Where do you get your IDM?

There's this record store in the city that I live in called
'Rare records'. I always get my IDM records there. They have
everything!
So, does everyone have like this really great stand alone
record store with pretty much all the IDM you want or are
you forced to buy it on the internet?

The only place round here that sells any is HMV. And when I
went to look for some stuff yesterday, everything I wanted
had gone :/

Apart from the Windowlicker EP.

I seriously wouldn't be surprised if rare records has the
whole warp and rephlex collection (or at least a very big
part of it). It's a goldmine :D

like all my records... virgin megastore, fnac, fnac.com or
amazon.

i noticed they had much more autechre in the virgin
megastore after the release of gantz graf... confield,
incunabula, tri repetae, gantz graf, ep7... the gantz graf
video was even airing in the shop... it must have been quite
a commercial success for them. maybe.

Rare Records is incredible! Eindhoven is quite far away from
where i live, but i've ordered records from them (thanks to
morton :-)), and indeed saw at their site that they have an
incredible amount of warp-records!

In one of their mails they wrote me that they are the
"hofleveranciers" (you translate that ;-)) of Warp for the
benelux. They get almost everything that gets released by
Warp, shipped to them right away.

I love 'em!

Other than that Plato usually has a nice selection of music,
as well as Velvet.

Nowadays Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada can be found nearly
everywhere. I actually bought Twoism at my local Free Record
Shop :-p

I'm very happy that IDM is one of the least commercial music
genres, but before I discovered rare records I was always so
annoyed by the fact that I couldn't find ANYTHING ANYWHERE!
Like, all that the other shops had was maybe come to daddy,
windowlicker and ganz graf.
And I hate ordering online.

offline martinhm from York (United Kingdom) on 2003-01-15 09:36 [#00514947]

imperial had a huge selection of "idm" back when warp were
going through their discount phase, but towards the end of
last year they relegated it to a tiny section of the shop.

Plato isn't that good - they are kind of erratic in which
records they order.

I go to Amsterdam for the stuff thats harder to find -
Concerto and ESPECIALLY Get Records.. man, when I go there I
have to bring along about 100 euros.. I never leave without
something..

and ofcourse onlineonlineONLINE!

Plato in Leiden rocks. A few months ago, i went there to
listen to Hard Normal Daddy, and got into a conversation
with one of the guys behind the counter who turned out to be
a great fan of the Squarepusher.

He even told me his theory that Go Plastic is still a
jazz-album, but you need to have heard his previous releases
to understand it.

Granted they don't have everything... but every time i go
there they seem to have atleast something that i wanted
really bad ;-)

Near where I live is a store called "Satisfaction Records"
and you can get lots of uncommercial music there, most of
the IDM albums have to be ordered through them though. Most
of the times I order at bol.com

CD Esoterik here in Montreal, which also has freejazz, indie
pop, experimental, noise, and all manner of weird old vinyl,
like a record of Klaus Kinski reciting Nietzsche and
Baudelaire (the clerk told me that everytime that record is

we have this cool shop totally oriented on elecronic music,
i could probably get almost all stuff there, but the thing
is it take them some time to get a certain album, so i
usually order on internet
i'd say i order like 30% on internet and 70% in shop
overhere

I'm not nexus6, but let me again point you to
their site...

It is completely in english, and if you click on the link
"route", there is even a map of Eindhoven explaining
where the store is :-)

(NS station = the train station, which would probably be
where you arrive in the city)

the main problem is that all the good musicstores tend to be
hidden in backalleys...

If you go unprepared to a city you don't know very well...
chances are you won't find any interesting shops at all.

anyway here where I get the good stuff:
- internet
- bullit (recordstore)
- cd-theek (often cheap there as it is 2nd hand)
- rare records

now I don't have any money so I stick to the internet :(

Well that's just untrue. For the record, one particular guys
actually recommended I get the normal Private Press as
opposed to the Special Edition with the bonus second CD,
because it 'wasn't worth it', even though it set them back
an extra 4 quid.
