Yeah, that track stood out the first time I heard it, one of

a bit of detail from Alex Torrance, the guy who did the
Artwork...

"i did the packaging for ( ) and 'directed' kleber on the
site. it's based quite loosely on a promo cd-rom i made for
the album. but i've let them get on with it mostly as
they're a lot better than me.

as for the artwork, yes the image is pixelated. the band
gave me 10 photos they had taken with their digital cameras.
i think they were about 640x480, 72dpi. very lo-res. the
band had also manipulated the images in PS. just made them
greyscale and adjusted the contrast a bit.

they had already decided they wanted the slip case with die
cut brackets in it and wanted the booklet to be blank,
except from the front, on which they wanted their images
(one for each territory). they had also decided on the
stock: tracing paper.

they wanted the images to be vignetted, but to look natural.
after a few attempts in photoshop with vectors and
feathering i decided it would be better to mask the images
using painted materials. we ended up using plants from
outside the studio to paint textures onto paper.

i took these paintings, scanned them into the mac, and
started to work away. this is what the imagery is all taken
from. i actually quite like the pixelated images as they
contrast very highly with the paint layers, which are full
of texture and very high res. this is best displayed inside
the booklet (although the silver print may be a little to
faint to see) and the ipk backdrops.

as for the booklet being blank. it isn't. it has images in
it. just no words. so what's the problem?" ...

"El Captain, have you actually seen the artwork? Or just
heard rumours? "Pretention without Justification" surely is
not as bad as "Criticism without Knowledge", otherwise known
as Ignorance.

Firstly the booklet isn't 100% blank. At first this is what
the band wanted, although we decided to add some images,
very faintly, in silver. The band's reasoning for having the
booklet blank ties in with the fact that there are no
"lyrics". Vocals, but not lyrics. The booklet is blank to
allow people who have bought the album to write their own
thoughts, lyrics, sketches and doodles as they listen.
Surely you've been idly sitting at your desk with a pen and
pad in front of you and got lost in the music you were
listening to at the time and ended up with a page, or more,
of words, pictures, etc. What's wrong with taking this
further.

The album has no title as the band never thought about
titling it as they were making it, and didn't want to give
it a title just for the sake of it. I'm not sure how they
came about the 'bracket' shape, and ( ) is just the easiest
typographic way of representing this.

There are no titles so people can feel free to interperate
the songs in their own way. Also it's because there are no
lyrics. The songs had working titles, and as they have been
playing these songs live for 2 years now, many fans know
these titles too. And these are what the MP3s you have are
titled as.

I can understand that people have different tastes, and I'm
not berating you for that, I am merely putting forward the
"justification" for your perceived "pretension".

If you want to know more, then you could visit
www.sigur-ros.co.uk/ to read interviews with the band. But as
you've already made up your mind I wouldn't expect you
to."...

These are posts from a design board we're both memebers of,
just in case you were wondering who he's directing these
at....

of drawing on a CD cover....(it is just a bit wack...the

The fourth track was referred to by them as 'Njósnavélin'
when played live... I think. Personally, I don't think you
need any sort of reference point when listening to Sigur
Ros. The music is so pure and honest as it is, anything
else would only serve as a distraction.

Ack, am I the only person in the world disappointed by this
album?

So far I've just found it boring, and the constant repeating
of the same lyric across multiple tracks is really tedious.

People new to Sigur Ros, please listen to their Agaetis
Byrjun album - it's brilliant - but give ( ) a miss!

blah, don't listen to danbrusca... get both albums... :)

seriously, I liked Agaetis Byrjun, but found the singing way
too whinny for a lot of it... this album seems a lot better
in this area, and I dunno, it's already hit me as a better
album of the two...

yeah.. i downloaded an early live version of track 4 a few
weeks before the album came out

i must say, that version was better than the album version..
the mp3 quality was horrible..you could tell the person put
it through a heavy noise reduction filter.. but the
murkiness went a long nicely with the song

i listened to it constantly until the album came out..so
gorgeous.. its one of those songs that can be either really
sad, or uplifting, depending on your mood.. the version i
had was a bit more melancholy i think it.. the singing was
different... it choked me up a lot

im still kicking myself for missing their concert last
week... well.. wasnt really my fault.. just my po' ass
friends who couldnt afford tickets

such a wonderful album, just perfect in every aspect.

for those who are curious, i found the working titles of the
songs from different reviews:

1 vaka
2 fyrsta
3 samskeyti
4 njosnavelin (the nothing song)
5 alafoss
6 e-bow
7 (the death song)
8 popplagio (the pop song)

i recommend 1, 2, and 8. oh good lord, i love 8.
DEFINATELY worth checking out.

My favourite tracks aren't on either album as it happens.

First off there's Von, which I would like playing at my
funeral, though I have no idea where it comes from.

Secondly, Death Announcements & Funerals from Hilmar Orn
Hilmarsson's Angels Of The Universe soundtrack is a
beautiful piece of music.

stunning... I only bought this yesterday but already it's
like a religious experience for me... I feel so uplifted and
ready to face whatever challenges are ahead of me after
listening to this... yet it's so bittersweet I want to cry
when I listen... this tops anything released this year that
I've heard, easily!!!

i only said that cos people make a big deal about how
different sigur ros are.. and they're pretty different for
now, but they're not that dissimilar from the shoegazer
stuff of the early to mid 90s.. anyway, i don't really mind
that it's nothing new, it's just that sigur ros are overly
FORMULAIC.. you can pretty much predict how all of their
songs are gonna go. plus, as i so eloquently put, i don't
like the singer's voice much, especially in this song.

i think 'death announcements' is listed in icelandic on ny

they're both great regardless
