hello.
I have been working all night on reinstalling XP as it imploded in the middle of the day.
yes, reinstalling, which meant formatting my harddrive. I was very angry. all data on my laptop is lost.
luckily I had recently made a back-up, so I have all my music, but most of my writing is gone.
FUCKKKKKK!

why reformat?...that sound drastic...
XP is great in my experience and I run several heavy-weight NT/XP servers with no problems whatsoever...

somehow a 'hive' -file got corrupt, or was lost.. windows wouldn't run, whatever I tried. so I phoned the helpdesk at Dell and that person said "shit, thats bad, you need to reinstall XP" and there is no way to reinstall XP without formatting.
I thought it was drastic too.. :(

What the fuck causes OS things to crash? Fucker happened to me a while back. Methinks I'm going to back this shit up next week, I'm getting paranoid.
Everytime I boot my cpu up, I'm afraid it won't get past the boot... I'm nervous as hell with this thing. I always expect the worst when it freezes or I see a blue screen. I can't live with this tension.

my Windows 2000 professional OS, has YET to crash on me... the reason I only "thought" it did, was because my sound card did not have the proper drivers & so... winamp wouldn't play anything, or rather, there would be no sound, whatsoever.

And that's only happened twice in over a year....bad crash tho, it reset the machine which if you know how stable XP is, is a very hard thing to do...

Utter rubbish. You just got taken for a ride. Basically they wanted to get you off the phone as quickly as possible because every support call costs them money.
Your registry (hive shmive) was toast (or part of it was) but I guarantee the filesystem was not damaged at all. You could have put that drive as a slave into another XP/Win2K system and accessed the data just fine.
Also, large companies like Dell often don't give you a real operating system CD, just a restore CD that, as you learned, wipes out everything before reinstalling.
It's easier that way, and studies indicate people are happy to bend over and let themselves be sodomized.
Next time something like that happens, take your PC to a mom and pop shop and have a real tech copy your data out onto a CD or another hard drive--IF your data is worth the effort.

once you get rid of all that Fisher Price interface lark, it's not that cheesy...
but that style does seem to be popular with newbie computer users for some reason...
and yeah, I love XP as well...bought an Epson printer the other day and instantly upon connecting the USB cable, XP went off to the internet, downlaoded the drivers, installed me without me having to do a thing...very smooth indeed...
same goes for when my cable modem was installed...it just worked...
what more can you ask of an OS?...

Surely borrow a bootable drive from someone else, set that as the master an your old drive as slave then copy all your old files to the new one, re-format the old one then move the files back?
Jand: re XP: Yep, I used to think it wasn't a "serious" OS because of the kiddy interface, but like you say 99% of new hardware works first time. Great when setting up a new machine to not have to mess around with drivers etc. there are also lots of little improvements that you only notice when going back to 98 and they aren't there.
Damn, just spotted fleetmouse said the same thing as me :)

Ya know qrter, it occurs to me that even if you have separate document partitions, that goddamned Dell recovery CD you have is probably going to blow them away and create one big partition and reformat it again next time this shit happens.... I would be surprised if it didn't.
Did the tech have you fdisk and format it yourself or did you just boot with the disk in the C drive and click one or two buttons for the whole shebang?

Windows NT and 2000, and I am quite sure it also accounts for XP, have a repair function on the install CD. If you could get a proper install CD maybe repairing the installation would have helped.
Qrter, do you have a 'regular' pc in addition to your lappie?
If both have network interfaces, you could link them with a crosscable and backup to the other PC.
I know this is 'mosterd na de maaltijd'* but maybe its handy to prevent another disaster like this.
