lack of artwork

last night i was out with some money, at the cd store, and
i had 'royal astronomy' and 'big loada' in my hands. i have
both of these cd's burned, but i always try to get the
official release if i like the cd enough. anyways, i was
about to go pay, when i noticed both of these cd's had one
piece of paper for an insert. not even folded over. part of
the reason i get the authentic release is for the inserts,
and all that. i was really put off by that...

any of you guys ever not bought something, cuz of the
lack of artwork?

I oppose the lack of inside artwork, otherwise whats the
point of buying the cd, when you can d/l it. I too own Royal
Astronomy, the front cover is brilliant but i do think more
could have been added on the inside.

sometimes I get upset, but its understandable that there is
only a sleave in some "IDM" albums. Because it takes more
money to make a bigger book, and your sacrifycing how many
people you will reach.... but artists like autechre bigger
artists that you know could have better art work and not
worry about pressing costs as much... I get upset at that. I
love schematic releases because they usually have great
artwork going on... I liked the special edition BOC release
with all those pictues, that was really cool.

I always buy a release though if I like the music, because
thats what its really all about in the long run... is the
music. The artwork is just the icing on the cake

its to do with costs, that little bit of paper can be the
difference between making a loss and making a profit on a
release - margins are tiny for the artist

the thing I hate is when a band doesn't include lyrics to
their songs, you ask (indirectly) why they've done that, and
all you'll get told is "figure them out yourself!" - that's
so retarded. they spend a good chunk of money on design and
packaging, but they can't just be nice and include lyrics
too? like tool's "Lateralus"... they went all-out for that
thing, but still no lyrics

the thing i reaaaaaaaalllllly dislike is the cd boxes, i put
al my cds into big containers just wit the front and baack
cover inside and i throw the cd boxes out of my window, cos
i get fucking mad each time i broked one of these and it
always happens !!!!!!!!
plastic cd boxes are shiiiiiiiiiiitttt !!!!!!

It's become more important now, buying an album because of
it's packaging because I can always find it so easily on the
net.
It IS frustrating when an artist has only a single inlay but
like J-HOK said, it's to cut down on production costs,
ultimately bands/artists want to make money off cds and
having an extravagent booklet really takes a lot of cash out
of their pockets. Nowadays I only buy cds to add to a
collection, if I have a lot of stuff by one artist who I
still like and respect then I will continue to support them,
otherwise fuck em get it for nowt

expect to see less colours/ special packaging as profit
margins drop

thats why im switching to MP3 web delivery of my music, cut
out the intermediate physical stage :)

But will you ever release anything on rephlex again?

But there was interview linked on here not so long back
which was from the director of some record company - "If the
profits go down, then we stick the prices up. Put some extra
dvd footage of people in the studio, people love that shit"

This is the way it will go until CDs finally die

I hope that the cd format never dies....

I just hope that people will get less greedy and tone down
some of the ridiculous production costs... it would be great
if cd prices got down to 10 dollars... but this will never
happen

thats far in the future. I like the fact i can finish a
track, then release it on the net, and people are listening
within a few hours - no need to buy anything - no 0.8kps
downloads from soulseek - direct from my computer to yours.

i have not bought cds because of the artwork, but it wasn't
because it hadn't enough artwork. it was because the artwork
was too cheesy/ugly.

Why yes indeed, for instance cascade by Future Sounds of
London, a really abstract 3d blob like structure resembling
some sort of cellular structure cd cover art. Early 90s
before all that abstract 3d shit became popular, and the
music was goooood :)

i used to care greatly about what images were on the inside.
now it's like eh, i don't care as much.

I have never cared about album covers. especially not the
insides. I normally just throw the box away and keep the cd
or maybe throw both away if they are crap.

ok i didnt read all of this... but heres my 2 cents:

1. the music comes first.
2. you should be more concerned with supporting an artist
you like.
3. usually (not always) but usually, the musician whos music
you are buying, doesnt even make the cover art, so its not
like a HUGE importance of if there are pictures... cause the
artist didnt even make those pictures.

"stop whinning"

i don't download now, becasue i can't be arrsed so i have no
choice. But if i know most of the songs anyway i will go for
the albums with arrtworrk. (i'm not saying that makes my
descision, i won't get an album i don't want coz it has arrt
worrk, but if i like 2 and one has arrtworrk i will go forr
that, coz its seems morre worth it. i will just get my mate
to burrn me the otherr one)

A great example is Do you know sq...Take the inlay for
example ..how simple and un-informative is that?I love
it.But music is about the music and not the commercialism.

in that case then therre is no prroblem with downloading,
lets all download everrysong we everr want to herre, lets
make it 100% anti-commercial, lets not even use the
interrnet and tell people someone has a new album out, fuck
that i say people should make music forr no one but themself
and play it in sound prroof rrooms.

offline Anus_Presley on 2002-12-01 07:36 [#00463086]

my point is that therre arre limits. and if a little book
will make someone buy a CD rratherr than download, i don't
see the harrm.

i think CDs will die - cos they look so ugly - 12 vinyl will
be the only physical music worth buying cos it looks lovely.
and mp3s or ogg or whatever will rule thee earth. AT LEAST
THIS IS WHAT I HOPE WILL HAPPEN
