i havent listened to surfing on sine waves in ages, so i put it on.
i remember when i bought it years ago, i thought it would always sound fresh, but today, it sounded so dated...
im wondering if other aphex material i now think are timeless wont be a few years ahead.
any similar experience happened to you?

I know this isn't exactly what you asked but I can't listen to Hard Normal Daddy anymore for the very same reason. I loved that release when it came out - now I might as well throw it in the garbage.

A lot of his early stuff sounds dated, ESPECIALLY Surfing, but that's part of the charm, for me... I'm relatively new to this stuff, it's a nice history lesson.
I can't imagine the RDJ Album getting old, but it probably will... but I think it still sounds so damn fresh 6-7 years later, hella better and more varied than anything Squarepusher or BOC is putting out.

I dont think any music sounds dated ever really, it has its place in time yknow,
try leaving it on the shelf for a while more and listening to it when youd like to remember a certain part of your life, it'll almost be a trip to your life at a certain point every time you listen to it, that might help you understand what you originally liked about it more
either that or listen to your stuff more intently when you first get it, maybe you never really liked sosw in the first place
I dont know, but I think its pretty good (but I also think anything aphex has done is good)

Ophecks how long have u been into Aphex then? I would have to say that 'Surfing on Sine Waves' is probably my best Aphex moment. Perhaps it does sound dated I don't know. Best stuff for me though. I remember listening to it 8 years ago to be honest electronica music has never been better.

by dated, i mean that it couldnt be released in 2002. sosw really sounds early 90s to me now.
dated doesnt mean 'not good anymore' though.

I heard him at Christmas 2000, but didn't really get into electronic music till a couple months into 2001. So to me, anything before Confield is ancient history to me.
I think the RDJ Album sounds like it could have been released these days, though, but not ICBYD. Though that's a frickin' great album.

the beatles are timeless, that's why they're considered rather better than most other bands

i really do hope so :)
maybe it will be considered a "masterpiece" in 20 years time. for a record or a band to gain more respect they've got to have been going quite a while, i guess

i think the caustic window stuff sounds the most dated, and the rdj album is the most original thing he has done.
but at the same time, it has spawned a shit load of imitators who are a bit second rate.
but if the caustic window stuff was made with modern studio gear, it would be mental. then that would sound better in my eyes. but as it is, it is still good.
my least favourite album is drukqs, purely because he's not breaking new grounds with it, just treading water i reckon.
the next album proper will blow it out of the water me thinks.

that is so true! :)

give it time and a few more plays and you'll love it, trust me. it grows on you, the more you play it :)

believe me, i've listened to drukqs maybe 20 times. not a lot by some peoples standards i know, but i know its the the best thing he's done. album of the year for 2001 by a mile though.
but wheres the progression from rdj. that for me set a real benchmark, mindblowing stuff. i personally didn't download any before its release, so it was all a suprise to me. maybe i expected too much from it? afterall it did have a lot to live up to.

and the production is way better than rdj too. the album is just less innovative, but i cant expect that everyone of his releases will reinvent himself everytime!
