an origziation of line of notes.
harmony is more than one melody at time.
almost all western music uses 12 notes only.

well, almost correct, aron, it's a succesion of tones, but who's to say what's logical. i say it's a succesion of tones Period.. i am dumbfounded by people who can't hear melody where others can. are they tonedeaf? if so how can they listen to music?

I since have both discovered Autechre's wonderfullness, and still don't think they're the most melodious of bands ever..but, I love them for the way their sounds morph and errupt in wonderful ways during confield.
Plus, I posted that, like, YEARS ago. We all change.

the real definitions of melody are very closely intertwined with harmony, and if you really want a useful definition other than "a bunch of notes", you'll need a decent music theory foundation.
Even your autechre is melodic, as frequency exists on some level in all sound, and frequency is pitch and even your drums have tone and play melodies you like.
What do you think doooooo chee.... doo chee.. dooooo chee.... doo chee.. Could be other than a drum and bass drumline.

you probably only think horizontal because of the western customary writing format, left to right. maybe a tone sequence develops bottom to top, or from a single point outward in all directions.

or maybe horizontal was assumed because time is usually represented on the x-axis, and melody develops through time. traditionally, time has been thought of as cyclical.

melody is real hard. according to my dad (who i totally respect as a nusician), I rarely actually write melodies in songs.
Apparently there is a ig diff between a melody and a riff. Apart ffrom melodies being actually longer, of course.
I still don't quite understand the difference, but I am one of thos epplmwhniging at there not being enough melodical content in IDM songs hehe.
Well I don't kick up a fuss about it or anything.
Sometimes it just seems liek they create a chord and fuck with it (I thin kid606 does this a lot) and play with tones, but dont actually write riffs n stuff.
I'm all abotu hooks, though, I reckon braindance should have mroe hooks. :)

I think technically youre wrong. I don't think melody has anythgin to do with the sound, and very little to do with patterns
but youre right in that it sounds a WHOLE lot better fi you use decent sounds to do it.
Yeah I think that's mroe sound structuring crossed with melody, or using sound structuring on the melody
but i could be wrong!

hahahahaha "what is melody?" you GOTTA be kidding me. heres everyone's music lesson for the day... music, by it's very definition MUST include the following: rhythm, harmony, and melody. if you understand what those things REALLY are, and not what you THINK they are (ie. they are NOT sounds or styles of writing, you could have all three in ONE instrument) THEN you begin to understand degenerativce qualities in someone like autechre's work. BUT, when you sacrifice one element of the musical trinity, you start to see problems and limitations. when you remove 2 elements (as gantz graf has done) you start to have a lack of musical quality AT ALL. to be honest, you can say anything oyu want after this is posted, it doesn't matter. you CANT refute this, unless you think somehow your personal musical knowledge is beyond that of people liek beethoven, mozart, etc... these people were the great grandaddies of experimental music. they perfected it, in a certain sense. if beethoven was here alive today, i believe that after the initial shock of modern music writing, he would himself write heavily in electronics. this is a greta artform, but you people need to stop subscribing to this whole "what is music crap" becuase you ARE gonna ruin a good thing. enough of this whole "whoah, that sounds effed up" crap. venetian snares? puhlease. you guys must be hard-up for some new music. this whole "mind rape" artistry is bunk. this whole "idm" thing (go ahead, act like there is no genre still) is gonna sink or swim, and i guarantee you that the hardcore mentality is gonna be what kills it. "all you need is noise-beats"... puhlease.

Here is sort of my underlying musical philosophy: having slightly different but otherwise symmetrical units.
It's pretty much the rule I worked out be listening and by creating myself. It works with melody, percussion, etc. It works in reference to position in time, pitch, panning position etc.

you dont need harmony in music you dont. cos the first music in all of time was just a single melody line like a big chant,
& for hevquip who asked what harmony is its notes added to a melody to create a texture. like different intervals of notes. basically. see you could put another different melody underneath yer melody or as a bassline, or you could put some of the old chords underneath. bit good that explanation! well its no essay. oh no.

tibbar, rhythm, harmony and melody are (european) cultural concepts. they're artificial labels that aren't necessary applicable in other cultures (or their music). besides, is a piece played only on untoned drums not music? if a piece only consists of a succesion of chords (say on an organ) with no regard to how long they're played, is that not music? it's okay to say that good music in your opinion has all three, but get real.

harmony is needed for music to be music. not MELODY, but actually HARMONY. and no, Hannibal, it has nothing to do with notes or something. you're talking like you've just left some music school... yuck. look up the original meaning of 'harmony'. eastern music is ancient, and it surely has harmony. primitive tribes make harmonic music. there is often no rythm, but that makes no difference, since it's not a necessary thing. 'harmonic' means all of the parts corresponding properly and is possible without melody or rythm or anything our goddamn western culture made up for that. PS people playing didgeridoo or sticks (sticks?) make harmonic noise.
because they wouldn't have been attracted to this kind of entertainment if there was no harmony in it.
2Jesus: you make some point. strong degenerative qualities in Ae music have been around quite a while... since LP5, I suppose.
PS true music relates to noise like true love relates to plain fucking, I suppose

for people who like this experimental genre, you guys can act pretty closed minded.
Asking what a melody is... ok. Fair question. Its an established element, that can be recognized. And therefor has a definition.
But to say onething is or isnt music. Thats just total bullshit.
A guy could just record himself goin "uhhhh" for 30 seconds, and although you might not like it, he does, and someother people might too. So who are any of you to say it isnt music? Its subjective.
Just love what you love, and accept what you hate. It really gets under my skin how people are so quick to dissmiss things as not being music.
