfriendly,
cold kind of a way. That's just me. If you like it then
super. I just can't listen to confield the whole way
through, but tri repetae, lp5 and incunabula will last
forever.

I would hate to see them use the same formula, the 3 albums
mentioned showed progression that would be easy to
recognise, fan or not, and i think they're great. To take
away the melody for me is a shame or rather remove an
essence of something that i will enjoy remembering
throughout my day. I doubt i'm the only one that thinks like
this.

Have a listen to drukqs cd 1 track 7 - now there is
progression without compromising melody!
