That is why I know which 10 CDs I listened to more than any other in 2002:
1. Autechre - Peel Session 2. Autechre - LP5 3. Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children 4. Autechre - EP7 5. Autechre - Confield 6. Autechre - Peel Session 2 7. Godspeed You Black Emperor! - f#a#infinity 8. Boards Of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
9. Aphex Twin - Richard D. James 10. Autechre - Envane
What's worse, I can also tell you I listened to 394 of my CDs during the year, with a total of 2276 individual listenings.
Fear the man with time on his hands and a spreadsheet.

It all stems from being useless at trying to pick something to listen to. I bunged all the CDs on a spreadsheet and randomly sort them, then choose one from the first 10, makes my life a lot easier.
It was just a step from that to recording how many times they were listened to. It's also a good way to filter out stuff that's fallen from favour, anything that hasn't been listened to for over a year gets cut from the playlist.

It would be a lot easier if you just got the Winamp plugin that tracks the songs you listen to and sorts them by popularity. Assuming you use Winamp.

Doesn't the new version of Windows Media Player do things like that... and even compiles a list of songs you play at night, etc.

No, I listen to all my CDs through hi-fi equipment. I used to listen to music on the PC back in the Napster days, but now I buy all my music it's all through the hi-fi.

I record the number of plays of each CD on the spreadsheet, if you sort by number of plays you can see how many have been listened to.

most people perceive a "life" as going out with friends and being socially active, however I think that most of these people are just as lost as people that "don't" go around and socialise
