I'd be surprised if those guys over at Pitchfork ever liked
anything.

Not a big Godspeed fan myself though.

I don't know why I look there for reviews so much. They are
a bunch of xenophobic dicks! Still, it was their Radiohead
reviews that helped convince me to get some of their stuff.
Check out Kid A review by the way.

I don't see that at all. There are lots of 9+/10 records
reviewed on their site. In fact, all of the other GYBE!
records.

hes just mad that theres no samples and that its different.
hes saying that it has no meaning if theres no samples.
well I too dont like the the nonuse of samples I still
wouldnt hold that against the album. pitchfork talks so much
shit anyways, I just read their reviews anyways for some
reason.

At least it wasn't one of those narrative reviews where the
writer is writing a letter to a dead poet or talking to his
imaginary friend about a childhood trip to the zoo. Me, I
fuckin hate that.

Lately I get the sense that Pitchfork writers are
desperately searching for the next big thing, and since they
haven't found it they have to roast anything from the recent
past--nothing worse than being seen wearing last year's
t-shirt.

Whatever the next big thing is (minimal Bengali polka-hop?)
I doubt Pitchfork will be the way I find out about it.

pitchfork reviews mean nothing to me but a cheap laugh. 90%
of what their writers say in the reviews is pompous,
conceited, facetious, and most importantly, very misleading.
by saying this album is bad because it lacks samples of
strangers is to show that they miss the point of godspeed's
music if they're just in it for the cute clips of lunatics
and short wave radio chatterboxes. that's like their fucking
hip-hop reviews, grading solely by the eccenticities of the
beats or how it rates on their scale of music to get high
to, god forbid they actually analyze the lyrical content
and delivery that is central to rapping.

pitchfork = poseurs who get lucky sometimes with their
positive reviews.

i agree with you 100% on this one titsworth. if i see an
album that they give a 9 or 10 and an album they give a 5
its really means no difference to me because what they give
a 5 could be a 10 and what they give a 10, id give a 5.
example #1: Wilco - yhf, id give it like a 6 or 6.5, its
nothing special at all, kamera is the worst track ever. the
only reason they gave a damn about yhf was because it was in
a label struggle. it didnt even change labels! it just
switched from one label to another under the same owner.
nonesuch is not independent at all its owned by a f ucking
l.

my advice to people who DO read pitchfork reviews: ignore
the # they rate the cd and pay attention to the review
itself. look at how they describe the cd. are they being
facetious? i read a review of blackalicious' "nia" where the
reviewer took the guise of some angry grandmother. pitchfork
throw a ton of curveballs because they're way up their own
asses ("arses"). just pay attention to how they are
reviewing the music, if they are at all.

Yeah, Pitchfork reviews are generally quite arbitrary.
That's what is fun about reading them....to see whether Ryan
Schreiber or one of his goons gushes all over some new
release, or rips it apart.

Pitchfork loves:
Swarm & Dither
Playthroughs

Pitchfork hates:
Go Plastic
Do you know Squarepusher

Haha, yeah, I read that Jimmy Eat World review... that was
good stuff.

I don't like it when their reviews get too ''weird''... the
narrative bullshit. But some of them really crack me up, and
I actually agree with their reviews quite often. Although
sometimes I come away wondering what the fuck I just read...
random self concious gibberish and some number pasted
there...

hah ..i figured out what the review was going to be like
before i even read it..

"eh, its ok..but nowhere near as great as (insert past album
by band, and/or other similar band)"
in every review i've read there, the reviewer focuses on
comparing the album to other albums.. even in the rare
positive reviews, the album is never as good as the
'masterpiece' the reviewer has established as a reference
point

and in the rare case when they DON'T establish a direct
comparison, their line of positive thinking is "TRUST US,
loyal pitchfork listener, i would NOT steal you wrong. if
you don't like it you can give me 10 lashings with river
cuomos' glasses," or something stupid like that. they NEVER
really evaluate the music itself, just the image of how cool
or uncool it is.

but what do you (as in: everyone who's heard it) think about
the new GYBE-album? I thought that was what this thread was
going to be about.

Most of the times i disagree completely with pitchfork...
but some of their reviews are written so enthusiasticly that
you actually feel like running out to the store to
immediately buy that cd... which is cool i think :-D The
nice thing about pitchfork is they give their writers ALOT
of freedom.

