I got the idea from one of the other topics, so what was
your musical journey?

Mine:

Since I was a very little kid, I used to listen to the
record collection of classical and jazz music that my father
had.
Unfortunately he often traveled for work so his influence
was kinda of sporadic.

When I was 5 I started to like Michael Jackson after
listening Bad.

When I was aproaching 8 - 9 I got into Nirvana.
At ten a friend of mine hooked me into Queen, metallica,
Iron Maiden adn gun's and roses. I listened to that for one
year.

When I was 13 I got into electronica, I started to listen to
Prodigy, underworld, Daft Punk, Fluke. I also started to
listen some trance.

In 8th grade I had a very good music teacher and there I
picked up a passion for classical and avant garde that I'm
still cultivating. In that Year I also started to listen to
Goa trance.

In 9th grade I left electronica and I started to listen to
metal, especially power and Black.

In 10th I went back for a few months to Goa trance, than I
got Into DNB and nu jazz.
And then finally I listened on a webradio Aphex Twin - Come
to daddy, and I started listening to IDM, which I'm still
listening right now.

Also at the beginning of this year I started to be into
indie pop.

As a kid- Listening to my pops rock and roll albums : Paul
Simon, Bruce Springstein.....lots of classic rock too,
Rolling Stones, etc....

Middle school, I kinda found the Smashing Pumpkins, and was
very into teh Alternative scene. wasn't a stoner/swinger,
or anything like that, just a depressed teenager :)

From the pumpkins I got into the rest of the alt scene:
silverchair, local h, green day, weezer have stuck with me

high school: heard Aphex prolly as a freshman or sophomore
RDJ album, and never gave it much thought, met a good friend
Junior year who kinda liked Aphex.

College: live with said friend, we dig all that stuff. Know
lots of kids in rock bands, so I have started to explore the
indie rock/punk scene much more.

Finally bought idm albums a few weeks: Aphex/BOC/Ae.

I'm firmly into braindance, but just love quality rock as
well.

I started young. Listening to my dad's hendrix and queen
records.

Got a little older and stupid and starting listen to the rap
like vanilla ice. (please don't laugh)

From there the grunge scene came out and I started listen to
the Sub Pop bands.

Then moved onto listening only to small Canadian Indie Rock
Bands

Around grade 11 I got into the electronic stuff after
hearing the Chemical Brothers.

From there I got into stuff like underworld and then onto
darker stuff like Tricky and Dj Shadow.

Now I like a lot of stuff from jazz to IDM to underground
hip hop. Mostly right now I'm listening to Real Punk,
Digital Hardcore and IDM.

as a kid, i almost didn't listen to anything... my parents
were (and still are) into classical music and opera (except
some french singers), which i don't hate but doesn't do much
for me...

first music i remember having liked and first cd i received
was 'i took up the runes' by jan garbarek, a jazz cd... i
still listen to it sometimes, it's nice :)

then my father, who likes peter gabriel, bought the 'eve'
cd-rom, which got me into peter gabriel and led me to buy my
first cd ('secret world live')... 2nd cd i bought was
'synkronized' by jamiroquai. (:

...some years after, i discovered oasis, which i liked very
much ('the masterplan' was the first album which i
really found amazing... even if it's unequal by
moments, 'underneath the sky' remains one of my fav. songs
ever :))

then... a friend of mine led me into nu-metal... i'm quite
ashamed of it now (except for some korn which i still listen
to now and then)... but by trying to expand, i discovered
NIN _ and then from NIN i discovered marilyn manson, aphex
twin, 12 rounds, telefon tel aviv, and later coil, thanks to
digitalnoise... :)

then, by searching for aphex twin, i found this board, and
discovered autechre, squarepusher, etc...

now i'm still trying to expand from these starting points,
got into einstürzende neubauten, amon tobin... and from
some other sources, godspeed you black emperor!, frank
zappa, the young gods...

was with fluke, thanks to wipeout64... 'risotto' by fluke
was the first electronica album i bought.

Hmm....very vague musical past, I have. As a kid I liked a
lot of dancey pop kind of stuff, but I still showed signs of
eclectism: 50's music all the way to classical.

Moving forward to around 10 a bit I developed a fond
interested for techno. The first fan of any kind of artist
was Fatboy Slim (look at how young I am!). Still, of course
mainstream, but big beat manifested my love for a good
drumloop. Repeated over and over. Hell yeah!

