Unless you live in a place big enough to have a Virgin or HMV or lucky enough to have a good indie store there is no point in looking.
My local Andys Records has no Autechre, nothing off Rephlex, Skam, Planet Mu. I have to wait 'till I go to bigger places like Manchester, to buy my CDs

I buy most of my stuff from Reveal Records in Derby. What they lose by not being a very big shop they make up for in having pretty good taste.
I used to get everything from Selectadisc in Nottingham, but since I no longer work there I don't have cause to go into the city much. Still, I can definitely recommend them.
It's rare that I buy music online. I just like going into a shop and rifling through what they have, see what I can dig up. Unless there's a big release out that I specifically want, I really have no idea what I'm going to come out of the shop with,

People the place to go to get records is Soho in London particularly Berwick Street. Though its a very grubby and dirty street. Actually I don't really go there anymore but if I want to buy stuff from Rephlex/Planet-Mu etc thats where I'd probably go but then I may also go to HMV down Oxford Street which la la la la la la talking to myself la la la its a nice day la la la la.........

Best place for me in London is Rough Trade, I can spend hours rummaging around in there.

London has a marginally bigger selection, but their layout sucks and it gets way too busy.

danbrusca,
Rough Trade is pretty good. I haven't been there for a long time though. Fat Cat used to be the definitive place to go for the cool releases. It was definitely the mecca for techno and electronic music says 5 years ago, but it closed down. Ask anyone and they'll tell you. Those were the days.
