He bought a grand piano that can be played by computer. It's called a 'Diskclavier' and it's made by Yamaha. It's exactly like a straightforward grand piano but the keys can be controlled by a computer via MIDI – the musical instrument digital interface. Richard James cannot read conventional musical notation and he cannot play a keyboard so, in order to make the piano and prepared piano pieces that appear on 'Drukqs' he prepared his Diskclavier according to the principles established by John Cage and programmed the playing using a computer. The results are there for all to hear. It's a real piano on Drukqs, not a sampler or a synthesizer. Richard James has brought the sound of the forties into the 21st century.
NOTE: Richard James cannot read conventional musical notation and he cannot play a keyboard
i didn't know this

Hmmm I think all this "Richard can't read music" is just another aphex gimmick. Are we meant to think oooooooooooooo he's even more of a genius?
It takes 2 days tops to learn to read music, if a little longer to master it.
Personally I think the druqks piano pieces sound slightly inferior to a 5 year old practicing for grade one.

ur wrong i really think is even more a genius than we think for me drukqs is the humming of a dying child, it shows the way society is getting wrong in every directions. and it sounds perfect.
im drawing with my instinct and it looks perfect. :P

Well like I said in another post, if it does it for you then great.
Early aphex including SAWII does it for me. Druqks piano makes me yawn + slightly irritates me.

I have a disclavier. Their great fun. It has built in drum beats. It's a laugh to just set it to jungle and play my way over the top. I can read music but I wouldn't say it was necessary to be able to read it to write it or play it. If you want to be in a band then yes as you need to read what's written but when your doing the music yourself then what's the point?

some of the beatles couldnt read music when they first started - holla holla
drukqs is bad - besides the first and second track on the first disc - good idea, but the only person to ever pull of a double disc that doesnt make me want to sleep is OVUCA
drukqs got me all excited (at first), then i got an advanced copy, listened once, and threw it away
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Ha ha, I'd like to see a 5 year old with the immense handspan required to play bits of Avril 14th :)
Good point about reading the music. In another interview Rich talked about liking Satie, I doubt he copied the style without reading some sheet music of satie...

Who cares whether he can read music or not? I for one don't. Plus the comment about the 5 year olds grade one! WTF?? Have you tried to play one of those pieces. Not easy to work out. I'm working on my Grade 8 piano so I feel I do have a certain amount of knowledge on the subject. I sat down and tried to work out the part and it was exceptionally hard. Took me a long time. Find me a five year old taking their grade one who can play it just like that and I'll quit playing the piano.

Yeah, Avril 14th is a swine. I'm only just learning piano/keyboard, but I can tell it's a hard piece.