Year or so later and for some reason, I became interested
in, of all bands, Beastie Boys. Intergalactic was one of my
favourite songs of the past years in the mainstream (still
is) and since I thoroughly enjoyed the then new single
Alive, I decided to get the Sounds of Science Anthology.
(Shit, bit of a crazy story huh?). After listening to the
compilation way too much it broadened my mind entirely to
knew music. It rekindled my early loved for rap and hip-hip
that was started by my brother, helped me understand rock a
little better and to go a lot easier on cheesey
instrumentals like Song for the Man (anyone else know
that).

So I decide to buy Licensed to Ill, as I'm now completely
interested in their music output.

So skip a short while and one day, being interested in music
video and all, I was watching this program on VH1 where they
were nominating the final five for the music awards. One of
them was Aphex Twin, Windowlicker. I watched completely
taken by this new level of fucked-upness and decided it best
to take it a bit further. By this time I have a PC thank
God, and download lots and lots of Aphex, as well
researching deeply into the genre. Not soon after I discover
my brothers ancient interest in the house of Aphex.
Apparently in the mid 90's e would go to a friends house to
play link-up Doom on a PS whilst listening to SAW2. He
rebuys it the same year I discover Aphex and my mind is once
again broadened. Skip a few years and I'm here, except now I
will listen to absolutely anything. Music is my religion. So
lets get down.

P.S. My longest post EVER.

my dad listened to a lot of REM in the car on our driving
holidays in france. Some 'everything but the girl too' which
subconciously got me into electronica.

got into indie around 1996 like supergrass, gene, oasis and
masun etc...

Then in 97 i got a computer game with a warp soundtrack,
loved it, then got a DJ shadow album, squarepusher and an
aphex one and was instantly converted.
Horray!

started liking music at like 3 or something, parents
listened to "hippy" bands like The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull,
King Crimson, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Beatles, some of
which i heard on LSD, at 3 yrs old yep, it was crazy times,
awesome music which i still listen to today. At around 8 i
started liking rap music, this was in '84 or so when rap and
hip-hop were new. After that at around 12 yrs started to
like Poison, Def Leppard, Guns N Roses. Then at around 15
got into Grunge and Alt rock when it was born, bands like
Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Mudhoney, Screaming
Trees. Then when i was 17 i got into reggae bigtime,
listened to Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Big Youth, many others.
After that it was really i wide variety. the first
electronic album i got into was Deee-Lite's Dewdrops in the
Garden in '95. I first heard Autechre on Mtv's show Amp
around '96. Then in Jan. 2002 i really fell in love with
IDM, and that's what i've been listening to ever since,
mostly Ae and BoC.

(intrumental) i was like "OH SNAP" then i got into the
chemical brothers, then tranceish stuff, then drum n bass,
then jungle, then gabber, then i got into aphex, and lately
i've been listening to a lot of vsnares and ae/gescom.

I didn't really give a shit about music until grade 8 or
something.

8th- Green Day
9th- Metallica
10th- Black Sabbath
11th- Led Zeppelin, The Who
12th- The Beatles, Aphex Twin

These are my favorite, mega-important bands in order... as
for college, nothing really stands out like the above
bands... I still listen to all of them constantly, except
Green Day (and I don't mind them).

all other grunge bands (melvins are my second fav), in the
midtime RATM, + i was into massive attack and when they
released mezzanine in 1998 i focused on electronic music
(tricky, portishead+all other chill out musicians) then i
became obssesed with susumu yokotas music and then i
totally focused on rdj (they i joined this mb) and since
then im totally into electronic music+i still listen to all
other genres from serge gainsbourg to marc ribot, tom waits,
nirvana, rhcp, 60's, 70's music. But my main focus is on

hey iroel, same here w/ wipeout XL; that was pretty much the
turning point for me..

