You people who play didge and aren't able to do circular
breathing: It took me five minutes of a large glass of water
and a straw. Just try to make a stream of bubble that never
stops...

offline Dolleater from Afrika Bambaataa on 2002-11-23 20:47 [#00453527]

It sucks because it reminds me of my futile attempt to blow
into the mouthpiece right without it sounding like I have
gastrto-intestinal problems.

How is cirular breathing possible if your diaphram can only
contract and expand one way at a time?

kenny g blew a constant note for over 40 minutes, setting a
world record.

circular breathing is the trick for sweet sax players and
shit, dunno how it works though, never learned it, hence i
no longer play my sax

to those who want to circular breath,

circular breathing is not a special use of the lungs, it's
in the mouth and throat. when you are about to run out of
breath you block the air passage at the back of your mouth
(like you do when making a hard 'g' sound) and squeeze your
cheeks inward, pushing air out of your mouth like a bellows.
meanwhile you can inhale through you nose.it's a bit like
learning to use a manual transmission. at first it seems
alien and like you may never be coordinated enough to pull
it off. i practiced for a while with the staw and water
tecxhnique and i tried balloons, but i gave up quickly and
just focused on developing vocal manipulations and just
paused between breaths. at some point fairly soon after
giving up i found myself almost circular breathing without
knowing it and when this happened i then put in some effort
and got it. just practice making the sound as nice as you
can, and do a little bit of the straw/water tech on the side
and it will come to you.

I used to play the trumpet. But I think when I pick it up I
can still play something (not much I guess).
Because my lower teeth are kinda looking like a mess it
really hurted my mouth and I had to quit regrettably.

But I do like the sound of the instrument.

my lower teeth are also a mess, but it doesn't hurt.

and the sound, well, I'm not Miles (yet) but sounds nice. I
suppose my neightbours won't think the same.

where did u do ur practice?

You can buy mutes that have a headphone jack. You just pop
it in your trumpet hook up you headphones and there you go.
Quiet practice. Don't know anything about Trumpet Tabs.
Probably not a large call for them. Best practice is to join
a band. Jazz bands are good as you get to practice the whole
range of your instrument.

no Jazz band will let me in...

I heard about that mute stuff, is it nice? sounds ok? feels
the same?

and why no tabs? I need to know wich pistons I have to
press!

At home, but now I'm living in an appartment building.
Not that that is a problem.
I also have my music loud until like 11PM. My lower
neighbour is never at home, so no irritation.

Do they make an eletronic trumpet? Emptying the spit valve
would be risking electrocusion right?

A trumpet would also make a great bong...
You just have to suck instead of blow.
Fill the horn-part with weeds etc...

Yeah, the mouthpiece does make a great bowl. Has anyone
tried this besides me?