I think the new GY!BE album is really good, much more akin
to the Wire review than the Pitchfork one. Incidentally the
Pitchfork review is so far off the mark I wonder if they
were listening to the right CD at all.

Some of you may have downloaded a track off the net called
'Tazer Floyd'. This track appears on Yanqui UXO as 'Rocket
Falls On Rocket Falls'. It's been reworked from the live
version that I heard in Bradford and is the standout track
on the album.

Tracks 1&2 - '09-15-00' - got my attention on the first
listen and are excellent, but 4&5 - 'motherfucker=redeemer'
didn't. I suspect they will grow on me though. It's actually
very rare that I really get into an album on the first
listen, so so far it's doing better than can be expected!

Hm... i haven't heard the new one yet myself. I'm still
having doubts whether i'll buy it. Actually (having heard
their first 3 releases) i sort of agree with this bit:

"Or that they just keep doing the same thing over and over
and over and over again, hoping for a different result.
Someone tell Godspeed that orchestras play all kinds of
music and that uprising can take other forms in music than
apexes conveying abandonment, loss or apocalypse."

I completely fell in love with Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada
(which was the first GYBE i heard) when i bought it, and
listened to it an incredible number of times... never ever
getting bored with it.

Then i bought the first album... and still thought it was
great. Sure the songs were a little similar, but they were
all great songs, and enjoyed the album lots.

When Skinny Fists was released... i bought it immediately...
but felt slightly dissapointed. Sure the songs were great
(again, as usual)... but i really got the feeling that i'd
heard it all before :-/ GYBE don't seem to be making alot of
progress. And i kinda feel buying this new release would be
like buying the same cd for the fourth time. Sure they are a
unique amazing and talented band... but they should move on
already, try something new.

But then again, maybe they did :-) I'm hoping this new album
will sound differently from the last 3 albums. I'll listen
to it next time i'm in a decent recordstore for sure... but
this time GYBE will have to convince me the album will
really be worth it.

They do make Playthroughs sound pretty compelling. I'm eager
to check it out. Surely it can't be as mediocre as that
Trail of Dead they raved about. But I tell ya that was the
last time I'm buying something unheard on PF's say-so.

fleetmouse: they suckered me into checking out trail of dead
(hated it; if i wanted to listen to something that sounded
like sonic youth in their 80s heyday i'd listen to my
fucking sonic youth albums); shalabi effect (yaaaaawn, the
only gybe! related cd i haven't liked); and most recently,
playthrough (fucking pointless). fortunately i didn't buy
any of those. 3 strikes and they're out though; i'm not
going to check out any of their "trust us, it's so good!"
albums anymore cos all they care about is how cool it'll
appear to trendy fuckfaces, not how interesting or good the
music actually is.

Ugh, Shalabi Effect. I bought Sam Shalabi and the
Kristian/Shalabi/St. Onge CDs too, all boring as hell.

I would really recommend Yanqui UXO to Surrounded. To me it
seems a much more tightly focused and directed album,
particularly in comparison to Skinny Fists. Of course it's
unmistakably GY!BE, but they've cut down on a lot of the
meaningless musical meanderings (!) of the past.

Another thing to note is that these tracks aren't beautiful
epics. To me they're quite brutal ones, the tone being much
darker and harsher than in the past. There's certainly
plenty here to distinguish the album from it's predecessors.

i have no idea what they were thinking, i mean they give
relationship of command a 6.5 and trail of dead a 10?!
clearly atdi's album is waaaaay better. the wilco album is
also nowhere near a 10. i dont even need to think about
buying the enw gybe because I know itll be good. they only
release quality music.

...relationship of command...

Now that is one great rockalbum! I'm so sad they decided to
split up :-(
(saw Sparta live in concert a while back and they were
horrible... not even close to atdi).

There was a time when that cd (ROC) never left my cd-player
for a couple of weeks straight... it's just awesome! Totally
crawls under your skin, and has a drive and so much
energy... unlike any other band i know.

I forget the songtitles, but i love the song where they keep
screaming: "manuscript replica!"... and also the one with
the kidnap-telephone call as intro... ah... actually i love
them all! Fantastic cd!
