There's Coil fans here, I know. I can smell you.
So tell me what your favorite songs/albums are. Horserotorvator is too damn good, I'm trying to work but this album won't let me. Who By Fire, Blood From the Air, Anal Staircase, Slur, Ostia... fucking love it. I don't know why, but Coil makes me think of NIN, only 54 times better.
What's the connection between Coil and Nurse With Wound, I've never heard anything by NWWound, and looking at Allmusic.com just got me confused.

You're embarking on a long, scary musical trip. There are various connections between Coil, Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Skinny Puppy, the Legendary Pink Dots, Tear Garden, Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle, et. al.
I can't remember most of it.

Oh yeah, I know... I've been listening to lots of the Dots and Ka-Spel and heard Current 93 for the first time recently. This should be quite the Odyssey.

Ophecks Ophecks Ophecks... you talking my language here:) If you like Horserotorvator..I would explore more of the earlier stuff...the later stuff..is a bit too quiet and static...for my tastes...
Scatology Unnatural History..Parts 1,2 and 3 is what I would go for...

John Balance appears on a few Nurse With Wound releases, there's your connection. Fans of Coil tend to also like Current 93, The Legendary Pink Dots and Nurse With Wound. Their homepages are all hosted by www.brainwashed.com also.
Steven Stapleton of NWW produced one of LPD's cds Malachai (aka Shadow Weaver 2)
As far as Coil's best, I don't know. The easiest to swallow would probably be Love's Secret Domain. I would recommend that to someone as an starting point. But really, all of their music is very interesting and worth a listen. I was obsessed with them a while back.

I don't know about 54 times, but Coil is definitely a few steps up over NIN on the musical evolutionary ladder, that's for sure. Some of the best tracks ever to be released on NIN cds were remixes by Coil.

Actually I was into Scatology before Horserotorvator, they're both great albums. I like the earlier Coil better, like Flea said. A little more ''insane''...

As much as I like their earlier work I don't think it's anywhere near as powerful as their recent output. If it's insane your looking for, try getting 'Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil'. The press release says it all :
"This new album by Coil deals with the threat of lavishness and
responds with noise. It's trial by musick. This intense density of
energetic anger explores areas that Coil have threatened to open out into in the past, but rarely have pursued with such hallucinatory ferocity. 6 new pieces still fresh with blood and electronics. Points of reference? Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Can, LaMonte Young, Flipper, Butthole Surfers, Supermarket Sweep. Composed & arranged by John Balance, Peter Christopherson & Thighpaulsandra."

nin. coil. incomparable. come on ladies.
my fave coil stuff is the 2 volumes of musick to play in the dark plus time machines and the equinox and solstace ep's. i think that stuff is amazing. however i like all their eras and i agree that love's secret domain (get it? "LSD"? clever huh.) is the best place to start.
also, yea, coil can always be counted on for great nin remixes. they're very consistent. i can't think of many bad nin remixes though cos trent is so selective of what he puts out.

love coil!! i wouldn't say it is 54*better than nin but i'm starting to prefer coil to nin as well... (nin has been my favorite band for a long time though :))
scatology and horse rotorvator are unequal (some tracks are filler...) but great. 'the anal staircase' is a song which remains stuck in my head for weeks, maybe months now...!
(if anyone wants to know coil and doesn't know them yet, these may be the best albums to start with imo... maybe more 'classic' than their later stuff. or musick to play in the dark v1.)
love's secret domain is very good too, but gives you a wrong idea of coil if you only know this.
the musicks to play in the dark are good, but i definitely prefer v1 to v2. v1 is all good and very good, not really 'dark' but dreamy and inventive, v2 is more minimalistic and a little bit cheesy _ sounds a bit poor quality for half of the album. and there is less inspiration than on v1, too _ tracks 2 and 3 of v2 sound like improved versions of tracks 2 and 3 of v1 ' _ '
moon's milk (in four phases) is probably my fav release by them, it's the collection of the 4 solstices/equinoxes eps... every season has its own "personality", and not the one you could think of by the clichés... i won't describe the feeling of every season, it'd be too hard to describe spring and winter _ autumn contain some of the finest and most beautiful coil songs ever ('rosa decidua' and 'amethyst deceivers'), has which has become my fav intro ever ('regel'... which tastes a bit like 'a taste of' merzbow, but better and easier too :))... and 'the auto-asphyxiating heirophant' is a great track too, dark and suffocating.
some dark coil tracks may sound kitsch, but not this one. it is suffocating.
i have 'how to destroy angels' too, which is nice, and 'the remote viewer'.
i highly recommend 'the remote viewer'. if i had to compare it, i'd say it's a bit like 'f#a#infinity' by godspeed you black emperor!, but better.
you'll have to get it in mp3 though _ it was only pressed

and i've read the one for love's secret domain is, too.

both have worked with Current 93 on many occasions, this band has had a lot of members(David Tibet, Bjork(!), Nick Cave, Boyd Rice, Douglas Pierce, Rose McDowall, Hilmar Orn Hilmarson, Tony Wakeford, Little Annie, Lustmord, Steve Ignorant, Steven Stapleton, Kohn Balance, etc...)
