I have 5.1 on my turntables.
I've heard music played on a really good system and you're right it does sound a lot better. Once I have my own house I'll almost certainly get a very good hi-fi. At the moment I'm moving around a lot and don't have money to burn so I see little point in buying even a "mid range" quality system. My flatmate has a nice Marantz system, but he doesn't look after his cabling/connects and as a result it crackles all the time :(

Dirty, oxidised cable ends- not put into plugs securely, cable just "hooped" around connection point at the back of the speakers, all for the sake of a few £s for decent connectors, etc. really bad as it would otherwise be a decent stereo.

I hope not. You can't make digital copies of SACD, so we'll all be going 1 step backwards to making analog copies again.

Probably, but the first generation of SACD players didn't even have a digital audio out. What does that tell you. Even now there is no standard for that yet.
Does your SACD player have a digital out? I'm just curious.

CD players have two sets of outputs - analog, which are the regular white/red RCA cables, and a digital out, which is usually just a square plug. The digital out should give cleaner sound.
It was just odd that the first SACD players were boasting of very high fidelty and didn't even have the high-quality digital output.

Yeah invest in a good system. Take some time to read reviews then go and have a listen. Listen to the hi-fi shops recommendations, but let your ears be the ultimate judge.
Don't buy a "Lifestyle" system that looks pretty, after all, you're gonna listen to it, not look at it.
My system: Arcam Alpha 8SE CD 2 x Rotel RB981 power amps (360 RMS each) Creek OBH12 passive pre amp Yamaha DSP-E800 processor Sony DVPS725D DVD player Sony 28" WEGA TV B&W DM603 S2 front speakers B&W centre and rear speakers
and if you buy a turntable get a belt drive unless you spend all your time mixing. Belt drives sound a lot nicer.

some people spend over £20000 on a car because they love cars...

Sony is still playing games with their SACD players. I checked out their top of the line model and it has digital out for CD only, not SACD.

It's a bit complicated, but kind of clever. It works by fooling around with the 16th bit of the digital signal, using it like morse code to tell the HDCD decoder what to do. I guess this is very high frequency sound that we can't hear.

I actually don't care that much for the quality of my stereo-system.
The most important thing for me is that it is very strong (in other words: won't break easily... i used to buy even cheaper systems, but i got tired of having to replace them every two years). I don't like to have 10.000 different options to twiddle with the sounds forever... i prefer my stereo to be sweet and simple :-)
Just open tray - insert cd - press play.
I'm sure if i would invest more money i could get a much better system with much better sound... but i can't really be bothered. The difference will only be small... i wouldn't really notice it. I'd rather spend that extra cash to buy some more cd's ;-)
Good music will sound good on any system!

yeah lots of buttons is a bad idea! the simpler the better! if you guys want an excellent free hi-fi upgrade, throw your "graphic equaliser" out the window! they inherently degrade the sound, unless it's studio equipment

.....like other people have said, i think it makes a HUGE difference
ive heard some pretty damn good speakers in my day (not mine though :( and you can hear TONS of stuff that simply doesn't show up on crappy systems
especially with stuff like Boards of Canada i think it makes a huge difference
im planning on purchasing some GOOD headphones in the near future....
...like a couple hundred dollars at least im leaning towards a pair of Sennheisers (sp?) right now...
IME headphones are better value than speakers if u want good sound on a budget
for a couple hundred dollars you can get better headphones than speakers, but of course speakers win out as the ultimate listening equipment if money is not a concern, at least from my experience and what ive read
any suggestions?

sennheisers tend to be good i have a pair of beyer DT531's, they've stould up to a lot of abuse over the years and sound great.
it would seem the germans make good headphones...
headphones can be a budget way to experience gorgeous sound, but with speakers you can FEEL the music, the feeling of a kickdrum tingling your skin and vibrating your internal organs is an incredible sensation!