& a few months prior i lived in south NJ, where i was
listenin to (c)rap just to fit in.

at age 7 was when i found my 1st artist i liked: Mozart.

this is in reverse sequence, but, yeah...

soon after i got into the WXL soundtrac (while also
listening to NIN) i stumbled upon the "come to daddy" video
by Aphex Twin on MTV when i was almost 13. that pretty much
lodged me into IDM since. i got into Squarepusher a couple
years afterwards.

i was listenin to some Autechre as well, but i never was
greatly intrigued by them until i purchased Chiastic Slide
right after moving up here in AK from IL in the summer of
2000. i was 15.

from there i was strictly into Autechre up until a few
months ago, & now i'm more open to a wider variety of
artists that perform in the IDM & underground hiphop
sectors, but i like some jazz as well. Autechre are still on
the top of my fav. artists list, but Dr. Octagon has made an
entry as well.

there is more yet to discover on this musical journey of
mine...

i've been getting into obscure jazz, funk, folk, soul, avant
garde, experimental, and britrock songs all 2002 that people
have either sampled or cited as inspirations. i've also been
listening to lots of hip-hop that combines socially
conscious lyrics with experimental and creative flows. in
addition i've been listening to more rock(-ish) stuff than i
have in recent years and as much idm as previous years, but
more diverse (less warp stuff). i still listen to bits of
everything i've ever been into. i think it's pretentious to
just stop listening to stuff just cos you realize it's not
the most inventive, intelligent, or trendy (ie: underground
trendy) thing in the world. if it brings you pleasure keep
listening!

As a child -
Mostly classical. My parents are big only classical music
and opera so I listened to a lot of that. I used to have
loads of "Anne Racklin" tapes. They were basically a series
of tapes for children in which the stories behind the
various pieces of classical music were told with the music
in the background, sometimes coming into the foreground.
When I got my first Hi-Fi I taped the occassional track off
the top-50 but I mostly stuck with classical.

Middle School -
Bought my first CDs which were mostly Queen, Dire
Straights and Tschaikowsky. I didn't really develop very
much during this period. Most of my friends were into Gun's
and Roses which I loathed so I kinda isolated myself
musically. However this is when I first discovered jazz. My
folks have a rather good set of vinyls (handed down and
inherited). Mostly sung stuff like Ella Fitzgerald, Fat's
Waller, Nat King Cole etc.. Also more classical like Dvorak
and Narciso Yepes playing Rodrigo. Oh yeah and early
santana.

High School -
My introduction to electronic music. Basically I heard a
mate playing Orbital - Satan and it blew me away. This guy
also introduced me to the likes of photek, fluke and fsol
(Thanks Jon if your lurking in here somewhere). Also at this
point in my brother's music path he focused on jazz. I
learnt a lot about various jazz artists like Courtney Pine,
Michel Petrucciani (rip), pat metheny, Grappelli etc.. Oh
and my grandmother introduced me to Reich who I adore.
Oh yeah and there was the depressed year when I only
listened to Metallica!

-Uni until present day
This was when I stop being anal! I started to listen to
all those bands that were trendy when I was in high school
such as Radiohead, Bjork, Ben Harper, Jamiroquai,
Nirvana,Placebo etc.. Also during this time I discovered the
afx msg board and artists like mu-ziq, afx, telefon tel
aviv, autechre, underworld, the ozrics, the orb and so on.
Also loads of jazz from my bro and the most recent discovery
has to be coldplay, I just bought both al

Im like Ophecks I guess...i didn't really take in music like
i do now. i was a radio junkie and listened to whatever
came on. if anyone lives in vancouver here i was big into
Z95.3 FM that was like in grade 5-7. I guess i had some
music in me cause with radio on or not i would tape the
backside of a tamborine we had (it was like a stretched fake
animal hide..nice sound). i only had one drum stick so my
right arm is better at drumming / double tapping than my
left.

anyways, after elementary, i got onto radio dance shows that
were broadcasted live from a dance club here in Van called
The Rage...it was on every saturday and id get all comphy
and enjoy the dance (some of which was really really good).
another show came on Friday that would prove to be thing
that got me into electronica as i know it!

late one night a track came on and it was called Block
rockin' beats by the Chemical Brothers. I heard what cd it
was on and i either begged my mom or used my money to get
it...i forget. anyway. through that radioshow i heard lots
of great acts. my second cd that i got was Daft Punk's
Homework...got that after hearing the delicious Around the
world lol.

Time went on and noticed that his last hour started to be
more for 'the hardcore' as he said...dj was Chris
Sheppard...some here may know him. And i really started to
enjoy it. it was a 4 hour show and id always finally get to
bed at 3 in the morn...great stuff. but yeah. thats where
it all started. then i got on to ae.nu and heard MORE acts
and started getting in the avant garde a whole lot
more...then i got here in afx.nu...hearing MORE stuff. so
id like to thank you all for your help...its helped me lots
and helped me find what i like.
