How many people here have been professionally trained on
any instruments? By professionally, i really just mean
lessons or learning them in school? Some of the music you
guys have made is really awesome, and would be hard to do
without a little musical background.

I play the trumpet it my school band(s), and havebeen taking
piano lessons for a few years.

i forgot to mention learning the recorder numerous times in
school, and i've a drumset, but can't do much more than a
simple rock beat.

i played the drum set for 4 years starting in 6th grade.
(both in school and private lessons) i then sold them to buy
equipment for making electronic music. i taught myself to
write and use the equipment for about 3 years, and then i
finally took some theory classes. the year before i took
theory classes, i began playing the electric bass, teaching
myself how to read music and play. Then, the same year that
i started taking theory lessons, i also took bass lessons.
(I played the bass in my highschoo band both years... even
when i first started). I also took a class on guitar for a
year, but i didnt like it, so i dont play anymore. I then
applied to Berklee College of Music, where I am now...
studying Synthesis, Film Scoring, and possibly Composition,
if I can squeeze it in (film scoring has alot of classes in
common with composition, so i might take all the non
required composition classes as electives). I play bass as
my principle intrument (we have to play an instrument while
we are here, and have lessons) but i am enjoying it less and
less. I just like to write music.

It will be required of me to learn piano (i think starting
next semester...) ill take 2 classes of that. Its also
required for me to take 4 classes of voice lessons, which im
on my 3rd year.

So yeah. I do wish i played the piano, and had learned it
at a young age... its a useful tool for writting... but im
still young... i got my whole life to learn :)

*not 3rd year... 3rd semester.... take voice lessons for the
first 4 semesters.

well, I have 5 years of modern dance, and 4 years of tap...

seriously though, I was in piano lessons for maybe 7 or 8
years, and took trombone lessons in school for maybe 5 or
so...

I took guitar lessons for a few years until recently...
can't afford it now. I was a horrible student, theory
wise... I never got the hang of reading the notes... but I'm
good at playing, and with tab I do just fine.

i'm "professionally trained" in trumpet (5 or 6 years) and
guitar, but ironically i'm probably best at keyboard which i
taught myself.

well, i'm shit at piano, and i've been going for 5 or 6
years at least. i cannot stand my teacher, tho, so that
could have something to do with it :-P
i've taught myself more trumpet than my band teacher ever
could, too.

I studied trumpet for 3 years prior to high school. I took
formal lessons outside of school, but failed to develop as
an expert trumpet player. I kinda lost interest. The
years of playing in concert band were not much fun, so I
eventually gave up on it.

took gee tar lessons for awhile, but then i decided that the
genral musical rules for guitar were shit, so I stopped
taking them to go off and explore my own ways with the 6
strings, but then i bought a synthesizer...

I've had about 9 years violin study, taking lessons on and
off, and 3 years of oboe lessons. (Oboe! Yay! Who likes
oboe?)

Sang in a (well, several) choir for about 8 years. I was
also trained in the Violin for 2 years. Self taught acoustic
guitar (really bad) & harmonica (can't play tunes-use
it a vocoder type device...) learning piano/keyboard (used
to play self taught bontempi organ!) with help from gf & her
mum (her mum is a really good pianist).

Piano since I was 10.
Trumpet since I was 13.
Guitar since I was about 17.
Decks (I'm counting them too!) 17/18.
Used to sing in a choir for four years and played the
recorder at lower school. Started the Violin but thought it
was crap. No offence to Violin players.

trumpet for about a week but I sucked =op

The Violin's a git, you have to be really good to get
a good sound out of it. I'd say it's a lot easier to become
"good" at the piano than a violin...

Yes, I did recorder too and I suppose In total I've clocked
up a few score hours on decks as well (want my own now!)

Get the decks! Scorn all other purchases and get them. You
won't regret it I promise you! They're the best fun. DO
IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!
DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! DO

Saving like a swine for them- very little alcohol/going
out/video games/bought meals etc. I keep buying vinyl
though- I've got 50 records now, so I'm not buying anymore
apart from hi-scores & twoism till I get decks. It's really
tempting just to say, "Sod it" and buy them, but I really
don't need more money worries :)

I've been taking piano lessons for 14 years.
I'm hopefully going to be studying music from september, if
all goes according to plan.

To compound the dilema, I'm also getting reasonable at
Traktor so I find it harde rto justify to myself. Still, I
have set my sights on them and one day the PDX-2000s will be
mine! Plus there's a load of other music related stuff like
and oxygen midi keyboard & a stable powerful laptop that I
know will be vying for purchasing once the neccesary moola
is saved up :o)

Patrik: Good luck, where are you studying?

But I will get decks, I mean it's pathetic how much I want
them really. I was practicing crabs with my spaar hand
driving to work..

of the incredible string band (One of BoC's main

softsynth...
