Confield... what were they thinking?!?

Hehe... just kidding ;-) I also bought this album today
(yes... an expensive day for me today :-s... but this store
was giving a way a free exclusive cd-single with every
purchase... and i really wanted that, so i had to buy
something, and confield was the only interesting
thing i could find. :-) So that makes it okay :-p)

I had sort of anticipated hating it on first listen... and
on the way home in the train, i had already decided i would
make a topic about it called "confield... what were they
thinking?!?" Lol...

Hm... but now i wonder what all the fuss was about? Everyone
saying it's so extreme and inaccesable? I listened to it one
time this evening, and instantly liked it. The rhythms
are very complicated... i'll give it that. Sometimes
it seems almost random... but the melodies sound very clear
to my ears. And that made it rather enjoyable already this
first time :-) (i find LP5 much harder to get into for
instance).

Also i have to disagree with everyone who has said that it
sounds cold. I feel the exact opposite... it made me feel
very warm and safe... The sounds really seemed to wrap
themselves around me. I felt like an unborn baby, cozy in
his womb or something :-)

well it's a dutch artist called Spinvis. But it also has
dutch vocals... so i really doubt anyone outside of holland
will have heard of him :-)

cfern and pen expers were the only tracks I liked instantly.
The rest took longer to click.

I still don't like eidetic casein. The sound wobbles and
warbles in a way that makes me nauseous - it's like being
forced to ride a bus through the worst hangover ever, over a
bad bumpy road through a district of mutants and industrial
parks.

Hmmm, now I wanna go listen to it again!

Ohja? Dat wist ik niet :-)
Dan moet je de cd van Spinvis ook maar eens kopen! :-p
Briljante muziek! En die single was een speciale promosingle
van het nummer "bagagedrager" met een heel nieuw nummer als
b-kant!! :-)

Well i guess everyone is entitled to his opinion. But let me

funny! It's very serious and beautiful music. It gives me
all sorts of emotions... but has never made me laugh.

ha! I didn't know that yet. But i'm not surprised. It got
raving reviews all over the place... and everyone seems to
love it.

Still it's nice to know :-) Thanks! I'm sure Spinvis himself

Best idm-album ever eh? Hm... well it's a little too soon
for me to make such judgements about it. But i did really
like it :-)

And i think it's wise of you to have such expectations for
the next album... if you were expecting it to be even
better, you would have probably been dissapointed. And now
you won't be... and maybe the new album will even take you
by surprise and prove to be better after all :-p (*has alot
of confidence in ae*)

cfern is the second track with a real swingin' 6/4 rhythm.

pen expers is the third track. It has a hip-hoppity beat and
some valiant organ notes that try to come in partway through
the track and get beaten down by the percussion.

sim gishel is the fourth track. It has a melody best
described as "indeterminate". If you listen to it on good
headphones it sounds like little carbonated explosions are
going off in your spine.

VI scose is the first track right? I remember that... and if

it you're saying the first and the 2nd track sort of have
the same melody? Interesting! :-) I'll have to pay attention

Now THAT would be interesting! Autechre with dutch
songtitles :-D

I think sonic youth already once made an EP that had dutch
songtitles... hehe... one of the tracks was called
"slaapkamers met slagroom" (bedrooms with whipped cream).
It'd be awesome if autechre did that!

Us dutchies could charge the rest of the board huge sums of
money to translate the titles for them! ;-)

"cfern is the second track with a real swingin' 6/4
rhythm.
"

Actually i'll admit right away that i have no musical
knowledge whatsoever, so i have no idea what a 6/4 rhythm
is. But I know what i hear, and it sounds great! The rhythm
is swinging... but i think it also sounds sort of... tired?
Like the song is dragging itself forward... one exhausted
step at a time. It's just the way those drums sound a little
sloppy... sometimes they come in a little too soon or a
little too late (which i love... it gives the track it's
character!)... but i think that is why i feel it as sort of
tired :-) The little melody in there is wonderful!

"pen expers is the third track. It has a hip-hoppity beat
and some valiant organ notes that try to come in partway
through the track and get beaten down by the
percussion.
"

Well i almost agree with you there :-) I hear exactly what
you hear... except i wouldn't say the organ part gets
"beaten down" by the percussion? At first they sound very
weak, and indeed are mostly obscured by the percussion. But
the organ-melody becomes clearer and more upfront all the
time! If anyone's beating anyone... i'd say that organ is
giving the percussion a rough time ;-) No but seriously...
it sounds very optimistic and victorious to me. That melody
just won't be pushed away, and through all the chaos becomes
louder and louder! Beautiful! Even though this song somehow
also reminds me of a sad funeral march... damn... this music
is unlike anything i've ever heard! So much associations,
all at the same time... i love it! :-)

But as it turns out, these two were actually the ones
that had been giving me goosebumps. Not to say that the
other tracks don't do anything for me. But these two in
particular stood out to me on the first listen :-)

cfern is so cool... the more you listen to it the more the
"off" beats make sense.

I get the feeling they had two rhythms, one at the beginning
and one at the end, and somehow let a piece of software
create a gradient between them so the beat morphs. At one
point in the song it swerves back and forth like it could go
either way. Wicked.

I wonder if that's something they did with that Kyma setup
they are reputed to have used.

Cfern is one of those rare Autechre tracks with some real
SWING and some ZING. Definitely a first rate ass shaker. I
love it when the beats kind of speed up out of control and
then catch themselves and get back in time.
