I just can't seem to stop playing in Eb. It just falls
under the fingers so nicely. I'm playing some arpeggio
stuffs inspired by Cage's In a Landscape. Makes me feel ever
so sensitive and artistic. :-)

That's how you play the main riff from Take Five by Dave
Brubeck. The bass notes are Eb, Ab, and the chords are Bb,
Eb,Gb and Ab,Db,Eb.

Now playing a riff in 5/4 on all black keys, that'll really
wow the serpents.

*applause* for leaky

Bizzy, that's an odd key... I used to have a guitar riff I
played in C#m.

I don't have all my keys memorized on keyboard so to shake
hands with an unfamiliar one I like to find the dorian mode
and noodle in it. In E / C#m that starts on F# which makes
it a queer one to finger.

d minor

its the saddest key. gotta love utter saddness.

"i prefer the black keys. adds exotic flavours to the

ok, but what if you are in the key of C#? then the white
keys are the ones that add flavor :)
Its all relative.

"d minor - the saddest of keys" - from spinal tap?

The Wisdom of Spinal Tap

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2002-12-07 18:36 [#00472633]

I find the design of the piano keyboard breaks the
relativity of the key signatures by making certain phrases
easier or more difficult in certain key sigs. Like, you can
slip off a black key and onto a white key with the same
finger in some keys but you couldn't pull that move in C
major (except with an accidental but let's not split
hairs).

On the other hand if you're playing guitar or bass,
neglecting the open strings, a scale position feels pretty
much the same if you slide it up or down a few frets.

C#m is tricky, but when you get stuck playing it, it gets
easier. I'm the Mastress (looks like Matress) of C#m now...

I dont know what key I play in.
I just have a set of keys on my synth that I like. the E,F#,
A and B are hardly ever used.
And when it doesnt right, I just transpose it in cakewalk
until it has the right sound.
I can read notes, but it takes me some time.
Deliberately disconnected myself from things as chords and
reading notes.
I can play more intuitive now.

I'd like to design a flat keyboard with no black keys -
every key would be a semitone apart. And I'd have icons on
them so you could find your way around. Instead of do, re,
mi, it would be Hello Kitty, Goatse, Aphex.

I used to play clarinet. And since for sharps and flats you
often have to reach around and diddle litle levers it tends
to make you think of key signatures as absolutes.

There are so many "accidents" and historically imposed
parameters in music - culture, the design of instruments
like the keyboard, the shape of the human hand, and they all
contribute to making one key different from another in lots
of subtle ways.

I wonder, since electronic instruments are becoming so
common, will pure temperament ever come back in a big way?
After all you can reconfigure the tuning at the push of a
button...

yes. most experimental composers today are experimenting
with microtonal music.
